William Barfield

PATRICK – Mr. William Arther Barfield, 82, died Feb. 4. 2008.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Feb 6, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Howard Walters, Homer Hinson, and Ed Griggs officiated with burial in Cedar Creek Cemetery.

The family received friends Feb. 5, 5-6 p.m. at the funeral home.

William was born Sept. 7, 1925, a son of the late John and Nora Clark Barfield. He was a member, deacon, and Secretary of Cedar Creek Baptist Church. He was a life member of Chesterfield Masonic Lodge # 220, a 32nd Degree York Rite Mason, Omar Temple Shriner and a member of the Darlington County Red Fez Club. He was also the Past Patron of the Chesterfield Eastern Star Chapter # 232. Mr. Barfield Redired from Sonoco after 44 years and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club. He was instrumental in bringing rural water to the Plainview Community and was a charter member and treasurer of the Cedar Creek Cemetery Association.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, J.C. Barfield, David Barfield, Kendell Barfield, and Curtis Barfield.

Surviving are his wife, Willie Mae Barfield of Patrick; son, William Boyd “Pete” (CeCelia) Barfield of Chester-field; daughter Alesia Barfield and (Steve) Christman of Liburn, Ga.; grandchildren, Joe Barfield, Dana Barfield, Emily Christman; and a great-grandchild, Danny Barfield.

Irene Lear Hooks

WADESBORO, N.C.Mrs. Irene Lear Hooks, 91, died Feb. 1, 2008.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Feb. 3, at Mt Beulah Baptist Church  with Rev. Donald Wallace officiating. Burial Followed in the church cemetery.

The family will greet friends at the church on Sunday an hour prior to the service.

Irene was born June 18, 1916, a daughter of the late William Alexander Lear and the late Clara Hancock Lear. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt Beulah Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, G. Frank Hooks; a son, Jerry Franklin Hooks; grandchildren, Mitzi Hooks and Jerry Hooks, Jr.; brothers and sisters, Charles “Chuck” Lear, David Lear, Katie Lisenby, Josephine Bryant, Ruth Morris, Margaret Dietrich and Maynette Davidson.

Surviving is her son, Jimmy (Cathy) Hooks of Polkton, N.C.; a daughter, Joan (Ken) Younger of Summerville; grandchildren Nikki Hooks of Newington, Conn., Terri (Rusty) Johnson of Wingate, N.C., Tonja (Randy) Evans of Summerville, Sonja (Bryan) Perkins of Ladson, Kenny (Shannon) Younger of Harleyville; great-grandchildren, Regan and Sustin Johnson, Tarrin and Clayton Evans, Samantha, Charlie and Krysten Perkins; her brothers and sisters, Donald Lear, Ray Lear and Eleanor Gulledge, all of Chesterfield, and Joyce Gilly of Ruby.

Hazle R. Knight

DARLINGTONHazle Richard Knight, 84, died Jan 24, 2008.

Funeral services were held Jan, 27 at Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery with flag presentation by an Honor Guard from Ft. Jackson.

He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Duane Knight

Hazel was born Nov. 29, 1923, a son of the late Jack and Minnie Richardson Knight. He was a veteran of World War II.

Surviving is his wife, Georgiana S. Knight; a daughter, Geraldine (Bobby) Lyles of Cheraw; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dedia Williams of Monroe, N.C. and Martha McQueen of Washington, D.C.; and other relatives and friends.

Margaret Talley Gilcrest

CHERAW – Mrs Margaret Talley Gilcrest, 89, died Jan. 29, 2008

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Feb. 2 at G.W. Long Memorial Presbyterian Church, Cheraw. Burial was held in Foundry Hill Cemetery.

Margaret was born Sept. 29 1918 to the late Solomon and Minnie E. Talley. Her childhood and young adult life were spent in Cheraw, where she attended and graduated Salutatorian from Coulter Memorial Academy. She excelled in academics, winning an oratorical contest and played the forward position on the Coulter High School basketball team, leading her team to three victories in South Carolina State Championships.

She furthered her education by attending Barber Scotia College in North Carolina for a short period, before moving to New York City and attending Brooklyn Community College and the College of Staten Island. She was employed as a teacher’s aid as P.S. 15, giving over 20 years of service to the children of Red Hook Brooklyn.

She loved spending time with her family playing Scrabble, Phase 10 and doing word search puzzles.

A loving and devoted wife and mother, Margaret and the late Oscar J. Gilcrest, Sr. were married May 28, 1948; a union that spanned 58 years at the time of Oscar’s passing on June 6, 2005.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Gilcrest Griffin.

Surviving are seven children, James “Jimmy” A. (Linda) Talley of Riverdale, Ga., Dorothy Gilcrest of Harrellsville, N.C., Oscar Gilcrest, Jr. of Yonkers, N.Y., Margaret (Lucy) Gilcrest of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and Jacqueline (Jackie) L. Gilcrest of Harrellsville, N.C.; grandmother and great-grand-mother of 15, Glenetta and Keynetta, Traveis, Akobi (Lavina), Fanchon, William (Billy), Yasin, Kwame, Ku’trech, Omar, Sade, Anthony, Katherine and James (J.T.); great-grandchildren, Ivy, Jaylen, D’Aunthony, Devon, Ife, Oji, Kiyara, Aaliyah and Isabella; three sisters, Myrtle T. Graham and Lillian T. McCain of Cheraw and Ann Lenox (Thedore of Nashville, Tenn.; and other relatives and friends.

Roy Evans

JEFFERSONMr. Roy Evans, 59, died Jan. 24, 2008.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Feb. 1 at Cross Road Missionary Baptist Church, Kershaw. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

Roy was born Feb 18, 1948, a son of the late John Aaron and Gladys Robinson Evans. He received his formal education in the  public schools of Lancaster County and graduated in 1967 from Hill Side High School in Heath Springs. His working career began at Caro-Knit in Jefferson, where he worked in the shipping department. Seeking new challenges, Roy was employed with Springs Industries and worked at Grace Bleachery a division of Springs in Lancaster for 30 years before leaving to care for his mother, a service he rendered until his death.

A lifelong member of Cross Road Missionary Baptist Church, he was an active parishioner and attended the church until illness of his mother compelled him to curtail his activities. His services to the church included Sunday school teacher for the youth, an usher with the Usher’s Ministry, a trustee, at the time of his death he was a member of the Deacon’s Ministry.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Johnny and Alice McGriff Robinson, Robert and Charlotte Haggins Evens; and a brother, Rudolph Evans.

Surviving are seven sisters, Barbara A. Evens of Pittsburg, Pa., Patricia A. Champion (David), Charlene Evans, Michelle Evans all of Bronx, N.Y., Johnny l. Benson (George) of Paradise, Ariz., Mildred Wright (Curtis) of Jeffer-son, and Linda Funderburk (Ricky) of Lancaster; three brothers, Robert Paul Evans (Lavilla) of Honolulu, HI and Wayne Evans of Charlotte, N.C.; a god-daughter, Chericka M. Funderburk of Lancaster; an aunt, Evelyn Mungo Robinson of Charlotte, N.C. and other relatives and friends.

Ceretha Teal

HOLLANDCeretha Teal, age 91, died Jan. 31, 2008.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Feb. 3, at the First United Methodist Church of Holland.

She graduated from China Grove High School and attended Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. While living in Fairmont, N.C., she was a member of the Fairmont United Methodist Church and was active in the Chancel Choir and the United Methodist Women. In 1965, she moved to Marshville, N.C. where she worked at Forest Hills High School as a secretary. She also attended the Marshville United Methodist Church where she was a Chancel Choir member and active in the United Methodist Women.

Ceretha was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Teal on December 8, 2006.

Surviving are her children, Brenda and Charles Bullard of Holland and Steve and Loria Teal of Myrtle Beach; her grandchildren, Michael Bullard, Stefanie and Mike Duelley, Angie Atan-asov, Cathy and Pete Doyle, Brian Teal, Sharon Bullard, Amanda Rayl, and Justin Rayl; her great-grand-children Ezra Rayl, Madelyn Duelley, Rebecca Duelley and Patrick Doyle; her brother; Ernest (onnie) Trexler of Orlando Fla.; and other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Holland or to Lakeside Vista in Holland.

Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Knight Mills

PAGELAND – Mrs. Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Knight Mills, 80, died Jan 30, 2008.

Funeral services were at 11 a.M. Feb. 2, at Mt Moriah Baptist Church. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

Visitation immediately followed the graveside service in the church fellow-ship hall.

Mrs. Mills was a daughter of the late Edward Clyde and Mary Leonard Knight. She was a graduate of Union High School. Lib was a retired seamstress and poultry farmer along with her husband, the late George Everette Mills. She was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, where she served as WMU leader, former Sunday school teacher, benevolence chair-person, and choir member. Lib was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a friend to all.

She was preceded in death b a sister, Madry Haney.

Surviving are four daughters, Jane (Johnny) Tomberlin of Pageland, Regina (Everette) Cuthbertson of Wingate, N.C., Marsh (Al) Johnson and Donna (Brett) Reese all of Jefferso;, two brothers, Boyd and Don Knight both of Wingate; three sisters, Dot Austin, Myra Tomberlin and Martha Thomas all of Wingate, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grand-children.

James Robert Malloy

CHESTERFIELDMr. James Robert Malloy,83 died Jan. 17, 2008.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Jan. 23 at Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church, Cheraw. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

James was born Nov. 24, 1924, a son of the late Johnson and Kathleen Hinson Molloy. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church where he served as the pastor steward for many years. He was the chairman of the steward board, a class leader, member of the heavenly gates and Pleasant Grove men’s choir. The Spiritual Gospel Singers, Pleasant Grove adult choir and fellowship service committee. He was a longtime member until his illness.

He was a founding member of The Malloy Family Gospel Singers. He worked as a brick mason for Lee’s Construction and retired from Chester-field County Roadwords department as the “best motorgrader operator known” where he served for 30 years. He was a member of the Chesterfield County School Advisory Board until his illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lereain Davis Malloy, a son Burnice Davis; a grandson, Clarence Malloy, Jr.; four sisters, Katherine and Thalia Malloy both of Chesterfield; Florie Malloy of Washington, D.C. and Maggie Lee Wilson of Newark, N.J.; and an aunt, (Ma) Marie Malloy Spencer.

Surviving are two sons, Clarence (Barbara) Malloy of Cheraw and James and Donald (June) Malloy of Irvington, N.J.; four daughters, Sandra (Kenley) Hardison and Gloria (Jimmie) McCoy both of Cheraw, Loranda (Earl) Melton of Columbia and Kathleen Malloy of the home; a granddaughter, Katrina Mallow Commodore of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, John A. Malloy of Chester-field; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grand-child and other relatives and friends.

Mary Lou Rivers

PAGELAND – Mrs. Mary Lou Rivers, 72 died Jan. 31, 2008.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Feb. 3, at Providence Baptist Church, burial followed in the church cemetery.

Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Providence Baptist Church.

Mrs. Rivers was born Feb. 24, 1935, a daughter of the late Clayton David and Lula Marze Clark. She was a graduate of Pageland High School and was a retired textile employee. Mrs. Rivers was a member of Providence Baptist Church, where she served in many positions, including WOM, choir member, and former Sunday school teacher.

She was preceded in death by a brother William Leroy Clark.

Surviving is her husband of 53 years, Harold E. of the home; two sons,  Edward E. (Pam) Rivers of Wingate, N.C. and Jerry L. (Renee) Rivers of Pageland; two daughters, Wanda (Philip) Carr of Linville, Va., and Rhonda (Robert) Sweatt of Marshville, N.C.; a brother Horace (Martha) Clark of Pageland; three sisters, Effie (Bud) Parham of Cornelia, Ga., Betty Krimminger of Charlotte, N.C., and Ann Smith of Rincon, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Joseph (Megan) Rivers, Leanna Rivers, Kevin Sweatt, Kimberly Rivers, Katie Rivers, Steven Sweatt, Morgan Carr, Lauren Carr and Jenna Carr; an adopted daughter Abbey Irvine, and children, Nathan, Chris-topher, and Daniel; and other relatives and friends.

Patsy Kimrey White

CHERAW – Mrs. Patsy Kimrey White, 71, died Jan. 31, 2008.

Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Feb. 3, at Cash Baptist Church. Burial was held in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. White was a daughter of the late Leo and Mable Louise Wilson Kimrey. She was a homemaker and a member of Cash Baptist Church. Patsy was married to the late J. B. White and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jack W Kimrey and Tommy L. Kimrey.

Surviving are two sons, Jimmy (lyall) White and Johnny White both of Cheraw; two grandsons, Andrew White and Jonathan White; a brother, Milton L. “Mickey” (Eva) Kimrey of Cheraw and other relatives and friends.

Rudolph Curry

CHESTERFIELDMr. Rudolph Curry, 73, died Jan. 13, 2008.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Feb. 4, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was held in the Curry Cemetery.

Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mr. Curry was a son of the late Henry Luther and Mollie White Curry. He was a retired painter and a member of Light House Ministry. Rudolph was married to the late Shirley Jean McLain Curry and was also preceded in death  by six brothers, H.L, J.C., Ed, Clarence, Walter and Charlie Curry and by two sisters, Clarice Leslie and Molly Lynn McKain.

Surviving are two sons, Rudy (Teresa) Curry of Patrick and Michael Huggins of Cheraw; three daughters, Kim (Ronnie) Guinn of Chesterfield, Renee Curry of Cheraw, and Shelia (Robert) Glenn of Patrick; two brothers, Robert Curry of Patrick, SC and Wiley Curry of Cheraw; two sisters, Sallie Berrie of Sumter and Bonnie Thurman of Las Vegas, NV; 12 grandchildren and other relatives and friends,

Ruth Lang “McMa” Jordan

CHESTERFIELD Mrs. Ruth Lang “McMa” Jordan, 85, died Feb. 3, 2008.

Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Feb. 6 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Campbell Cemetery.

Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jordan was daughter of the late John Rufus and Sarah Purvis Lang. She was a homemaker and a member of Rose Memorial Church of the Nazarene. Ruth was married to the late Bill Jordan and was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jackie Hurst Jr.

Surviving are two sons, Rev. Billy R. (Betty) Jordan of Chesterfield and Ronnie (Diane) Jordan of Rockingham, N.C.; two daughters, Jenny (Tommy) Melton and Bonnie Hurst (Michael) Canipe both of Chesterfield; three brothers, Bill Lang and Ed Lang of Chesterfield and Johnny Lang of Thomasville, N.C.; two sisters, Carrie Haigler of Concord, N.C. and Lela Boan of Thomasville, N.C.; eight grandchild-ren; 15 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

John Robert Boyle

HAMLET – Mr. John Robert Boyle, 76, died Feb. 1, 2008. Mary Sue Boyle.

The service celebrating his life was held at Marks Creek Presbyterian Church on Feb. 6, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ken Goins and Rev Burke York officiating. Burial followed at Marks Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Sue Holley Boyle and two brothers, Henry and Daniel Boyle.

Surviving is a son, John Robert Boyle II and wife, Deanna of Charlotte, N.C., a daughter; Rebecca Sue Boyle and Rebecca Lenee Bradley of Rockingham, N.C.; three grand-children, Abbie Dawn Boyle, Brittany. Nancy Castelli Deemer

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Nancy Castelli Deemer, 49, died Feb. 13, 2008.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Feb. 17, at Miller-River-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Feb. 16, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Deemer was a daughter of Ann Imbimbo Bass and the late Thomas Castelli. She was a homemaker and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving is her husband, Scott R. Deemer of the home; two step-sons, Scott L. (Pam) Deemer of Ft. Lewis, WA and Sean G. Deemer of Ashville, N.C.; two sisters, Jo Ann (Terry) Crowley and Linda Gay Hunt both of Chesterfield; a step-granddaughter, Emily Grace Deemer and other relatives and friends.

Harold Funderburk

PAGELAND – Harold Funderburk, 100, died Feb. 15, 2008.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Feb. 18, at First Baptist Church of Pageland.  Burial followed in Dudley Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was an hour prior to the service at the church.

He was born April 25, 1907 a son of the late Howard J. Funderburk and Sloan Jones Funderburk. Harold completed his college degree at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky and taught school for many years before joining the Employment Security Commission of South Carolina. This job stationed him in Charleston where he met Rhoda Grainger who gave him his only child, Tammy M. Funderburk . Tammy resides in High Point, NC with Harold’s 3 year-old granddaughter, Zoe Aribella Funderburk.

His numerous activities included many entries in horse shows, farming, raising beef cattle, going to local dances, and actively participating in church services. He was the Sunday school superintendent at Dudley Babist Church for many years as well as a Sunday school teacher. He later joined First Baptist Church of Pageland.

Many will remember “Mr. Harold” and his mule Huldy in the Pageland Watermelon Festival Parade. Huldy lives now on a farm south of Pageland and is doing well. He was always very proud of her.

He was preceded in death by his siblings; Rev. Wade Funderburk, Dr. Guy Funderburk, Coble Funderburk, Oleta F. Winburn, Watha F. Knight, and Azilee F. Byrd.

Surviving is Hampton Funderburk of Monroe, N.C.

Becky F. Tilley Hurst

CHESTERFIELDMrs. Becky F. Tilley Hurst, 53, died Feb. 16, 2008.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Feb. 19, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was held in Oak-land Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield.

Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Monday at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hurst was born Feb. 16, 1955 a daughter of the late Edward Lawrence and Geraldine D. Walker Freyermuth. She was a former day care worker and a homemaker. Becky was a member of Oakland Baptist Church.

Surviving is her husband, Mark Hurst of the home, a sister, Cindi (Pete) Hurst of Chesterfield; four brothers, Edward L. (Cindy) Edward L. Freyermuth, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ and other relatives and friends.

James White, Sr.

CHERAW – Mr. James White, Sr., 73, died Feb. 13, 2008.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Feb 15, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Brock’s Mill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mr. White was a son of the late Will and Mary Elizabeth Atkinson White. He was a former textile employee and a retired employee of Chesterfield General Hospital. James was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Surviving is a son, Buddy (Laura M) White of Florence; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth (Michael) Dixon of Patrick and Vickie (Jerry) Burr of Darl-ington; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Judith “Judy” Leard

PAGELAND – Mrs. Judith “Judy” Leard, 62, died Feb. 16, 2008.

Funeral services were at 4 p.m. Feb. 19, at Fairview Baptist Church. Burial was held in the Church Cemetery.

Viewing was 3-4 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

Mrs. Leard was born Jan. 19, 1946. Judy was baptized on June 22, 2003, and became a member of Fairview Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.

Robert Frank Hightower

WADESBORO, N.C.Mr. Robert Frank Hightower, 84, died Feb. 12, 2008.

 Funeral services were at 2 p.m.   Thursday in David’s Grove Baptist Church, Chesterfield, with Rev William Lewis officiating. Burial followed in Anson Memorial Park, Wadesboro, N.C.

The family greeted friends tonight from 7-9 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home.

Mr. Hightower was born June 29, 1923, a son of the late Mary Moore and Clyde Ellis Hightower. He grew up on the family farm in the Cason Old Field area and was very proud of his Anson County roots.  In 1951 he married Lavinia Dutton who died with cancer in  1985. Mr. Hightower is most remembered for his 57-year tenure in the Anson County Clerk of Court’s Office. Having started in 1949 as a Deputy Clerk, he rose to Assistant Clerk in 1955 and finally to the Clerk’s position in 1976. He then continued as the Clerk of Court until his retirement in 2006. At his retirement celebration, Hightower was presented with one of North Carolina’s highest honors: the Order of the Longleaf Pine, where he joyfully spoke of his time in the Court-house and related some of his favorite stories of memorable court cases.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ed Hightower and sister, Lucille H. Morris.

Surviving is a son Coy Hightower of Morvin, N.C.; a daughter, Beth High-tower Cummings of Wadesboro, N.C.; a grandson, Nicholas Cummings of Lilesville, N.C.; a great-granddaughter, Hailey Cummings of Lilesville, N.C.; two sisters, Kathryn Evans of Wades-boro, N.C. and Mrs. Jean Dobbins of Midland, N.C. a brother, Ed Hightower, and a sister Lucille H. Morris, preceded him in death.

Gilbert Huguelet

HAMLET, N.C. – Gilbert Huguelet, 82, died Feb. 18, 2008 at Caarolina Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 14, 1925 in Rich-mond County. He was a son of the late Arthur G. and Elizabeth Cornwell      Huguelet.

Huguelet served in the U.S. Army during WWII and retired from Dye Music Company.  He attended Faith Freewill Baptist church. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He harvested a deer every season for the last 62 years.

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Faith Freewill Baptist church, the Rev. Steve Pryor, the Rev. Jerry Hall and the Rev. Randy Bishop officiating. Burial will follow at Mary Love Cemetery.

Surviving are a daughter Debbie chavis of Rockingham, N.C.; three grandchildren, Ken and Lucas Chavis of Rockingham, N.C., and Mark Loguidice of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; and his special extended family, Jennie dye, Vernon, Janice and Duke Dye and Ed, Joanne Kimberly and Christopher Ladd and Gwen Ladd

The family received friends Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at Faith Free Will Baptist Church.

James Henry  Wannamaker, Jr.

CHERAW – Wannamaker, 85, died Feb. 22, 2008

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. February 24, at Old St. David’s Cemetery, Cheraw.

He was the only child of  the late James Henry Wannamaker, Sr. and Marian Hurt Wannamaker,  He was grandson of William Edward Hurt, pastor of First Baptist Church of Cheraw, and Lucy Hall Hurt, and of Dr. Theodore Elliott Wannamaker, founder of Wannamaker’s Drug Store in Cheraw, and Harriett Harrington Wannamaker.

In 1937, Mr. Wannamaker attended the first national Boy Scout Jamboree in Washington, DC. He was selected as the outstanding scout from South Carolina. He attended Wafford College and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. He served in World War II in the 26 Photo Reconnaissance Squadron of the Army Air Corps. Three days after returning from the Pacific, he was married to his high school sweetheart, Margaret T. Thurman.

Wannamaker was an active member of the community. He served as president of the Jaycees and served two terms as president of the Cheraw Kiwanis Club. He was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church, serving on nearly every committee. He had a special love for the church’s college scholarship program. He was a director of First Federal Savings and Loan, serving on the bank’s audit committee.

He joined his fater at Wannamaker Oil Co., Inc. immediately after his return from WWII. At the same time, he opened the first appliance business in Cheraw, selling the first television, the first automatic washing machine and the first home freezer in Cheraw. He succeeded his father as president of Wannamaker Oil Co. in 1971.

Wannamaker is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret Thurman Wannamaker; his son James Henry Wannamaker III; daughters, Anne W. Pate, Margaret W. Utsey; grand-children, Haigler H. Pate, Margaret W. Pate Furtak, Blair W. Utsey and Margaret W. Utsey.

Edna Holmes Knox

MYRTLE BEACH Edna Holmes Knox, 83, died Feb. 22, 2008

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 27, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness, Surfside Beach. Burial followed in the Heaven’s Gate Cemetery, Murrells Inlet.

She was born Nov. 15, 1924 to the late David and Beulah Homes.

Visitation was held 7-9 p.m. February 26, in the Ocean View Memorial Chapel.

John D. Keith

CHERAW –John D. Keith, 89, died Feb. 13, 2008.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Feb. 16, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. Burial was held in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

He was a son of the late John and Sudie Walters Keith.  He was a member of lpeasant Grove United Methodist Church, Cheraw. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II, earning a Purple Heart and Silver Star, serving in Normandy; Northern France; Rhineland; Ardennes and Central Europe. He was a Shriner with a 50-year pin.

Surviving are his wife; Ruby Sutton Keith of Cheraw; a son, W. Carey (Nell)Keith of Florence; a daughter, Paulette K. Ballard of Rock Hill; two brothers, Harvey Keith of Cheraw and Howard Keith of Spartanburg; a sister, Sally Baker of Society Hill; five grand-children and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Rochell Keith, Mack Keith, Harold Keith, Zeke Keith, Odell Keith, sisters, Ada K. Johnson and Rezell K. Tucker.

CHERAW – Charlotte Powe Bourne, 79, died Feb. 16, 2008

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at St. David’s Episcopal Church. Burial will be in the Old St. David’s Cemetery.

The family received friends 5-7 p.m. Feb. 18, at Kiser Funeral Home.

She was a daughter of the late James Edward and Gary Evans Powe. She was the widow of Burness “Bird” Bourne, Jr. Bourne graduated from Converse College in 1949 and taught school in Georgetown, where she met her husband.

She was a life long member of St. David’s Episcopal Church. She served on the vestry, the alter guild and was a member of the Bishop Thomas Chapter of the Episcopal Women of the Church. She was also a member of the Old Cheraw’s Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution as a committee chairman, and a member of the Pedee Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of American Colonists as Regent and Historian.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Gary Powe Jarman and a grandson, Burness “Bird” Bourne, IV.

She is survived by her sons, Burness “Burney” (Sue Ella) Bourne, III of Murrells Inlet and James “Jim” (Tami) Bourne of Folly Beach; daughters, Charlotte B. (Mike) Flint of Mt. Pleasant; Margaret B (Tommy) Stafford of Lexington; and Elizabeth Evans Bourne of Murrells Inlet; grandchildren, David (Laura) Flint, Michael Flint, Stephen Flint, Charlotte Flint, Thomas Stafford, Katharine Stafford, Sarah Stafford, Rachel (Brandon) Bourne Shaw, and Mary Margaret Bourne; great-grandchildren, Thomas Flint, Ashley Flint, Hannah Flint; sisters, Susie Powe Huggins and Mary Emma Powe Wallace both of Cheraw.

Juanita “Tillie” Kelly Butler

WADESBORO, N.C. – Juanita “Tillie” Kelly Butler, 77, died Feb. 9, 2008.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., at Westside Baptist Church in Cheraw. Burial was held in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Born Dec. 7, she was a daughter of the late Curley Dew and Lillie Mae Carter Kelly. She was the widow of R. D. Butler. (Married for 54 years.) She was a member of Westside Baptist Church in Cheraw, where she had served as president of the WMU, adult Sunday school teacher, and a long time member of the choir. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, also, a brother, Leonard J. Kelly.

She is survived by a son Randy Butler of Cheraw; two daughters, Cheryl B Heustess of Cheraw and Teri B. Pruitt of Little River; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Willie R. Kelly and Wayne Kelly, both of Wadesboro, N.C.; three sisters, Mary Ruth K. Treadaway and Betty Jo Deese both of Wadesboro, N.C. and Julie G. Grooms of Lilesville, N.C.

SOCIETY HILL - Mrs. Dessie Brigman Barrington, 74, died Feb. 21, 2008

Mrs. Barrington was born Feb 14, 1934, a daughter of the late Willie Lester and Flossie Steen Brigman. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Community Baptist Church. Dessie was married to the late Nelson Eugene Barrington, and was also preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Parker and Regina Wallace, and a brother, Fred Ray Brigman.

Surviving is a son, Nelson (Vonda) Barrington of Society Hill; a daughter, Dorothy B. (Richard) Huff of Society Hill; four grandchildren, Nick Bar-rington, Chris Huff, Willie Wallace and Wendy Wallace; a half-brother Lester Brigman of McCall; two sisters, Evelina Stubbs of Gibson, N.C., and Pearl Griggs of Wallace.

Mrs. Polson was born October 5, 1929 in Cheraw, SC, a daughter of the late Monroe and Lula Hewett Quick. She was a retired Cheraw Elementary School employee. Mrs. Polson was a member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church.  Lula Mae was married to the late Lonnie H. Polson.

Surviving are four daughters, Mary (Jimmy) Higgins of Hampstead, N.C., Janice Rivers of Asheboro, N.C., Shirley (Ralph) Grant and Lisa H. Polson both of Cheraw; a step-son, Wayne H. (Cheryl) Polson of Sandy Springs; a brother, Tillman Quick of Patrick; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Veda Freeman Watson

KINSTON, N.C.Veda Freeman Watson died Feb. 19, 2008

She served her Lord and loved the people of Bethel Free Will Baptist Church. She desired to have her funeral at the church; however, because of a previously scheduled youth rall at Bethel, her service was held at Howard-Carter Funeral Home in Kinston, N.C., on Feb. 23, 2008, at 11 a.m. with Rev. David Paramore officiating. Burial followed at Westview Cemetery, Kinston, N.C.

Visitation was held on Feb. 22, 6-8 p.m. at Howard-Carter Funeral Home.

In 1948, she married Thomas Junius Watson and moved to Kinston, N.C. in 1954. She worked as a supervisor at Caswell Center, where she retired in 1989. Veda was a member of Bethel Free Will Baptist Church where she was an active member and sang in the choir for many years. She loved her family and fiends, and one of her greatest joys was to spend time with and cook for them. She enjoyed traveling and visited many countries through-out the world. Five years ago, due to declining health, she moved to Raleigh, N.C.  to be closer to her daughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. “June Bug” Watson, and her mother and father, Mildred Douglass Freeman of Chester-field.

Surviving are her daughters, Linda Watson Hicks and husband, Tom of Amarillo, TX, and Susan Watson Liverman and Gene Liverman of Raleigh, N.C.; sisters, Mazie Freeman Hales and Mary Sue Freeman of Pensacola Beach, Fla. and Sarah Ann Freeman of Sumter; grandson, Brian Thomas Hicks and granddaughter, Kelly Yvonne Hicks, both of Amarillo, TX; great-grandchildren Ryan Thomas Hicks and Chase Anderson Hicks of Amarillo, TX. Ray Harvey Oliver

JEFFERSONMr. Ray Harvey Oliver, 66, died Feb. 21, 2008.

 Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Feb. 23, at Almetta Baptist Church, Jefferson.

Mr. Oliver was born June 8, 1941, a son of the late Reverend Arthur Ganson and Desnie Autrey Oliver. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School. Ray was a former employee of Springs Industries with 28 years of service and was a retired EMT – Intermediate with Chesterfield County Ambulance Services with 26 years service. He was also a member for 26 years with the Jefferson Rescue Squad. Mr. Oliver was a former member and deacon of Almetta Baptist Church for many years, and was now a member of First Freewill Baptist Church of Pageland. Ray preceded in death by his first wife, Gayle Ann Maree Olier and by his brother, Rev. Kenneth Oliver.

Surviving is his wife, Darla Ann Rollings Oliver of the home; a son Johnny Oliver of Lancaster; a daughter, Joy Belk of Lancaster; three step-daughters, Michelle Allen of Hamlet, N.C., Jessica Blackwell of Pageland, and Angela Rollings of Jefferson; three sisters, Rachel Winburn of McBee, Ola Faye Johnson, and Janice Lowery both of Jefferson; five grandchildren and a great-grand-child and other relatives and friends.

MYRTLE BEACHBetty Ann White, 61, died Feb. 21, 2008.

Betty was born July 18, 1946, a daughter of the late Lubert Frazier White, Sr. and the late Emma Lee Parker White.  She was a charter member of Christ United Methodist Church as well as a member of the Crafty Ladies Group at Grand Strand Senior Center.

Surviving is her daughter, Cheri Schmidt and her husband, Ferrell of Myrtle Beach; a brother, Lubert White, Jr. of Cheraw; three grandchildren, Michael Parker, and Peyton Schmidt all of Myrtle Beach.

LANDOVER, MD Mrs. Shirley Ann “Pink” Powe Burwell, 70, died Jan. 23, 2008.

Shirley was born Dec. 11, 1937, a daughter of the late Thomas and Gracie Powe. She graduate from Long High School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Burwell, Sr.; a daughter, Thomasina McNeill; four brothers, Timothy Powe, Willie Powe, Clarence Powe, Theodore Powe, and a sister; Lourdine Powe Watson.

Surviving is a son, George E. (Marveline) Burwell, Jr.; two daughters, Tarria Burwell (Leroy Hayes). Kelli (James) Davis; a brother, Arthur Louis Powe of Cheraw; 11 grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

CHERAW – Mr. Richard Harvey Love, 46, died February 27, 2008

Funeral services were at 6 p.m. March 2, at Flemming Funeral Home, Pastor Jim Nicholson officiating. Burial was held in Drucilla AME Sion Church Cemetery.

Richard was born May 17, 1961, a son of the late Cora Lee Jefferson Love. He attended Chesterfield schools and was employed 12 years with McCalls Sheet Metal in Cheraw.

Surviving are three sisters, Lee Ann Tisdale (Thalmie) of Charlotte, N.C., Nancy Lee Adams (Morris) of Jacksonville, Fla. CHERAW _ Louise P. Sowell, 94, died Feb. 17, 2008.

Louise was born Nov. 28, 1913 a daughter of the late Arthur W. and Daisy Taylor Hudgins. Her husband, James L. “Jimmy” Sowell, and a brother, George “Buster” Hudgins, preceded her in death.

CHERAW – Joe Louis Lindsey, 65, died Feb. 28, 2008

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. March 4 at Robinson AME zion Church, Cheraw. Burial was held in St. Josephs, Cemetery.

Joe was born Feb. 12, 1943 a son of the late Joe Wilson Henderson and Mary Lee Henderson Lindsey. He grew up in Wallace and Cheraw areas, attending the public schools of Chesterfield County and graduating from Long High School in the Class of 1961.

He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Robinson AME Zion Church where he served on the trustee board and as custodian of Robinson and Midway Churches.

Surviving is a daughter, Ella L. (willie) Banks of Cheraw; two brothers, John W. Lindsey of Sanford, N.C. and Albert Lindsey Milkton of N.J.; five sisters, Mary F. Pratt, of Milkton, N.J.. Sarah Huntley and Roberta Tillman both of Morven, N.C., Alberta Henderson of Camden, N.J. and Mary Jo Halachi of Cheraw; three grand children, Stacy, Willie Jr. and Matthew Banks all of Cheraw; three great-grandchildren; a god-grandson, Da’Shawn Broadie; a god-grandson, Yusef Harris and a god-daughter, Suedonna Harris and other relatives and friends.

Pink Patrick, Jr.

CHERAW – Mr. Pink Patrick, Jr., 89, died March 6, 2008.

Funeral services weree aat 1 p.m. March 11 at Grace Temple Fellowship Church, Wallace. Burial was held at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Pink was born May 23, 1918, a son of the late Lizzie (Duncan) and Pink Patrick, Sr. He lived in the Cheraw community for 89 years. During this span, two children were born Pink LaCoast of Myrtle Beach and Vivian LeNette Patrick of the home from his union with the late Alberta. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and later became and associate member of Grace Temple Fellowship Church,

Mr. Pink’s working career extended from the building of Hwy 52 from Wadesboro, N.C. to Charleston and 30 years with Seaboard Coast Line Railroad.

In his previous union to Elma, three children Jimmie D. (Geneva-Diane) of Atlanta, Ga., Marilyn A. Alan) of Atlanta, Ga., Bennie J. (Monika) of Germany with endearing love for Julius A. (Joyce) of Huntsville, Ala.

He was preceded in death by sibilings, Ernest (Emma) of Washington, D.C., Marion (Ollie) and Willie Mae (William) of Cheraw.

Surviving also is a sister, Julia of Hartford, Conn.; three grand-daughters, Robyn (Dexter and Aminah), Rochelle, and Lesley; these unions produced six granddaughters, six grandsons and 16 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends,

Thomas James Dixon, Sr.

CHERAW – Thomas James Dixon, Sr., 81, died Feb. 26, 2008.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. March 3, at Pee Dee Union Baptist Church. Burial was held at Chatham Hills Memorial Gardens,

Thomas was born July 6, 1926. He was educated in the public schools of Chesterfield. In November 1945, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served his country during World War II

 

in the Philippines. His pastime was fishing.

During his later years he accepted Christ as his personal Savior.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thermantha Braxton.

CHERAW – Mary Ellen Drake, 53, died Feb. 21, 200

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Feb. 26 at Grace Temple Fellowship Church. Burial was held in Fisher Hill Cemetery.

Mary was born July 25, 1954 to the late George Washington and Mary Louise Harrington Coit. She graduated in 1972 where she attended the public schools of Marlboro County. She was employed at INA Bearing until her health failed. She was a member of Greater Outreach Tabernacle Church, Cheraw and served as a member of the praise team and the choir.

She was formally married to Maxson Drake, Sr. to this union three children were born. She was later blessed with another child.

She was preceded in death by a brother, George Edward Coit.

Surviving are four children, Maxson Drake, Jr. of Cheraw, Michael Drake of Clio, Petty Officer Second Class Crystal (Cory) Teach of Hampton Va. And Dylan Davis of the home; five

Edna Jefferson Hillian

CHESTERFIELD – Edma Jefferson Hillian; 78, died Feb. 27, 2008

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. March 1 at Drucilla AME Zion Church. Burial was held in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Edna was born Aug. 18, 1929 a daughter of the late William and Sally Jefferson. She attended Drucilla Public School and graduated from Chesterfield Colored High School in 1951. After graduation, she became a dedicated domestic worker for over 20 years.  In 1962, she earned a certification in Civil Defense (Individual, Family and Community Preparedness) from the State of South Carolina’s Department of Education. She joined the Grandview Presbyterian Church at an early age where shee maintained a life long membership.

Throughout the years, Edna worked many jobs including James Fabrics, Cheraw Manor, Special Needs Daycare, Cuddy Farmes and Spartan Food Company (Hardee’s) where she was well known for baking her famous biscuits. She also enjoyed family dinner parties and baking cakes and pies for the community.

In 1963, she was married to James T. Hillian, Sr. They were married for 45 years.

She was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Hillian; two daughters, Mary and Juanita Hillian; four brothers, Lindsey, Sears, John and Captain Jefferson.

Surviving is a daughter, SCDC Officer Sally Beatrice (William) McQueen of Cheraw; Retired Major (USA) Jacqueline A. (B.B.) Hillian-Craig of Pflugerville, TX; SCDNR SGT John F. (Wilma) Hillian of Cheraw; two brothers, Jerry Jefferson of Greens-boro, N.C. and Howard Jefferson of Spartanburg; two sisters, Sarah B. William Herbert McCromick

ELLERBEE, NC Mr. William Herbert McCromick, 79, died, Wednesday, March 12, 2008.

 

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Saturday, March 15th at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe with Rev. John Stone officiating. Interment will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery.

The family received friends Friday evening from 7-9 pm at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe, N. C.

He was born February 2. 1929 in Ellerbee, a son of the late John William and Laura Jane Talbert McCromick.  Mr. McCromick was a farmer and worked as a machinist with CSX Railroad and worked previously as a mechanic with Commonwealth Hosiery Mill. He served in the U. S. Army.  

 Mr. McCormick was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Puckett McCormick, a grandson, James Michael Heavner, and siblings, Lucille Faircloth, Frank McCormick, Bill McCormick, and Marion McCormick.

 

Surviving are a son, William H. McCormick, Jr. and wife Jatana of Rockingham, N.C.; two daughters,

Joe was born June 17, 1933, a son of the late. James Smith and Hattie Smith Bennett. He was reared by his grandfa­ther, the late Tom Horne. He retired from Marsh Sheet Metal in Cheraw after 30 years as a welder.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jaunita .Horne; a son, Samuel Streater; granddaughter, Angela Horne, and a brother, George William Home.

Cletus was a son of the late Traywick  and Anna Doster. He was converted at an  early age and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in his younger] years and' later joined

Rhode Branch AME Zion Church,

 

where he has been a member for the past 20 years.

 

He was married to the late Catherine B. Doster and was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Clyburn.

 

Surviving is his wife, Orlandia H. Doster of Mt. Lloyd Merriman

 

CHERAW – Lloyd Merriman died.

 

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. March 11 at Pleasant Grove AME Sion Church, Cheraw. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

 

Mr. Lloyd Merriman, or “Mr. Lloyd”. As he was affectionately called, was born Jan. 13, 1923 to the late Leon and Leanna Streater Merriman.  Mr. Lloyd was devoted to his eleven children and did whatever it took to work and provide for them, after Mrs. Ada Mae’s untimely death at the age of thirty-six years old.

 

Mr. Lloyd was a multi-talented individual who was self taught and multi-disciplined at many trades. This led him to be a dedicated employee of Calvin Rivers Farms and self-employed as an auto mechanic.

Mr. Lloyd was an active member of Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church. As a very respected and sociable man, he had an extensive circle of friends. He was a principled and outspoken individual and he embodied a very vibrant classy spirit.

 

Mr. Lloyd was preceded in deathy by five siblings, Floyd Merriman, Willies Merriman, Burlin Merriman, Donetta Leak and Mary Pegues

 

Surviving are three sons, Jerome (Dorothy) Merriman of Morven, N.C., Tyrone (Gladys) Merriman of Cheraw, and Timothy (Sharon) Merriman of High Point, N.C.; eight daughters, Mary C. Rosa Woodward Wise

 

RUBY – Mrs. Rosa Woodward Wise , 90, died March 12, 2008.

 

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. March 15, at Fairview Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Friday at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield.

 

Mrs. Rosa was born Oct. 14, 1917 a daughter of the late Joseph Hebron Woodward and Mary Elizabeth Steen Woodward.  She moved to Kannapolis, N.C. as a young girl and after the start of WWII, she and her lifelong friend E. Merle Overcash went to Bridgeport, Conn., where they became original, Rosie the Rivioters by working in shipyard.

 

She eventually returned to the Carolinas where she married Mr. Roscoe Wise.  Before returning to Ruby, they settled in Kannapolis, N.C. for a short time where they both worked in the cotton mills.  After relocating back to Ruby Mrs. Rosa eventually become a homemaker and caretaker for the elderly and sick. She  did this for many years.  Rosa was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Grace W. Williams and Sarah W. Baker.

 

Surviving is a daughter, Paula Lynn Wise of Ruby; a stepson, Charles Lynn Wise of Lexington, N.C.; a brother Eugene Gene (Lona Mae) Woodward of Ruby; two sisters Cora Bell Grass of Kannapolis, N.C. and Beatrice Oliver of Ruby and a cousin, Geraldine Gulledge; and other relatives and friends.

CHERAW – Mrs. Lou Ellen Lear, 78, died March 17, 2008

 

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. March 19, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield.

 

Mrs. Lear was born December 18, 1929 in Greenville, SC a daughter of the late Minnie Turner.  She was a retired textile employee.  Lou was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church.

 

Surviving is her husband, Dewey T. Lear of the home; four sons, Charles (Libby) Tucker and Ricky (Denise) Tucker all of Rock Hill, Jerry Wayne Tucker and Donnie (Bonnie) Tucker all of Cheraw: a daughter Linda Tucker of Rock Hill; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

CHERAW – Mr. Howard W. Boan, Sr., 86, died March 13, 2008.

 

Funeral services were at 3 p.m. March 16, at Westside Baptist Church. Burial followed in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

 

Visitation was 5-7 p.m. Saturday at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

 

Mr. Boan was a son of the late Ira Walker Boan, Sr. and Mattie Lou Board Boan. He was a graduate of Cheraw High School and a retired sales manager with American Bakeries. Mr. Boan was a life-long, faithful, member of Westside Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and a member of the American Legion Post 74. Howard was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Sarah Phillips Boan, his brothers, Ira W. Boan, Jr. and Paul J. Boan, and by his sister, Edell Boan Polson.

 

Surviving is a son, H. Walker Boan and wife of Inman; a daughter Diane Boan-Donaldson and husband James B. Donaldson of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Beth Boan O,Neal and Husband Jimmy of Cheraw, James Walker Donaldson of Chapel Hill, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Richard, Alex, and Jacob Evans of Cheraw; and a sister, Mary Lou Boan (Bill) Jacobs of Cheraw and other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Maloch was born Feb. 17, 1924 a daughter of the late James Wilcox Hill and Louise Jackson Hill. She was a retired Library Assistant with the Chesterfield County Library and a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church. Lib was married to the late John B. Maloch and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Elizabeth Maloch and by her three brothers, Jack, Edward, and Son Hill.

 

Surviving is a son, John (Mary) Maloch, Jr. of Cheraw, two daughters, Linda M. (Tommy) Fowler of Charleston and Mary Bell of Charlotte, N.C. ; eight grandchildren, Sharon Fowler, Leigh (Jay) Philon, Gregory Sellers, Jennifer (Chris) Chisam, Kimberly Bell, John (Christina) Maloch, III, Amber Maloch, and Holly Maloch; seven great-grandchildren, Kali Daniels, Jake Philon, Karre Sellers, Lathan Sellers, Madison Chisam, Courtney Chisam, and Ashlyn Maloch.

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Helen McKenzie Burr, 81, died March 13, 2008.

Mrs. Burr was a daughter of the late Oliver Cleveland and Florence Parker

McKenzie. She was a graduate of Robert Fletcher Memorial High School and was a retired seamstress.

 

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, James Murray Burr and a grandson James William Eddins.

 

Surviving is a daughter, Mary Alice Burr of Clio; two grandchildren, Teresa (Richard) Preston of Clio, and Danny (Deanna) Eddins of Chesterfield; a brother, Douglas (Lena) McKenzie of Bennettsville; a sister, Eva M. Ronald T. Moore

 

Auburn, GA.Ronald T. Moore, son of Sadie Ruth Lisenby Moore and the late Clarence E. Moore, passed away on March 6, 2008, Ron was 65 years old.  Hwas married to Marcia Burgess Moore and they had two sons, Chris and Matt Moore.

 

Ron graduated from Camden High School. He attended Clemson University then went in to the U.S. Navy. He served 20 years in the submarine division. After the Navy service, he worked for Locke Heed for 18 years.

HARTSVILLE - Lydia Anne Morris Johnson, 75, died March 24, 2008.


Funeral services will be held at

Lydia was born Dec. 15,1932 a daughter of the late Rev. Clarence and Eunice Bradshaw Morris. She was the widow of Murray "Junior" Johnson she was a daughter of the late Rev. Clarence and Eunice Bradshaw Morris. She was a member of the Clyde Church of God and was a Sunday school teacher. She was retired from Kendall and was a seamstress at 60 Minute Cleaners and her home. She was big Bam-ma on the front porch, and loved her children and grand-children.

She was preceded in death her son, Randy Johnson.

William E. MacLauchlin, Jr.

 

CLERMONT, FLA. - Bill MacLauchlin, 86, died Feb. 16, 2008.


A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. March 20, at South Lake Presbyterian Church, 131 Chestnut Street, Clermont, Fla. Burial will be held April 5, at 9 a.m. in Old St. David's Cemetery in Cheraw.


Born
Aug. 15, 1921 he was the son of William Edward MacLauchlin, Sr., and Elizabeth Waddill MacLauchlin. He graduated from Columbia High School and Davidson College. After serving in the Fighting 69th Infantry Division of the United States Army from 1943- 1946, he earned an M.S.W. degree from Tulane University and became a counselor for the Y.M.C.A. in New Orleans, LA. From 1951-1961 Bill worked as a salesman for Moore Business Forms in New Orleans and in Montgomery, Ala.


He then moved to
Sanford, Fla. and achieved his longstanding goal to own a business, becoming President of Celery City Printing Co., Inc. He was a member of the board of the Printing Industries of Florida and served as President of the Graphic Arts Association of Central Florida.


In 1983 he was named Central Florida Printer of the Year. He was also a member of the Seminole County Tourist Development Council and served as President of the Sanford Lions Club, two terms as President of the Scottish American Society and one as President of the Saint Andrews Society.

In addition, Bill was Chairman of the Seminole County School Advisory Committee, a Director for the Central

 

Florida Zoo and served two terms as Chairman of the Salvation Army Board. An active Presbyterian from birth, he served as Sunday school teacher, Deacon and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Sanford, Fla.

Bill was predeceased by his first wife, Ann Catherine Clark of
Shreveport, LA; a daughter, Lynn Bedford MacLauchlin; a sister, Ellen Kollock MacLauchlin; and daughter, Barrie George.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church. Bobbie Jean was married for 45 years to the late Fletcher J. Johnson, Jr. and was also preceded in death by a son, Dr. Jimmy Johnson; four brothers, Wilson, Tommy, William, and Bonnie Lewis, and two sisters, Mary Lee Gulledge and Martha Stafford.

WHITE ROCK - Mrs. Ruth Sellers Wannamaker, 91, died March 22, 2008.

Born
Jan. 14, 1917 in Chesterfield County to Thomas Sinclair and Cora Oliver Sellers, she was one of 14 children who lived past infancy. Ruth was a talented seamstress, enjoyed gardening, was an excellent cook, and loved to help others. She spent most

 

 

 

 

of her life in Hartsville and was a longtime member of West Hartsville Baptist Church.

Funeral services were at 3 p.m. March 24, at Hopewell Baptist Church in Chesterfield. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Visitation was 1:30-3 p.m. prior to the service in the church.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Lloyd, Jim, Charles, Bert Lee, Ed and Lin Sellers, and a sister, Mary Huntley.

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. - Mr. Wilton B. "Mack" Mackall, 88, died March 15, 2008.

Mr. Mackall was born
Jan. 14, 1920. He served in WWII and was recalled to service for the Korean Conflict. Mr. Mackall served in 2 Governors’ Cabinets as Florida State Director of Veteran Affairs, and retired from state government. Mack also retired from VA-Bay Pines and from the U.S. Air Force, where he was a Senior Master Sergeant.

 

Surviving is his wife of 48 years, Julia Davis Mackall of the home and other relatives and friends.

Nov. 11, 1925 a daughter of the late James Walter and Vera Catherine Oakley Wilkes. She was a retired employee of Allied Department Stores and a member of Westfield Creek Baptist Church. May Belle was married to the late Ben Teal, and was also preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Teal, and by her brother, James Wilkes.

SOCIETY HILL, SC - Henry Cannon Hudson, 76, died March 24, 2008.

2 p.m. at Welsh Neck Baptist Church. The Reverend Marvin Lynch officiated with burial following in the adjacent church cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. March 27 at Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home in Darlington.

Born
Jan. 25, 1932, he was the son of the late James C. and Rosa Mathis Hudson. He attended Chesterfield and Darlington County schools, graduating from St. David's Academy in 1950. His career in retail spanned over 40 years in Society Hill working for Sompayrac's Hardware, Coker & Rogers General Mercantile, and Fastfare, all in Society Hill. Retired for over 16 years, he spent most of his time at Hill's Service Station reminiscing with Nancy Hill Baker, her family, and Molly, the dog. He served as a historian for Society Hill.

His hobbies included collecting vintage bottles, various metals, and other unique items. He was an avid reader, especially of history and enjoyed NASCAR racing. He was a long-time active member of
Welsh Neck Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and was active on the church social committee for many years, and most recently served as Assistant Sunday School Secretary.


He was predeceased by his brother James C. "Jimmy" Hudson. In addition to his brother's children, he is survived by a host of nieces and nephews, his church family, and many friends.

He is survived by four sisters: Margaret H. Patterson and Lola H. Driggers both of
Laurinburg, N.C.; Annie Lee H. Engressia of Orlando, Fla.; and Mary Lou H. Hill of Moncks Corner and other relatives and friends.

BENNETTSVILLE -- Mr. Powers, 91, died March 24, 2008.


Funeral service for Edgar Kinney Powers will be held at
2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Whitner-Evans Funeral Home with burial following in Sunset Memorial Park.


He was the son of the late Nola Barnhardt and John Luther Powers. He attended
Fork Union Military Academy and graduated from the McCallie School. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and while stationed in India, he met his late wife, Dorothy Pratt Powers of Sumter, who was with the American Red Cross there.

After the war, he returned to Bennettsville and was manager of Hotel Powers and Powers Oil Company for many years. He was an active member of Bennettsville Rotary Club for 68 years and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served on Bennetsville City Council and was a member of Marlboro Country Club, Marlboro Cotillion Club and
Thomas Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

He was predeceased by his wife, a daughter, Edna Elizabeth Powers; a twin brother, Ervin T. Powers Jr. and Robert W. Powers; and a sister, Mrs. James T. (Thelma) Irvin.
Surviving are his children, Edgar K. Powers, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., Mary Lou Powers of
Woodville, WA, and Patricia Powers of Beaufort; a sister, Mrs. James P. (Nola Jane) Covington of Columbia; and other relatives and friends.

SOCIETY HILL - Daisy Hill Chapman, 66, died March 26, 2008.


Funeral services were held at
11 a.m. March 29, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church. The Revs. Marvin Lynch and Tom Rutan officiated with burial in Welsh Neck Baptist Cemetery.

5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Daisy was born
July 11th, 1941 a daughter of the late Leslie L. and Nellie Bradshaw Hill. In 1962 she received a nursing degree from Columbia Hospital of Richland County, Columbia. She moved to West Columbia where she was instrumental in establishing the Neo-Natal Unit at Palmetto Richland Hospital.

She was the first recipient and namesake for the "Daisy Award" for nursing excellence,
September 24, 1981, given every year in her honor. She dedicated her life to nursing until her retirement.


Surviving are her sons, Chris (Ruth) Chapman of Lexington, Phillip Chapman of
Lexington; a daughter, Susan C. Harry Walker Weede, Sr

 

CHERAW - Harry Walker Weede, Sr., died March 28, 2008.


A memorial service was held at
Scotia Village in Laurinburg at 10:30 a.m. March 31, and later that day at 4 p.m. a funeral service was held at Cheraw First Baptist Church, followed by burial at old St. David's Cemetery.


Visitation was held at Kiser Funeral Home from
4-6 p.m. March 30.


Born
Dec. 17, 1913, Mr. Weede was the son of the late Lewis Tilden Weede and Roxanna Respass Weede. Educated in the public schools of Plymouth, he later managed a retail variety store in Scotland, Neck, N.C., where he met his wife-to-be, Kate Conn Covington, then a teacher in the public schools of Scotland Neck.


Mr. and Mrs. Weede were married in 1938, the first couple to be married in the new sanctuary of
Cheraw First Baptist Church. The couple moved to Cheraw on a permanent basis in 1949 and joined First Baptist. Mr. Weede has been a member for almost 60 years and serving for several terms as a deacon.

In 1939, Mr. Weede joined the Colgate Palmolive Company as a sales representative and later served as district sales supervisor for portions of Virginia and North Carolina. In 1949 he accepted a position with the Allison-Erwin Company, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., as an area sales manager in North and South Carolina. Mr. Weede continued with Allison-Erwin until his retirement in Cheraw, in 1975.

Mr. Weede was a follower and supporter of athletics at the
University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He was a 25-year member of the Rams Club, and until recently, rarely missed a football game.


Mr. Weede was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 59 years, Kate Covington Weede.


Surviving are his children, Katherine Weede Griggs of Cheraw, Harry Walker Weede, Jr., of
Chapel Hill, N.C., Sally Weede Kingsley of Atlanta, Ga., and William Lewis Weede of Greenville, 10 grandchildren, and eight great-grand-children.

Lewis M. Kimrey, Sr.

 

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Lewis M. Kimrey, Sr, 80, died March 22, 2008.

A service was held at11:00 a.m. March 26, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Grant Hoffman officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends
7-8:30 p.m. March 25, at McEwen - Mint Hill Chapel.

Mr. Kimrey was born
July 30, 1927 the son of the late Manlove and Lillian English Kimrey. He attended school in Cheraw and retired after 19 years of service with Johnson Motor Lines and then retired again from McWhirter Grading Co. at the age of 75. Mr. Kimrey was a member of Local #71, a former member of the Masonic Lodge #262 and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country during W.W. II. Mr. Kimrey will be remembered as a loving husband and father and a mentor to all.


Surviving is his beloved wife of 56 years, Kathryn Adams Kimrey; sons, Lewis M. Kimrey, Jr, and his wife Kay H. Kimrey, Joseph W. Kimrey, and his wife, Lisa 'Jamie' Kimrey; daughters, Kathryn K. Phillips, and her husband, John R. Phillips and Lisa K. McGee, and her husband, Allen C. McGee; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Thelma A. Sullivan

 

PAGELAND - Thelma A. Sullivan, 82, died March 28, 2008.


Funeral services were held at
2 p.m. Sunday at Fork Creek United Methodist Church. The family received friends on Saturday, 6-8 p.m. at Sutton Funeral Home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred S. Sullivan; and two grandchildren, Shannon Leigh Sullivan and Lori Lynette Sullivan.


Surviving are her sons, Jerry (Jill) Sullivan and Donnie (Judy) Sullivan, both of Pageland, and Mickey (Gwen) Sullivan of Cheraw; daughters, Shirley (Vernon) Carter, and Debbie Helms, both of Pageland; a sister, Nell Threatt of Rock Hill; grandchildren, Anna Hancock, Aleshia Fournier, Lin Carter, Stephanie Kirby, Stephen Sullivan, Don Sullivan, Wendy Thomas, Michael B. Sullivan, Jennifer Currence, Donald Helms, and Daniel Helms; and 23 great grandchildren.

Detha Mae Isaac

 

CHERAW - Detha Mae Isaac, 64, died March 15, 2008.


Funeral services were at
2 p.m. March 22, Mt. Mary Baptist Church. Burial was held in the church cemetery.


Detha was born
Sept. 11, 1943 a daughter of the late James Ruben and the late Annie McQueen Ruben. She was educated in the public schools of Chesterfield County. During her early life she attended Morning Star Baptist Church. She was married to the late Leverne Isaac, Sr.


She was preceded in death by a sister, six brothers and two grandchildren.

Surviving are six daughters, Mary (Donnell) Ervin and Annie Pearl Isaac of Patrick, Cindy Michelle Isaac, Oleshia Isaac, Jamie Isaac and Raven Isaac all of Rockingham, N.C.; four sons, Leverne (Joyce) Isaac, Jr. of Patrick, Vernon (Sharon) Isaac and Steven (Deloris) Isaac of Cheraw and Floyd Isaac of Boston, Mass.; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mabel Horn and Edna Pate of Baltimore, MD, Ernestine Little of Patrick and Margaret Isaac of Cheraw and other relatives and friends.

Isabell Ellerbe

 

CHERAW - Isabell Ellerbe, 78, died March 20, 2008.


Funeral services were at
2 p.m. March 25 at Pee Dee Union Baptist Church. Burial was held in Montrose Cemetery.

Isabell was born
July 12, 1929 a daughter of the late Anderson and Lannie Burns. She was converted at an early age and joined New Zion Baptist Church in the Cash Community. She later became a member of Pee Dee Union Baptist Church. There she was a member of the Pee Dee Choral Ensemble where she served for many years. She was with the choir when they made their album. Isabell was also a member of the Whosoever Will Club of Pee Dee, until her health failed.

She worked at
Robert Smalls School in the cafeteria, Robinson Factory, and ARA Services for 12 years. And attended Young School in the Cash Community and then Coulter Memorial Academy in Cheraw.


She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ernest, Robert and Anderson, Jr. and four sisters, Ara, Pearlie Mae, Flora and Hattie Mae.

Surviving are two daughters, Delores Ellerbe and Sarah (Craig) Gary of Cheraw; two sons, Henry (Bernadette) Ellerbe and Jerome (Mary Francis) Ellerbe of Cheraw; three sisters, Elizabeth Godfrey of
Delaware, Ophelia (James) Ellerbe and Carolyn Patterson of Cheraw; 14 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and a grandchild, RaeKwon.

PAGELAND -- Mrs. Sikes, 70, died April 4, 2008.

Mrs. Sikes was born
Dec. 28, 1937, a daughter of Virginia Vaughn Haithcock and the late Charlie Haithcock. She was a retired secretary with Culp Weaving and was a former secretary with SLS Corp. Mrs. Sikes was a member of Providence Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, choir member, and a member of the Praise Team. Helen was married to the late Eli Sikes and was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Nadel.

Surviving are two daughters, Lisa (David) Gardner of Pageland and Kimberly Plyler (Craig Wetzel) of
Waxhaw, N.C.; a brother, Eddie (Margaret) Haithcock of Hilton Head; three sisters, Bonnie Jordan and Tillie (Bert) Jackson of Pageland, and Wanda Goodall of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren, Candice (Justin) Seaverns and Nathan Gardner; two great grandchildren, Caitlyn Seaverns and Alexis Ross. Also Ray Deese of Pageland.

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. John Thomas Gaskins, 92, died April 5, 2008.

Mr. Gaskins was born
Dec. 13, 1915, a son of the late William H. "Bill" and Mittie Sellers Gaskins. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Oakland Baptist Church. Mr. Gaskins was preceded in death by a son, William Ervin "Buster" Gaskins.


Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Lois Turner Gaskins of the home; a son, Thomas (Barbara) Gaskins of Pleasant Garden, N.C.; three daughters, Patricia "Sue" (Steve) Young of Pleasant Garden, N.C., Faith Webb of Chesterfield and Dianne (Ronnie) Sellers of Darlington; a sister: Betty Woodward of Ruby; seven grand-children and nine great-grandchildren.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Mrs. Sandra "Sandi" Curtis Squires, 59, died March 27, 2008.

Mrs. Squires was a daughter of the late Gary Franklin and Rebecca Eddins Curtis. She was a homemaker. Sandi was married to the late Boyd Baxter "Skip" Squires, Jr. and was also preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Curtis Mann.


Surviving is a son, Jason Squires (Courtney Flinchum) of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, G.W. "Sam" (Maxine) Curtis of Greensboro, N.C. and Billy Ray Curtis of Chesterfield; two sisters, Patricia Gordon of Randleman, NC and Cheryl Curtis Gleason of Chesterfield.

Mr. Gregory was born
May 25, 1949, a son of the late Alford and Sally Hicks Gregory. He was a drywall contractor. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Jimmy was married to the late Joyce Elaine Gainey Gregory, and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Billy and Kenneth Gregory and two sisters, Annette Watford, and Vera Peach

Surviving is a daughter, Stacey Gregory (Adam) Catoe of Jefferson; two brothers, Tommy Gregory of

Chesterfield, and Randell Gregory of McBee.

CHESTERFIELD -- Mrs. Shaw, 75, died April 2, 2008.

Mrs. Shaw was a daughter of the late Tom and Bessie Vaughn Curtis and step-mother, Becky Kirkley Curtis. She was a former employee of Chesterfield County DSS and a retired employee of Tri-County Mental Health. Mrs. Shaw was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church where she was a former choir member for many years. Alice was preceded in death by a son, Bob Shaw; two grandchildren, Benjamin Shaw and Rebekah Crawley.

Surviving is her husband, Dale Shaw of the home; son, Kenneth (Kathy) Shaw of Chesterfield; daughters, Alice Ann Crawley of Patrick; seven grandchildren, Joseph Shaw, Marie (Danny) Davis, Thomas Shaw, Amanda (Tom) Hashem, Matthew Crawley, Lindsey (Adam) Lewis, and Michael Crawley; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Vonnie Easterling of
Florence.
