Belinda Beverly

WALLACE - Mrs. Belinda Gaile Curtis Beverly, 50, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006.

A funeral service was held at
3 p.m. Dec. 31, 2006, at Cheraw Family Worship Center.

Mrs. Beverly was a daughter of Bobby Bruce Curtis and the late Virginia Duckworth Curtis. She was attending Northeastern Technical College, where she was majoring in the arts to become a teacher. She was a substitute teacher for Wallace Elementary-Middle School, Cheraw High School and Marlboro County High School.

She was a bus driver and cafeteria worker, and will be remembered as a second mother to many who were close to her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Beverly.

Surviving are two children, Barbara Diane Jean Beverly and Eric Curtis; two siblings, Zane and Allen Curtis; and grandchildren, Matthew Troy Alexander Curtis and Morgan Curtis.

Sara Buff Brower

CHERAW - Mrs. Sara Buff “Cricket” Brower, 85, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006.


A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Brower was born in Wadesboro, N.C., a daughter of the late Willie Madison and Sara Caroline Brower Buff. She was a homemaker and a member of Westside Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a husband, Clarence Franklin Brower; son, Clarence A. “Buck” Brower; a brother, William M. Buff; and two sisters, Mary Jane Curlee and Virginia Adams.

Survivors include a son, Tommy (Cindy) Brower of Cheraw; a daughter, Margie B. Riley of Cheraw; two sisters, Pauline B. Smith of Cheraw and Patsy B. Ballard of
Marion; six grand-children; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Clinton Ross Cecil

CHERAW -- Mr. Clinton Ross Cecil, 33, died Dec. 29, 2006.

Services were private.

Mr. Cecil was born in Jacksonville, Ark, a son of Fred Ross and Cynthia Lee Puckett Cecil.

He is survived by his parents of Cheraw; a brother, Jonathan Elwood Cecil; and a sister, Joyce Marie Cecil.

Memorials may be made to Chesterfield Paws and Claws Animal Shelter.

Jaylin Gerod Coachman

BENNETTSVILLE - Master Jaylin Gerod Coachman, 2, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, at McLeod's Regional Medical Center in Florence.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Dec. 29, 2006, at Beaverdam Baptist Church with Minister Pearlie Ellerbe officiating.

Master Coachman was born
Nov. 23, 2004, at Chesterfield General Hospital, a son of Michael Gerod Coachman and Patrice Monic Ridges.

Surviving are his parents; a sister, Carmen Jamiyah Coachman; grand-parents, Michael (Addie) Coachman, Bridgett (Robert) Easterling and Jerome (Connie) Ridges; five great-grandparents; and several other relatives and friends.

Charles Cranford

CHESTERFIELD -- Mr. Charles Edward Cranford, 62, died Dec. 15, 2006.

A funeral was held at 2 p.m. Dec. 21 at Cheraw Family Worship Center in Cheraw with the Rev. Dr. James Canty officiating.

Mr. Cranford was born
Dec. 3, 1944, in Chesterfield County. He was a son of the late L.B. and Julia Sellers Cranford. He received his education in public schools. He was a retired employee of International Fertilizer Mill and was a

member of Teals Chapel Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Fannie Mae Cranford of Chesterfield; four daughters, Judy (Eric) Simon and Nicole Cranford, both of Hartsville, Shirley Jackson and Betty (Earl) Jackson, both of Darlington; four sons, Charles Smith of Columbia, Darren Cranford of Chesterfield, Robert (Takia) Cranford of Conneticut and Jerry (Cheryl) Cranford of Darlington; three sisters, Mary Jones, Bessie Wheeler and Patricia Scott, all Chesterfield; five bothers, Dock (Joanne) Cranford, Dennis Cranford, Bobby Cranford and Tommy Cranford, all of Chesterfield, and L.C. (Hattie) Cranford of Hartsville; and several other relatives and friends.

Letha Fowler Crowley

BENNETTSVILLE - Mrs. Letha Fowler Crowley, 82, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006.

A funeral service was held
Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at Whitner-Evans Funeral Home with burial following in Sunset Memorial Park.

Born in Tabor City, N.C., Mrs. Crowley was a daughter of the late Coley Sr. and Flossie Harrelson Fowler. She was a former sales clerk with B.C. Moore's. A Baptist faith, she was a former member of the W.M.U. and GA leader. She was also a former Girl Scout leader.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jennings Crowley.

Surviving are a daughter, Lisa Crowley Jost Hancock of Cheraw; brothers, Coley Fowler and Nathan Crowley, both of Santee, and Duward Fowler of Jonesville, N.C.; and grandchildren, Joshua Jost and Mike Jost.

Glennis Clark Hayes

WALLACE - Mrs. Glennis Clark White Hayes, 81, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at her home.

A funeral service was held Dec. 30, 2006, at Wallace Church of the Nazarene, of which she was a member. Interment followed in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Born in Marlboro County, Mrs. Hayes was a daughter of the late Jessie and Margaret Wilkins Clark. She was a retired nurse, having worked at Chesterfield General Hospital for a number of years.

Mrs. Hayes was preceded in death by her husbands, Clyde White and George M. Hayes; a son, William (Billy) Jesse White; granddaughter, baby girl White; great-grandson, David Rain-water Jr.; great-granddaughter, baby girl Smith; brother, Cameron Clark; and sisters, Reva Mumford and Lula Parker.

She is survived by her children, Betty Lou (Neil Ed) Smith of Ellerbe, N.C., Cathy (Ronnie) Leviner of Cheraw, and Shirley (Gary) McElveen, Peggy Jean Hatcher and Sue and William Byrd, all of Wallace; stepsons, Gerald M. Hayes and Malcolm S. Hayes, both of Bennettsville, and Wayne J. Hayes of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters, Mary Bowen and Vivian Crowley, both of Bennettsville, and Avis White of Wallace; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grand-children.

Jerry Hunt

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Jerry Lee Hunt, 57, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006.

A funeral service was held Jan. 3, 2007, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery with Masonic rites.

Mr. Hunt was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late John B. and Alma Pegues Hunt. He was an electrician with Crown, Cork & Seal Company with 13 years of service.

He was a member and past master of Chesterfield Masonic Lodge 220, and a member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Gibson Hunt of the home; two sons, Tim Hunt and Tom (Angie) Hunt of Chesterfield; a daughter, Beverly (Todd) McCormick of Chesterfield; three grandchildren, Nicole McCormick, Joan Hunt and Kady Hunt; three brothers, Johnny (Diane) Hunt and Tommy (Kathy) Hunt of Chesterfield, and Carlyle (Helen) Smith of Ruby; five sisters, Frances (Jerry Faye) Rivers of Hartsville, Louie Dean (Cliff) Beach of Gloucester, Va., Ann Hunt Bradley of Cheraw, Mary (Tom) Goodale of Chesterfield, Linda (Johnny) Wallace of Hartsville and Brenda (Tommy) Caulder of Chesterfield.

Rodney Lewis

RUBY -- Mr. Rodney Lewis, 40, died Dec. 26, 2006.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Dec. 29, 2006, at Clanton Plains Baptist Church. Burial was held at the church cemetery.

Mr. Lewis was born in Chesterfield, a son of the late Franklin D. “Buck” and Ruth Teal Lewis. He was a carpenter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Carol Gulledge.

He is survived by a stepson, Ricky (April) Gulledge of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Eddie (Myra) Lewis of Heath Springs; three grandchildren, Stephanie (Jamie) Adams, Michael (Shannon) Gulledge and Hannah Gulledge; a great-grandchild, Savannah Adams; and several other relatives and friends.

James Livingston

WADESBORO -- Mr. James Houston “Jimmy” Livingston, 64, died Dec. 26, 2006.

Funeral services were held at
2 p.m. Dec. 29, 2006, in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Lambert and the Rev. Jeff Hart officiating. Interment followed in Anson Memorial Park.

Mr. Livingston was born April 21, 1942, in Anson County, N.C., a son of the late Robert Lee Livingston and Margaret Janie Lewis Livingston Moore. He was retired from Montgomery Motors in Troy and was a member of Cheraw Family Worship Center in Cheraw.

Surviving are his wife, Jane Hamilton Livingston of the home; his children, Rick (Kim) Honeycutt of Conway and Jill (Tommy) Freeman of Troy; his grandchildren, Ali, Alek, Emma, Whitney and Sidney; his brother and sisters, Edd (Carolyn) Livingston, Robbie L. (J.W.) Goodwin and Jackie L. (Julian) White, all of McFarlan, Clara L. (Carrison) Rollins of Cheraw and Margaret L. Sellers of Tabor City; and several other relatives and friends.

Fred Oliver

PATRICK - Mr. Fred Larry Oliver, 58, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006.


A funeral service was held at
2 p.m. Jan. 2, 2007, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in White Oak Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Mr. Oliver was born in Ruby, a son of Mamie Taylor Ratliff and the late Fred Newsom Oliver. He was a carpenter and vinyl siding installer. He was a member of Clanton Plains Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Fred Larry Oliver Jr. of York; two daughters, Cathy (Scottie) Griggs of Ruby and Tammy (Shane) Gordon of Jefferson; his mother and stepfather, Roy Ratliff of McColl; three brothers, the Rev. Joey (Kitty) Oliver of Ruby, Donnie Oliver of Mt. Croghan and Jerry (Gail) Oliver of Bennettsville; two sisters, Vickie (Jennings) Crowley of Bennettsville and Gloria Dale (Jim) Dyer of Seneca; three stepchildren, Regina (Kenny) Sellers and Johnny Roscoe of Patrick, and Barbara Gail (Chris) Sellers of Chesterfield; 12 grandchildren; and several other relatives and friends.

George Ella Malloy

BENNETTSVILLE -- Mrs. George Ella Malloy, 79, died Dec. 27, 2006.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 31, 2006, at Sandy Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Gregory Woods officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Malloy was a daughter of the late David Hodges and Easter Townsend, and was born Dec. 12, 1927, in Marlboro County.

She was a member of Sandy Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member of the senior choir, Mother's Board, Usher Board and Sunday school attendant until her health failed.

She was married to Fred Malloy.

She was preceded in death by three children.

Surviving are her husband of the home; children, George (Barbara) Malloy of Oklahoma, Sarah Malloy of Fayetteville, N.C., Cassandra Turner of Maxton, N.C., Byron (Edith) Malloy of Clio, Addie (Michael) Coachman of Bennettsville and Terry (Donnella) Malloy of McColl; sisters, Morzella Eddy of High Point, N.C., Lillie Mae (William) Smith of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Thurneze (Robert) Verren; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; stepdaughter, Mary Pipkin; and other relatives and friends.

Geneva McQueen

CHERAW -- Mrs. Geneva “Eva” Baskin McQueen, 88, died Dec. 27, 2006, at McLeod Regional Medical Hospital in Florence.

Funeral services were held
Jan. 1, 2007, at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Cheraw, with the Rev. Robert A. Caper officiating. Burial was held in the McQueen Family Cemetery.

Mrs. McQueen was a daughter of the late Josh and Ollie Hancock Baskin, and was born Aug. 14, 1918, in Cheraw.

She attended school at Spencer Chapel in
Chesterfield County. She was a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the senior choir, as church clerk, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, deaconess and mother of the church.

Mrs. McQueen worked at Robertson Factory for a number of years and then moved to Burlington Factory until she retired.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Frank McQueen Sr.

Survivors are two sons, Henry Frank McQueen Jr. and Larry McQueen, both of the home; five daughter, Laura Harris of the home, Abytyne Seltzer of Charlotte, N.C., Ollie V. (Isaiah) Hudley and Joselyn (Olin) Smith, both of Cheraw, and Shelia (Thomas) Chandler of Jersey City, N.J.; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Baskin Lovely of Darlington; and other relatives and friends.

Eli Small Jr.

CHERAW -- Mr. Eli Small Jr., 69, died Dec. 24, 2006.

Funeral services were held Dec. 29, 2006, at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Cheraw, with the Rev. Robert A. Capers officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Small was born July 8, 1937, in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Eli Small Sr. and Nezzie Williams Small.

He was educated in
Chesterfield County, and was a member of Smithville A.M.E. Zion Church. He moved to Washington, D.C., and returned home in 2000. He then joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Stephen Small and Johnnie Davis; and a sister, Bertha McCaskill.

Surviving are his wife, Luella Small; two sons, Floyd Small of
Seattle, Wash., and Sean Small of Bennettsville; two daughters, Rhonda (James) Henderson of Wadesboro and Cynthia Small of Cheraw; 17 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joretta Howard Ballard and Gladys Moore, both of Cheraw; a brother, James Wilson of Baltimore, Md.; and other relatives and friends.

Esther Thompson Spencer

CHERAW -- Mrs. Esther Thompson Spencer, 92, died Dec. 19, 2006.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 22, 2006, at Grooms Funeral Home and Memorial Chapel in Cheraw with the Rev. Dr. C.A. McKinney officiating.

Mrs. Spencer is a daughter of the late Judson and Mary Duncan Thompson. She was born on
Aug. 23, 1914, in Chesterfield County.

She attended Chesterfield County Schools and was a member of Salem Baptist Church of Chesterfield. She later joined the First Baptist Church of Baltimore, Md., where she remained until her health failed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Spencer.

Surviving is her daughter, Jennifer Spencer of Baltimore, Md; two sisters, Ollie Hughes of Cheraw and Virginia Thompson of Youngstown, Ohio, and other relatives and friends.

Aginora Fields Strong

MARLBORO COUNTY -- Mrs. Aginora Fields Strong, 84, died Dec. 25, 2006.

Funeral services were held at
2:30 p.m. Dec. 31, 2006, at St. James Baptist Church in Cheraw with the Rev. Moses Harrington Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Fisher Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Strong was born
March 18, 1922, in Marlboro County, a daughter of the late Lonzo Fields and Connie Moore.

She was a homemaker and industrial worker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Strong; a son, Johnny Winston Strong; and a sister, Ida Mae Talley.

Surviving are five daughter, Wilhelmina (Robert) Brown, Julia Margaret Buchanan, Louise (Mack) Lyles, Carlean (Jesse) James, all of Cheraw, and Georgia Mae (Jerome) McLloyd of Charlotte, W.Va.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and other relatives and friends.

Frances Willmon

RUBY - Mrs. Frances M. Oliver Willmon, 87, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006.

A funeral service was held at
3 p.m. Jan. 1, 2007, at Clanton Plains Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Willmon was born in
Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Walter Edward and Rosie Stephenson Oliver. She was a homemaker and a member of Clanton Plains Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lamar Willmon; and a half sister, Verdie O. Lear.

Surviving are a sister, Mary O. Watson of Ruby; a stepmother, Allie Joplin Oliver of Mt. Croghan; and a number of nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Clemmie White

CHERAW - Mrs. Clemmie Phillips White, 86, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006.

11 a.m. Jan. 2, 2007, at Westside Baptist Church. Burial followed in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. White was born in Chesterfield, a daughter of the late Arthur Battle and Sarah Frances Jones Phillips. She was a graduate of Zoar High School, and was a homemaker and seamstress. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward James White; four brothers,
Battle, John, Mack and Gordon Phillips; and two sisters, Mary P. Pate and Lucille Phillips.

Surviving are three sons, Jim (Kaye) White of Atlanta, Ga., Vernon (Judy) White of Medford, N.J., and Richard (Lupe) White of Cheraw; a daughter, Joan W. Rivers of Cheraw; three sisters, Sarah P. (Howard) Boan of Cheraw, Dorothy P. Zearfoss and Edith P. (Fay) Martin of Chesterfield; a sister-in-law, Flora S. Phillips of Morven; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Doris Folk Brigman

CHERAW - Miss Doris Folk Brigman, 67, died Dec. 1, 2006.

A funeral service was held Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with Burial in the Brigman Cemetery.

Born in Marlboro County, Miss Brigman was a daughter of the late Frank and Inez Rogers Folk. She was a homemaker and attended Lighthouse Church.

She is survived by two sons, Freddie Brigman and Wayne Steven Brigman, both of Wallace; two daughters, Deborah B. Jacobs of Wallace and Connie Hancock of Chesterfield; two brothers, Everette and Lester Folk of Florida; a sister, Mildred Marshall of Dothan, Ala.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Carolyn H. Cranford

MARION - Mrs. Carolyn Harpe Cranford, 70, formerly of Chesterfield, died Jan. 5, 2007.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Jan. 7, 2007, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield. Burial followed at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw.

Mrs. Cranford was born in Chesterfield, a daughter of the late John Colon and Lois Polson Harpe. She was a retired plant controller with International Paper Co. and was a member of Living Faith Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William T. “Bill” Cranford; and two brothers, Benjamin Thomas Harpe and James Colon “J.C.” Harpe.

Surviving are two sons, Jeff (Anne) Cranford of Cheraw and Todd (Katrina) Cranford of Marion; grandchildren,
Taylor, Brittany, Weston and Alaina Cranford; a brother, John Preston Harpe of Bennettsville; and two sisters, Jewel (Gene) Watson of Chesterfield and Margie “Teen” (Chuck) Kline of Warner Robbins, Ga.

William George Dixon

DARLINGTON - William George “Snuff” Dixon, 84, died Jan. 6, 2007, at Bethea Healthcare in Darlington.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at Windsor Park Freewill Baptist Church with interment in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Born in
Chesterfield County, Mr. Dixon was a son of the late John W. and Serena Gainey Dixon. He was retired from Becker Sand and Gravel, where he worked for more than 35 years, and later from Furr Grading and Paving.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Dixon; brothers, James, J.W., Cecil and Wayne Dixon and Lewis Gainey; and sisters, Frances Johnson and Emma Dixon.

Surviving are his four sons, George Dixon Jr. of Cassett, William Wesley Dixon of Society Hill, Jimmy E. Dixon of El Paso, Texas, and Marion Dixon of Cheraw; a daughter, Katherine Hammonds of Pageland; two sisters, Carrie Brewington of Cheraw and Annie Starling of Society Hill; 19 grand-children; and 32 great-grand-children.

ALTAVISTA - Mrs. Katherine “Kitty” Cox Fox, 68, of 1003 Broad Street, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at her residence after a long and courageous illness.

A funeral service was held at
2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at the Finch and Finch Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. James Worley and the Rev. Scott Dean officiating. Interment followed in the Mount Hermon Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Fox was born
July 23, 1938, in Lynch Station, a daughter of the late Wyatt R. and Locke West Cox. She was a member of Lynch Station Baptist Church and a retired repair assembler from the Lane Company.

She was the wife of Percy Lee Fox for 51 years.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, Richard, Robert “Pete,” Harry, Douglas, Milton “Dickom” and John “Tinny” Cox.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Roxann Fox of Forest, Donna F. Hammack and her husband Troy of Gretna, and Sheila F. Little and her husband James of Hurt; two sons, Kenneth W. “Bubba” Fox and his wife Diane of Altavista and Robert D. Mr. McCoy was born

CHERAW - Naomi Graham Leggette, 79, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2007, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Interment will be held at 1 p.m. today in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens in Cheraw.

Mrs. Leggette was born
Nov. 18, 1927, in Cheraw. A member of Christ United Methodist Church, she was a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and sister.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Leggette; her parents, Olin Q. and Nellie Smith Graham; and a brother, William Graham.

Survivors include her son, Kim Leggette and his wife Cindy, of
Jacksonville, Fla.; granddaughters, Kasey Leggette, University of Texas in Austin, Texas, and Hayley Leggette of Jacksonville; and a brother, Tad Graham of Cheraw.

CHERAW - Mr. Bobby Allen Leviner, 62, died Dec. 25, 2006.

Born in
Marlboro County, he was a son of the late Belvin and Vera Chavis Leviner. He was a supervisor with RS&A Piping Company. He was formerly employed at Carolina Canners for many years.

PATRICK - Mr. Fred Larry Oliver, 58, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006.

Mr. Oliver was born in Ruby, a son of Mamie Taylor Ratliff and the late Fred Newsom Oliver. He was a carpenter and vinyl siding installer. He was a member of Clanton Plains Baptist Church.

Survivors include long-time companion, Carolyn Roscoe; a son, Fred Larry Oliver Jr. of York; two daughters, Cathy (Scottie) Griggs of Ruby and Tammy (Shane) Gordon of Jefferson; his mother and stepfather, Roy Ratliff of McColl; three brothers, the Rev. Anna Lee Funderburk Ash Mason

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Anna Lee Funderburk Ash Mason, 73, died Jan. 9, 2007.

A funeral was held at 2 p.m. Jan. 13, at Goodman Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Cheraw. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Mason was born Oct. 10, 1933, the daughter of the late Rev. C.W. Funderburk and Mrs. Anna Crawford Funderburk.

She was the 16th of 18 children and was educated in Chesterfield County Schools and attended
Coulter Academy. Receiving Christ at an early age, she joined Goodman Creek Baptist Church then moved to Brooklyn, NY and found a new church home in Proverbs Church of God In Christ. There she was a pastor aid and mother of the church. Mrs. Mason moved back to Cheraw, rejoined Goodman Creek Baptist Church where she sang with the Mass Choir and Senior Choir, praise team, Missionary Society and pastor aid.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Carl Ash Jr. and LeConda Mason.

Surviving are her son, Larry Calvin Ashe of Cheraw; daughter, Margaret Ann Cue Tate of Cheraw; grandchildren, Raphael Javier Gadson of Cheraw, Sherse (Shon) Dingle and Saquina Ash both of Florence, Ebony Ash of Columbia, Andrew Ash and Andray Ash both of Brooklyn, NY; three great-grandchildren, Lou Ash, Calvin and Michael Dingle of Florence; two sisters, Viola Bridges of Cheraw and Margarine Funderburk of Brooklyn, NY.

Alfred “A.F.” Blakeney

PAGELAND - Mr. Alfred “A.F.” Blakeney, 76, died Jan. 6, 2007.

The funeral was at 2 p.m. Jan. 10, at Salem United Methodist Church, Pageland. The Rev. C.L. Bowman officiated. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

Mr. Blakeney was born Oct. 30, 1921, the son of the late Early and Mavis Blakeney.

At an early age, he joined
Salem United Methodist Church and remained a member. He served as a trustee, member of the United Methodist Men and many other church organizations. He was educated in the Chesterfield County School system and was later drafted into the United States Army where he served in World War II. Mr. Blakeney was employed by the Pageland Coca Cola Bottling Co. for over 40 years. For the past 23 years he owned and operated The Blakeneys Ice Cream and Food Shop in Petersburg.

He was preceded in death by all seven siblings and a son.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Mrs. Ozie Clark Blakeney of the home; two sons, Larry Blakeney Sr. (Barbara) of Mint Hill and Alvin Sanders (Priscilla) of Cheraw; six grandchildren, Larry Blakeney Jr., Natasha Blakeney, Darius Blakeney, Jolanda Blakeney, Marcus Blakeney and Ashton McMillan; three great-grandchildren, Cameron Blakeney, K'ehosa Blakeney, and Nyasha Blakeney, and other relatives and friends.

JEFFERSON, S.C. - Mrs. Corean Brown Baker, 91, died Jan. 4, 2007.

Mrs. Baker was born Oct. 20, 1915, a daughter of the late Earnest Brown and Wincie Collins Brown.

She attended the Chesterfield County Public Schools and was a member of Mt. Elon United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by her husband, George Baker and a daughter, Juiretha Evans.

Mr. McManus was born in
Monroe, NC, a son of Yvonne Knight McManus and the late John Amos McManus. He was a retired pine needle dealer and an avid mule and horse lover.

RUBY - Mr. Charles Wesley Rodgers, 67, died Jan. 13, 2007.

Visitation was held 6-8 p.m. Jan. 14, at the funeral home.

Mr. Rodgers was born in Chesterfield, a son of the late Roy and Mable Roscoe Rodgers. He was a retire employee of the S.C. Department of Highways and Public Transportation and was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. Mr. Rodgers was a member of Palmetto Baptist Church and attended Chester-field Church of God.

Mr. Rodgers was preceded in death by three brothers, Jimmy, Gerald, and

Ray Rodgers and by a sister, Hallie Parnell.

Surviving are his wife, Susie Moore Rodgers of the home; four step-sons, Paul Wilson of England, Fred Jenkins, Ricky Jenkins and Randy Jenkins all of Ruby; three step-daughters, Pauline Brock of Colorado, Elizabeth Craven of England, and Margie Black of Mt. Mrs. Smith was born in Chesterfield, a daughter of the late General Lee and Sue Burch Moore. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Smith was a lifelong member of Thompson Creek Baptist Church and was the oldest member at the time of her death. Her joy in life was helping and doing things for others.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Bivens Smith; three brothers, Robert, Wilson and Jafus Moore, a half-brother, Clyde Burch, and by four sisters, Mattie Gibson, Florence Helpler, Vivian Smith and Ethel Pinkston.

Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her husband, Battle M. Phillips and three sons, Bobby, Jerry, and Ricky Phillips.

WADESBORO - Miss Hazel Becky Wright, 60 died Jan. 11, 2007.

Hazel was born Oct. 9, 1946, a daughter of the late Owen Williams and Hallie Becky Griffin Wright. She had worked with Anson Shirt Factory in Wadesboro and attended the Wadesboro Church of God.

CHERAW - Mr. Rivers Hailey Sr., 79, died Jan. 9, 2007.

Mr. Hailey was born Oct. 20, 1927, a son of the late John and Lena Hailey.

He grew up in Cash Community where he also attended school. And received Christ at an early age and became a member of
Macedonia Baptist Church where he served until his health failed. Mr. Hailey was a member of the Trustee Board.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Earline Hailey; a daughter, Evonne Brown; two brothers, Buster and Son John Hailey; and a sister, Mary Jane McClendon.

Surviving is three children, Rose Mae (Thomas) Bethea, Rivers (Willa Dean) Hailey Jr., Barbara Ann (Julius) Stubbs; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Katherine Hailey, Mary L. Ephraim (Jack) Buchanan Sr.

CHERAW - Mr. Ephraim (Jack) Buchanan Sr., 74, died Jan. 7, 2007.

The funeral was at 1 p.m. Jan. 13 at Pee Dee Union Baptist Church. The Rev. Jerry Corbett officiated.

Mr. Buchanan was born in Nov. 25, 1932, a son of the late William and Mamie Buchanan.

In 1943, his parents moved their family to Philadelphia, PA. As a young man he accepted Christ in his life and joined Nazareth Baptist Church, where he was a member and Trustee. He liked to hear his father sing on the male chorus. Soon afterwards he joined the Angelic Choir and the Male Chorus where he served until he joined New Mount Zion Baptist Church. Then he was ordained as a Deacon by his pastor the late Rev. Sewell.

After retirement Jack and his wife, Bessie and children moved back to Cheraw, where he joined Pee Dee Union Baptist Church. He served as a Deacon, Sunday school van driver, member of Hardship Committee and served on the Funeral Committee. In keeping with his singing he joined the Thomas Dawkins Choir and served in numerous other capacities in the church.

Jack worked for the city of
Cheraw as a school crossing guard for about eight years.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Bessie; five sons, Larry, Carl, Samuel, James and Ephriam Jr.; two daughter, Jackqueline and Juanita (Robert); 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Robert and Edward (Dee Dan) Davis; three sisters, Luevina Wingfield (Harold), Althea, and Janie Carey, and other relatives and friends.

Mack Arthur McQueen

PATRICK - Mr. Mack Arthur McQueen, 64, died Jan. 9, 2007.

The funeral was at 2 p.m. Jan. 14 at Wesley United Methodist Church, Cheraw. The Rev. Edward J. Arthur officiated. Burial was held in Foundary Hill Cemetery.

Mr. McQueen was born May 24, 1942, a son of the late Brooks and Eula Mae McQueen.

He attended the public schools in
Chesterfield County. He joined Mt. Mary Baptist Church and later moved to Alexandria, Virginia, where he was employed as a construction worker for many years. Later he returned to Chesterfield County.

Surviving are two sisters, Louretta Blakeney of Alexandria, VA and Juanita (Nathaniel) Cassidy of Cheraw; two brothers, Zeldon McQueen of Alexandria, VA and Walter McQueen of Kentucky; and other relatives and friends.

Mary Wesley Medlin

JEFFERSON - Miss Mary Wesley Medlin, 89, died Jan. 15, 2007.

A funeral was held at 11 a.m. Jan. 17, at First Baptist Church, Pageland. Burial was held in White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was held 6-8 p.m., Jan. 16 at the funeral home.

Miss Medlin was the daughter of the late Wesley Coin and Cora Lee Baker Medlin. She was a graduate of Wingate College and was a retired supervisor with Southern Bell with 40 years of service. Miss Medlin was a member of First Baptist Church of Pageland and the Fidelis Sunday school class.

Preceding her in death by a brother Clyde Medlin, and three sisters, Volee Medlin, Hilda Douglas and Mertis Busick.


Survivors are a sister, Sara (Bernard) Lorence of White Plains, MD and other relatives and friends.

Robert Hill Gandy

CHESTFIELD - Robert Hill Gandy, age 83, died January 16, 2007.

The funeral was at 11 a.m. Jan. 18, 2007 at Zoar United Methodist. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

Mr. Gandy was born in Chesterfield, a son of the late Samuel Evans and Willow White Gandy. He was a graduate of Zoar High School. Mr. Gandy was a former instructor with Chesterfield-Marlboro TEC and retired in 1985 as an instructor with Darlington County School System. He was a United States Army Veteran of WWII, a member of the VFW in Cheraw, and a former Chesterfield Boy Scout leader. Mr. Hill was a member of Zoar United Methodist Church.

Survivors are his wife of 53 years, Katie Chavis Gandy of the home; a son, Michael Gandy (Laura) of Chapin; a daughter, Angela Harpe (Billy) of Florence; two grandchildren, Katie Hope Gandy of Chapin, and Taylor Harpe of Florence; a sister, Gladys Caudle (Charles) of Charlotte, NC; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Sam E. Gandy.

MCBEE - William H. “Dub” Hoffman, 71, died Jan. 19, 2007.

Mr. Hoffman was a son of the late Woodrow W. and Hattie Gainey Hoffman.

Anna Johnson Dixon

PATRICK - Anna Johnson Dixon, 79, died Jan. 22, 2007.

Mrs. Dixon was a daughter of the late Walter and Kathelene Tyner Johnson.

She was the oldest living member of
Edwards Chapel Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Gibson of Patrick; a granddaughter, Bridget Dixon; and three great-grandchildren, Heather Gibson, James Gibson, Tyler Gibson.

Margaret Arledge Jordan

BENNETTSVILLE - Margaret Arledge Jordan, 78, has died.

The funeral was at 3 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene. Burial was held in Sunset Memorial Park.

Mrs. Jordan was the daughter of the late Isaac and Celena Brown Arledge. She was a retired respiratory therapist and LPN with Dundee Manor and Marlboro Park Hospital. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and quilting.

Surviving are a son, David Jorda (Martha) of Florence; daughters, Barbara Beverly (Wilbert) of Summerville, Patsy Hendley (Thad) of Cheraw, Brucie Brigman (Tommy) of Cheraw, Nancy Mumford (Buck), Markie Barrington, and Charity Speight (Doug) all of Bennettsville; a brother, John Arledge of Camden; a sister, Helen Hanson of Camden; 16 grand-children and 11 great-grandchildren.

Vernita Delaine McDonald

CHERAW - Vernita “Dee” Delaine McDonald, 29, died Jan. 16, 2007.

The funeral was at
2 p.m. Jan. 21, at Cheraw Community Center. The Rev. Artemus Woods officiating. Burial was held in Fisher Hill Cemetery.

She was born July 5, 1977, a daughter of Florence and Leroy McDonald.

Dee attended public schools in Cheraw and was an honor graduate at Cheraw High School Class of 1995. She was a graduate of ECPI in Charlotte, N.C., with an Associate's degree in Computer Science. She worked as a Counselor Assistant at Camp Sandhills. She accepted Christ at an early age.

Surviving are her parents; two sisters, Chante (Moses) Walls and Dana (James) Streater of Cheraw; two brothers, Alexander McDonald and Alvin (Priscilla) Sanders both of Cheraw; grandmother, Madeline McDonald of Cheraw; six uncles, Thomas (Bernitha) McDonald of Philadelphia, Penn., Glen McDonald and James McDonald of Cheraw, Wilbert (Carolyn) McMillon of Ft. Washington, Md., Richard (Francia) McMillan of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jack (Alma) McMillan of Newellton, La.; aunts, Louester McDonald and Lizzie Mae Wilson of Cheraw, Joann McDonald and Gwen Hooks; a great-uncle, Pink (Alberta) Patrick Sr. of Cheraw; a great-aunt, Julia Wilson of Hartford, Conn.; and other relatives and friends.

Elsie Burr Campbell

CHESTERFIELD - Elsie Burr Campbell, 94, died Nov. 30, 2006.

A service to celebrate her life was held at Carrabelle Baptist Church. The Revs. Mark Mercer and Gene Hallstorm officiated. Burial was held in Evergreen Cemetery, at Carrabelle, Fla.

She was born Jan. 11, 1912, a daughter of the late Walton I. Burr and Mary E. Teal Burr.

She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School, and Droans Business College of Columbia.

In Chesterfield she worked as secretary-bookkeeper for Teals Department Store, Belk's and First Baptist Church, as a clerk for the Post Office and was working for the Veteran's Administration Office when she and her family moved to Lanark Village, Fla., in 1959.

She was an active member of Chestefield Baptist Church and Carrabelle Baptist Church, and at the time of her death was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church at Lakeland, Fla.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary Elizabeth C. Dowden and husband, Tyrone of Sebring, FL; four grand-children, six great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by her husband, C. Ray Campbell; her brothers, Orie Jennings Burr and Walton I. Burr Jr.; and her sister, Millie B. Burch Tucker.

William Lee Wetzel

 BAMBERG - William Lee Wetzel, 78, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27 at First Baptist Church. Burial followed in the South End Cemetery.

Born in Middletown, Ohio, Mr. Wetzel was a son of the late Marion Lee and Lucy Sample Wetzel. He was employed as a YMCA director in Middletown and Piqua, Ohio, and in Morgantown, W.Va. Mr. Wetzel served on the City Council in Morgantown from 1964-1967. He became active in the mining industry and retired as vice-president of Zapata Coal Corp. Moving to South Carolina, Mr. Wetzel served as Executive Director for Economic Development for Allendale, Hampton and Bamberg counties. He served on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Economic Developers Association for more than 10 years. Mr. Wetzel was an Army veteran of World War II and was a graduate of Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. His hobbies included flying, fishing and amateur radios. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bamberg.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Betty Wetzel of Bamberg; a son, William “Bill” (Becky McKinnon Wetzel) of Pageland; a daughter, Gayle A. (Dennis J. Weaver) of Boise, Idaho; a granddaughter; and a number of other relatives and friends

 

 

He was preceded in death by a sister, Olive Wetzel Canaday.

Wilbur Funches

Wilbur Funches died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007 at Chesterfield General Hospital. Son of the late Cleveland “Clevan” and Mamie Bowman Funches, he was born in Orangeburg on March 8, 1933. He was reared by his grandmother, the late Laura Schuller Bowman. Funeral services were held January 20 at the Morris Funeral Chapel. Burial followed in the Sandhills Cemetery.

A graduate of the New York public schools, Mr. Funches worked as a proof reader and printer at Scott Printing Company. While he enjoyed all sports, baseball was his favorite.

In 1970, Wilbur met Gloria Elizabeth Hughes Perry and was her soul mate until he was called to rest. Other survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Funches of Bloomfield, Conn.; a granddaughter, Michelle (Oneal) Clark; three grandsons, Alphonso Funches, Brian Funches, and Aaron Funches; a great-grand-daughter, Nyasia Joseph; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Robert McArn Bennett

CHERAW - Robert McArn Bennett, 74, died January 19, 2007.

A memorial service for Mr. Bennett was held at
3 p.m. Jan. 21, 2007 at First Presbyterian Church, in Cheraw.

Mr. Bennett was born on
April 13, 1932, a son of the late Russell Evans Bennett and Mary Ella Gandy Bennett. He married Mary Murray “Murphy” Paulling of Darlington, SC and they had three sons- Robert M. Bennett, Jr., D. Paulling Bennett and J. McCauley Bennett.

Mr. Bennett was President of Bennett Motor Company and spent his adult life with Bennett Motor Company. He was a graduate of
Cheraw High School and attended Duke University from 1950-1952. While at Duke University, he was installed in the Kappa Alpha Fraternity in 1951. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1954.

Mr. Bennett was very active in his community for many years. At the First Presbyterian Church he served as Youth Advisor, Sunday School Teacher, Chairman of the Board of Deacons and Clerk of the Session. Also at the Presbyterian Church he was Chairman of the Organ Fund, The Bicentennial and the Endowment Committees. He served on the Executive Committee of the University of South Carolina Gamecock Club, Board of Directors, the USC Alumni Council, the Greater Cheraw Chamber of Commerce Board, the Matheson Memorial Library Board and served as Director and Past President of the Cheraw Country Club. He was also elected to the Board of Trustees at USC in 1980 by the General Assembly of South Carolina. While on the Board he served as Chairman of the Intercollegiate Activities Committee, Chairman of the Medical Affairs Committee, and member of the Executive Committee. He retired from the Board in 1992. Mr. Bennett had been a member of First Citizens Bank local Advisory Board. In 1973 he was elected to the Board of Directors of First Federal Savings and Loan Association in Cheraw and in April 1986 was elected Chairman of the Board.

Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife Ann M. Bennett of Cheraw, SC, three sons, Robert M.(Lindsay D.) Bennett, Jr., grandchild McArn Bennett of Cheraw, SC; D. Paul (Mary S.) Bennett of Cheraw, SC and grandchildren Kristen Sebnick of Florence and Matthew Bennett of Cheraw; J. MaCauley (Leslie W.) Bennett of Columbia, SC, grandchildren Evans Bennett, McCauley Bennett all of Columbia, SC, a brother, Russell E. (Joan) Bennett, Jr. of Rockingham, NC; and other relatives and friends.

Patrecia Burnett

GREENWOOD - Patrecia Martin Burnett (Pat), died.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel, 1425 Montague Ave. Ext., Greenwood. Pat died Monday, January 22, 2007.

Mrs. Burnett was the daughter of the late Duncan Martin and the late Lillian T. Martin. She was a graduate of Columbia College, Columbia, South Carolina, and received a graduate degree from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Franklin Burnett; a daughter, Robyn L. Falquez and grandson, Esteban Falquez of Sierra Vista, Arizona; a son, John K. Burnett and his wife, Kim, and her daughter, Melanie, of Winchester, Virginia; and Patâs sister, Shelby (Tommy) Crawley of Ruby.

Sadie Mae O'Neal Byrd

PATRICK - Mrs. Sadie Mae O'Neal Byrd, age 81, died Jan.16, 2007.

Mrs. Byrd was born a daughter of the late Joseph and Lessie Kelly O'Neal. She was a homemaker and a member of Piney Plains Free Will Baptist Church. Sadie Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Byrd and was also preceded in death by four sons, Billy J., Carl, Hugh, and Robert Byrd and by a special friend Edward Gainey.

Surviving are six sons, Charles Byrd of Virginia Beach, VA, Thomas (Lucille) Byrd of Laurel Hill, NC, Rome Byrd, Dennis (Gertrude) Byrd, and Richard Byrd all of Patrick and Randy Byrd of North Carolina; three daughters, Elizabeth (Jesse) Tyner and Teresa (Rudy) Curry of Patrick and Kathy Byrd of Sumter, a stepson, Edward Gainey, Jr. Pageland, a stepdaughter, Carolyn Sullivan of Georgia two brothers, J.W. Harvey Cash Jr.

CHESTERFIELD - Harvey Cash Jr., 47, died Jan. 11, 2007.

Born in Chesterfield, Mr. Cash was a son of Harvey and Bonnie Hannah Cash Sr.

He was a great husband, father, son and brother. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

RUBY - Mrs. JoAnn George, 58, died Jan. 21, 2007.

Margaret L. “Peggy” Hursey

CHESTERFIELD - Ms. Margaret L. “Peggy” Hursey, 77, died, Jan. 21, 2007.

Funeral services were held at Trinity United Methodist Church in North Myrtle Beach, Jan. 25, 2007, at 10 a.m. Burial followed in Chesterfield, SC, at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Chesterfield Cemetery.

Ms. Peggy, as she was very affectionately called by many, was born on June 16, 1927, a daughter of the late Rudolph J. Hursey, Sr. and Margaret Griggs Hursey.

Ms. Hursey grew up in Chesterfield and graduated from Chesterfield High School. She then graduated from Columbia College, where she was a voice major. Ms. Hursey taught choral music for 10 years in the school systems of Ashburn, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Ms. Hursey moved to North Myrtle Beach in the early 1960s and quickly became an important part of the lives of many in the community as well as the City and her church. As a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, she served in various positions of leadership and shared her love for music as the Choir Director for 26 years.

Ms. Hursey was a member of the Steering Committee for the Consolidation of the City. Ms. Hursey served on numerous committees and was a member of the North Myrtle Beach Planning Commission for 20 years, many of those as the committee's Chairperson. Ms. Hursey's lifelong influence on the City and the entire community was most recently honored by her being chosen as Grand Marshal of the 2006 North Myrtle Beach Christmas Parade.

Ms. Hursey joined the staff of Jordan Realty and became a Realtor in 1964. She was a member of the National Association of Realtors, the South Carolina Association of Realtors, and the Grand Strand Board of Realtors. On the state level, she served as a Secretary and Treasurer of the Association, a Regional Vice President, and as a State Director. She served on various committees as a member or chairperson. Ms. Hursey was honored by the State Association as the South Carolina Realtor of the Year and was given the Distinguished Service Award.

On the local level, Ms. Hursey served as the President, Vice President and Secretary of the Grand Strand Board of Realtors. She also served on the Professional Standards Committee and the Grievance Committee. She was honored by the local Board as the Realtor of the Year and also received the Image Award for Professionalism. Many scholarships honoring Ms. Hursey have been given to the Realtors Educational Foundation.

She was also predeceased by her brother Dr. Rudolph J. “Sonny” Hursey, Jr., and a niece, Mary Margaret “Muffin” Hursey Greene.

Ms. Hursey is survived by nieces Mindy Hursey Littlefield of Landrum, SC, and Laura Hursey Caylor of Greer, SC; great nieces Edie S. Sims of Charlotte, NC, Nichols S. Fletcher of Hopkins, SC, and Hallie G. Littlefield of Charleston, SC; great nephew Wrenn W. Littlefield of Landrum, SC; and special friend Carolyn Hardwick of North Myrtle Beach, SC and other relatives and friends.

Ruth Ratliff Martin

RUBY - Mrs. Ruth Ratliff Martin, age 87, died Jan. 25, 2007.

The funeral was at 3 p.m. Jan. 28, 2007 at White Oak Presbyterian Church. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Martin was born in a daughter of the late James Nathaniel and Lena McNair Ratliff. She was a retired seamstress with Chesterfield Manufacturing and a lifelong member of White Oak Presbyterian Church.

Mary Weaver McLaughlin

ELIZABETHTOWN, N.C. - Mary Weaver McLaughlin, 80, died Jan. 26, 2007.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Jan. 30 at Meadow Brook Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Brust officiating.

Mrs. McLaughlin died on her 80th birthday and what would have been her 59th wedding anniversary.

Surviving are two sons, Scott (Clara) McLaughlin of Raleigh, N.C., and Joe (Vicki) McLaughlin of Bladenboro, N.C.; two daughters, Nancy (John) Lehman and Cathy (Jim) Prevatte of Durham; a sister, Nancy (Ned) Toms of Durham; 10 grandchildren and three great-grand-children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent McLaughlin.

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Georgia Spaulding Rivers, age 55, died Jan. 26, 2007.

Funeral Services were held at 3 p.m. Jan. 29, at Oakland Baptist Church. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Rivers was a daughter of the late George Spaulding and Ruthie Locklear Spaulding Gandy. She was a homemaker, devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. Georgia was a member of Oakland Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Spaulding.

Surviving are her husband, Jack O. “Jackie” Rivers of the home; a son, Kevin Rivers of Chesterfield; a daughter, Missy Rivers of Chesterfield; two grandchildren, Gavin Rivers and Kennleigh Rivers; father, Robert Gandy of Bennettsville; a brother: Chris Gandy of Savannah, GA; a sister, Becky S. Julius Rivers

PAGELAND - Julius Rivers, 83, died Jan. 23, 2007.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at Oro United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Rivers, known as “Pop” to his family, was a son of the late John Rivers and Roxie Sinclair Rivers, and was the widower of Katie Lee Ratliff Rivers. He was educated in the public schools of Chesterfield County. At an early age Mr. Rivers joined Gum Springs Baptist Church and later became a member of Jones Temple Revival Center in Pinehurst, N.C. He was a farmer for a number of years. Mr. Rivers was also employed by Hanson (formerly Kendrick Brick and Tile) of Monroe, N.C. Later he was self-employed until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Lee Ratliff Rivers and a brother and three sisters.

Surviving are five sons, Winford (Goldie) Rivers of Monroe, Curtis (Gina) Rivers, Peter (Shirlean) Rivers and David (Kathy) Rivers, all of Pageland, and Julius (Linda) Rivers Jr. of Marshville; two daughters, Fannie (James) Bracey and Barbara Ann (Roger Newman) Brown of Pageland; a sister, Lonnie (Rivers) Horne of Raleigh, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Frank Roscoe

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Frank Roscoe, age 78, died Jan. 27, 2007.

The funeral was at 3 p.m. Jan. 30, at Bay Springs Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Roscoe was a son of the late Edd and Bessie Campbell Roscoe. He was a retired employee of Chesterfield Webbing. Mr. Roscoe was a member of Bay Springs Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for over 35 years. Frank was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, and gardening.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, I.B. Roscoe and James Roscoe and two sisters, Cora Lee Gainey and Mary Lee Adams.

Calvin Williams

MCCOLL - Calvin Williams, 49, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Jan. 19 at Flemming Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Lonnie Murvin officiating. Burial followed in the Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Pageland.

Mr. Williams was a son of the late Arthur and Willie Mae Williams, Mr. Williams resided at the Tatum-Tysinger CTHII. He attended the Olive Graham Center Sheltered Workshop. Mr. Williams was well-known throughout his community.

Surviving is his aunt, Irene Edgeworth of Pageland; his MCDSN family; his Housmates, Freddie, Willie, and Larry; and his caregivers, cousins and friends.

Clinnis Thomas

Clinnis Thomas age 66 was called home to be with the Lord on January 28, 2007. He was born in Cheraw, S. C. to the late Hamp and Bessie Marshall Thomas. He was a successful entrepreneur for over 12 years where he owned and operated C&C Concrete Finishers in Alexandria, Va.

He is preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Thomas and James C. Thomas.

He leaves behind a loving and devoted wife of 36 years Sheila Douglas-Thomas of Athens, Tn. He was blessed by the Lord with son Randy Thomas and wonderful daughter-in-law Monica of Stafford, Virginia, son Paul Thomas of Detroit, Mi. Two daughters, Shelia Thomas of Birmingham, Mi., and Loretta Ausby and loving son-in-law Willie Ausby of Escondido, California.  He leaves behind the following siblings, two sisters, Virginia Hollis of Hempstead, New York, Mary Byrd and husband Bill of St. Albans, New York.  Three brothers, Preston Thomas of Capital Heights, Maryland, Howard Thomas and wife Roberta and Hamp Thomas of Cheraw, S.C.  Also a very special aunt Billie Joe Cole of Cleburne, Texas mother-in-law Letha Thompson and late father-in-law Paul Thompson of Athens, Tennessee, four brother-in-laws and spouses.  Tommy and Sharon Walker, Ronnie and Connie Walker, Eddie and Stacy Challenger, Billy and Judy Narmore, along with one sister-in-law that he loved like a daughter, Towanna and Danny Shaw. Six beautiful grandchildren, Latte’, Tiara, Akil, Samir, Courtney, Allante’ and a host of nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed while he waits tomeet

us on our journey  into the kingdom of god.

Surviving are three daughters, Rhonda (Craig) Mitchell of Alpharetta, Ga. Ann (John) Butler of Powder Springs, Ga. And Sandra (Danny) McCromack of Barnwell; two sisters, Letha W. Thompson and Juliette W. Douglass of Cheraw; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, A.F. Bill White, Junior White, George White and Claude White; two sisters, Myrtle W. Hewitt and Ollie Rae W. Quick.

Ethel Turnage Thompson, 92, died Wednesday, January 31, 2007. Born in Cheraw, SC she was a daughter of the late William and Hattie McBride Turnage. She enjoyed cooking and gardening.  She was the widow of James T. Thompson, Sr.

Mr. Carl M. Courtney, age 86, dide Tuesday, January 30, 2007.

The funeral service was held Friday February 2, 2007 at High Point Baptist Church.

Mr. Courtney was born in Pageland, SC a son of the late John Henry and Jane Taylor Courtney.  H was a retired employee of Springs Grace Bleachery, and was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. Mr. Courtney was a member and deacon of High Point Baptist Church and was a member of the Smith-Graves American Legion Post 92.

Richard Rudolph Lee, Sr

Judge Richard Rudolph Lee, Sr., age 70, left this earthly life on Friday February 2, 2007 at 10:15 am for a new life in heagen.  He died peacefully at Chesterfield General Hospital surrounded by his loving family after fighting a year long courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Lee was born in Chesterfield, SC on March 7, 1936 and was a son of the late Perdie Ellison and Della Ann Lee.  He was preceded in death by his siblings, Anna Mae Gagne, Bertie Stevens, Lillian Teal, Hubert Tyson Lee, and John Robert Lee.  He was a retired millwright mechanic with Stanley Tools with 26 years of service and was also a retired Summary Court Judge with 20 years of service.

Rudolph was an active member of Westfield Creek Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, treasurer, chair-man of deacons, and on numerous other church committees through the years.

He was a charter member and past president of the BWZ Men’s Brotherhood which began in 1982.  His specialty was cooking his “special” stake and grits when he hosted the men’s meeting.

He was a mason and a member of Cheraw Masonic Lodge 15 since June of 1958, and was a faithful Brother, serving as Master of the Lodge five different times and always working hard to accomplish the many things needed of the lodge.

Mr. Lee was a member of the Cheraw Chapter of The Gideons International and enjoyed helping to distribute God’s Holy Word.

Rudolph truly became a servant of the people of Chesterfield County in March 1985 when he was appointed and sworn in as a Magistrate, and served faithfully until his retirement on November 20, 2006. He was a true people person who enjoyed helping those in need.

He was an avid gardner, and “his tractor was his stress relief.” It gave him great pleasure to share the bounty of his garden with others.

Rudolph’s treasures on earth were his Lord, his family, and his Church. He was a true man of JOY, “Jesus first, others second, yourself third,” and a man of faith whose legacy of love for family and fellow man will endure forever. He will be greatly missed, but we have many wonderful memories of him to sustain us during the days ahead.

Surviving to cherish his memory is the love of his life and soul-mate of 49 years, his loving wife LouRoue Sutton Lee of the home; one son, Richard R. “Ricky” Lee, Jr. and his wife Pam; one daughter, Carol Lee Hall and her husband Ronnie all of Cheraw, SC; 4 grand children; Trey and Courtney Lee, William Skipper, and Rodney Hall and wife Wendy; three great-grand-children Madeline, Samuel, and Chandler Lee Hall; special grandson of choice John Spencer Vaughn, Jr., and wife Jennifer and children Addison and

Colin Vaughn; and great nephew and niece Bobby and Nicole Lee who knew him as “PaPa”.

Funeral services will be 3:00 pm, Monday, February 5, 2007 at Westfield Creek Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

A Masonic Service will be held 5:30 pm, Sunday, February 4, 2007 at the Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel and is open to anyone who would like to attend. Visitation will follow from 6:00-8:00 pm at the funeral home.

She was born April 1, 1908, a daughter of the late Thomas and Nellie Powe Mack. She worked for many years as a seamstress and Home Care Taker.

CHERAW -  Lorraine Denise Hancock Gee, 44, died Feb. 3, 2007.

Mrs. Gee was born Sept. 9, 1962, a daughter of Mardessie Robinson Han-cock and the late McKinley Hancock.

She attended the Chesterfield County Public School system and graduated from Cheraw High School.

Donald Edward “Bo Bo” Eddins

MORVEN, N.C. – Donald Edward “Bo Bo” Eddins. 56. died Feb. 6, 2007.

Graveside Services were held at 3 p.m. Feb. 8, at Anson Memorial Park. The Rev. Doug Anderson and The Rev. Bob Herron officiated. The family greeted friends after the services.

He was born may 18, 1950, a son of the late Edward Clem “E.C.” Eddins and Sudie Elizabeth Wallace Eddins and had worked at the McLaurin Center in Hamlet.

Surviving are his step-father, Frankie; brothers and sisters, Anna Hancock of Ruby, Jean Davis and Jerry Eddins both of Morven and his step-sisters, Cheryl Adams of Morven and Bonnie Polson of Chesterfield and other relatives and friends.

Pauline Horn Griggs

CHERAW – Pauline H. Griggs died January 18, 2007 where she resided at Chesterfield Convalescent Center in Cheraw.

Mrs. Griggs was born in Darlington, the daughter of the late James (Jim) and Daisy Odom Horn. She was the widow of Rev. Wallace Griggs.

Mrs. Griggs spent most of her life as a homemaker and raising her eight children along with two nephews and a niece.  She loved cooking, sewing and flow gardening and passed this on to her children.

Visitation was on Friday, January 19 at  Norton Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 20 at Faith Fellowship Church, Wallace, SC, where Mrs. Griggs was a charter member. Pastor Richard Rainwater (Faith Fellowship Church) and Pastor Doug Anderson (Westfield Creek Baptist Church) officiated. Burial following at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Surviving are her four daughters Shirley G. (Earl) Roberts of Florence, Frances G. (the late Donnie) Foflin of Marshville, NC, Marie (Charles) Roscoe of Cheraw. Four sons Lemuel (Betty) Griggs of Summerville, SC, Tommy (Sherry) Griggs of Corsicana, TX, William (Janice) Griggs of Salt Lake City, James (Sammie) Griggs of Cheraw and one sister, Ala Mae Hewitt of Darlington.  She leaves 27 grand-children, 53 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. McLain was born in Patrick, SC a daughter of the late Charlie Robert Polk, Sr. and Bertice Ingram Polk.  She was a graduate of Cheraw High School and was a retired employee of INA USA. Mrs. McLain was a member of Patrick Baptist Church and Patrick WOW Lodge 1102.  Maggie Lee was Preceded in death by a sister, Emma Jean McLain.

PATRICK – Madeline Wilkins McDonald, 85, died February 3, 2007. The funeral was at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 10, 2007 at Fisher Hill Community Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Johnny McLendon officiated.

Mrs. McDonald, daughter of the late Dollie Funderburk and M. Lewis Wilkins was born on November 18, 1921 in Chesterfield County, SC.

Mrs. McDonald was married to the late Thomas McDonald, Sr.

Preceding her in death included her husband, one son Tyrone McDonald, and two grandchildren: Fred “Duke” Hooks and Vernita “Dee” McDonald, and her seven brothers and sisters.

Omega Miles Grooms

 

JEFFERSON – Mrs. Omega Miles Grooms, 71, died Monday February 12, 2007. Visitations were yesterday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home. The funeral is today at 4:00 p.m. at New Life For Jesus Center in Jefferson.

 

Mrs. Grooms was born in Chesterfield County, SC. She was the daughter of the late John and Lucy Boone Melton. She was a retired employee of Culp Industries.  She was preceded in death by her brothers, Joe, James, Emsley and Manuel Melton; sister Kathleen Gregory; and her two sons, Rev. Jimmy Miles and Edward Miles.

 

Mrs. Grooms is survived by her husband William E. Grooms of the home, her son Timmy Miles of Jefferson, SC., her two daughters: Barbara M. (Freddie) Tarlton and Elaine M. Hampton Winford Dupree

 

CHERAW – Hampton Winford Dupree, 85, died Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at Chesterfield General Hospital in Cheraw, following a brief hospital-ization.

 

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 30 at the George Waldo Long Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cheraw. Burial followed in the Ideal Cemetery in Bennettsville.

 

Son of the late Sallie Dupree, he was born in Marlboro County, South Carolina on September 6, 1921.

 

His professional training was received at St. John’s University and Pace College. Most of his work experience was as an auditor. For many  years, Dupree was employed by the National Council of the YMCA in New York City. He also worked administering programs with War Prisoner’s Aid. From 1975 to 1992 he owned and operated the Hampton House restaurant on Second Street.

 

He is survived by two sisters; Mary D. Talley of Bennettsville, South Carolina and Bernice D. Small of New York, New York; one brother, Silas (Elena) Dupree of Brooklyn, New York; two grandnieces, Cynthia Turner and Claudia Washington; two grand-nephews, Levi (Lucia) Byrd and Wilson Byrd, Jr.; many cousins, special caregivers and a host of other relatives and friends.

CHERAW -  Mr. Stanley Widejko, Jr., age 58, died Sunday, February 18,

2007 at his home. Visitations were from 6:00-8:oo pm Tuesday February 20, 2007, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home in Chesterfield. The funeral service was held at 11: am Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.

 

Mr. Widejko was born in Jersey City, NJ a son of the late Stanley Widejko, Sr. and Ivy Burch Widejko. He was a retired employee of Weller, a division of Cooper Industries, with 25 years of service.  Mr. Widejko was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran, where he served as Sergent of the K-9 44th Infantry Platoon and earned the Bronz Star and Purple Heart. Stanly was a beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

 

Survivors include include his wife of 36 years Anne G. Widejko of the home; 2 daughters: Susan Elizabeth Widejko Edens and her husband Thomas Phillip Edens of Chinquapin, NC and Dr. Cheryl Ivy Widejko and her Fiance Dr. Eron Aldridge of Lexington, KY. A special grandson: Grant Phillip Edens of Chinquapin, NC; 1 brother: Richard Widejko and his wife Sandra of Bennettsville, SC; 2 sisters: Debra W. Hayes and her husband Kevin of Jersey City, NJ and Karen W. Nesbitt and her husband Charles of Chesterfield, SC.

MYRTLE BEACHEdith Elizabeth Chapman, age 79, died Saturday, February 17, 2007, at Conway Medical Center following an illness.

 

Born July 26, 1927 in Conway a daughter of the late Orsa Hayden and Louisa Speer Bashor. She was pre-deceased by her husband, James Chapman; brother: Estel Bashor; and sister: Velma Padgett.

 

Surviving are 4 sons: Gary Chapman and wife, Rachel of Wallace, SC; Jimmie Chapman and wife, Lisa of Socastee, billy Chapman and wife, Cortney of Conway; 3 daughter: Judy Jones and husband Tommie of Conway; Zena Fowler and Joyce Robertson and husband, Charley all of Socastee; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one brother; Edsel Bashor of Murrells Inlet.

 

Funeral Services were held 2:00 pm Tuesday from Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel. Burial followed in Belin United Methodist Church Cemetery.

 

The family received friends from 6-8 pm Monday at the funeral home.

Charlie (Lee Thomas) Lindsey

 

CHESTERFIELDCharlie Lindsey, died on Monday, January 29, 2007. Charlie (Lee Thomas) Lindsey, the son of Neomia Little Lindsey and the late Rufus L. Lindsey, was born September 19, 1951 in Chesterfield County, SC. Charlie confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and fellowshipped with various churches. He attended public schools in Chesterfield County, SC, and was employed with Carolina Packing, Cheraw Dye and Finishing, Chesterfield General Hospital, and JP Stevens all in Cheraw SC, The Winery in Jefferson SC, and Glen manu-facture, of Morven, NC. Charlie later moved to Charlotte, NC where he worked with the city of Charlotte Water Waste Dept. He was also a certified Chef and possessed a passion for grilling. Charlie had an exceptional sense of humor. Once you meet him you would never forget him. Charlie also had the ability to see a person’s strengths and weaknesses.

 

During the last few months of his life Charlie said “I’ve gotten my business straight and I’m waiting on the Lord.” Charlie was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him.

 

He leaves to cherish loving memories: two daughters Crystal Wingate and Trina Douglas both of Cheraw, SC; Four sons, Charles Jr. (Taneisha) Lindsey, Brandon Travis Lindsey, Jonathan Jermaine Lindsey and their mother Brenda Lindsey McAllister all of Charlotte, NC, Trey Shaun Lindsey of Cheraw, SC; seven grandchildren, four brothers, Larry (Vivian) Lindsey of Florence, SC, Johnnie Lindsey of Denver, NC, Tallye Lindsey of Charlotte, NC, and Michael (Shante) Lindsey of Chesterfield, SC; six sisters, Patsy Cobb of Columbia, SC, Gloria (Gary) Johnson of Chesterfield, SC, Martha Reddick of Chesterfield, SC, Gertrude (John) Covington of Clio, SC, Vanessa Marsh of Chesterfield, SC, and Denise (David) Pegues of Cheraw, SC, two great aunts Blanch Flemming and Martha Deviant, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

WALLACE – Doris M. Clark, 72, died Saturday, February 17, 2007 in Cheraw, SC. The funeral services were held at 4:00 PM Monday, February 19, 2007 at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Wallace, SC. The burial was in the church cemetery.

 

Mrs. Clark was born in Wallace, SC she was a daughter of the late Olin Wesley and Lena Bell Quick Driggers.  She was the widow of Murray Clark. She was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, also a son Louie Clark, a daughter Daine Outlaw, and a sister, Elsie Hewitt.

Louie Ronald “Ronnie” Fincher

 

Darlington Louie Ronald “Ronnie” Fincher, 59, of Darlington died Friday, February 16, 2007, A memorial service was held on Monday, February 19, 2007 at 4 pm in the First Church of God conducted by Pastor Norman Mitchell and directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.

 

Mr. Fincher was born in Chesterfield County and was the son of the late Louis Vernon and Doris Hicholson Fincher.  He was a member of the First Church of God where he was very active in the youth ministries, Ronnie also coached church softball and particicipated in the SCAP Football League. Other interests included fishing and golfing, and he was a Club Champion two consecutive years at Tifton Golf Club. Ronnie was the official representative for Santa Clause making sure Santa appeared at local hospitals, nursing homes, and elementary schools.

 

Survivors include his wife, Linda Hoyle Fincher, of the home; two sons, Christopher W. (Rosemary) Hall of Hartsville and Louie Ronald “Ron” Fincher, Jr. of Darlington; a daughter, Felisia (Paul Larrimore, Sr. of Darlington; a brother, Billy Ray Fincher of Chesterfield; and two sisters, Betty Oliver and Sheila Wright, both of Chesterfield; six grandchildren, David Seith Larrimore, Jessica Leigh Larrimore, Paul David Larrimore, Jr., Wendy Lyn Hall, Sydney Nicole Fincher and Amy Joanne Fincher.

Galena Rogers Gainey

 

CERAW – Galena Rogers Gainey went to be with the lord and savior on January 28, 2007. Funeral services were held at Macedonia Baptist Church on Saturday. February 3, 2007 at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Artomus Woods officiating.

 

Galena was born on September 28, 1924 in Chesterfield County. Galena was preceded in death by her hus-band, Randolph Gainey, her parents, Jessie Rogers and Martha Jane Smith, one sister, Lizzie Etta Sellers, and a precious two-year –old granddaughter, Roniqua Burns.

 

Galena had been in declining health for several years and her only daughter, daisy Gainey and Granddaughter Whitney Gainey had devotedly cared for her during this time.

 

Mrs. Gainey is also survived by one son, Ronnie Burns and a third granddaughter, Shawn Alston and a large and loving extended fanily.

 

Mrs. Gainey retired after 17 years of work at Chesterfield County Hospital, and continued to spend the remainder of her life helping others.

 

Mrs. Gainey had been of Macedonia Baptist Church. She loved and served the Lord daily. 

 

Macedonia Baptist Church honored her memory with a special service on February 18, 2007. She had served there as an usher and also with the willing workers choir.

Mr. Gibson was born in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late John C. “Lummie” and Bertha Cleo Kirkley Gibson. He was a retired textile employee and taxi driver. Bate was preceded in death by two brothers, J. Harold Gibson and Ronnie Gibson, and by three sisters, Genora Faile, Brenda Gibson and Clara Gibson.

 

Survivors include a very, very close friend and niece: Carol Ann Curtis of chesterfield. Three brothers: James W. (Sarah) Gibson of Kannapolis, NC, Robert L. (Lib) Gibson of Spartanburg, SC, and John “Jimmy” (Bonnie Jean) Gibson of Chesterfield, SC. Four sisters: Bobbie (Bobby Jule) Gulledge of Concord, NC, Betty (Billy) Sellers of Cheraw, SC and Jean G. Rhynes of Ruby, SC and Gail (Tom) Cassidy of Chesterfield, SC. Also a number of nieces and nephews.

SOCIETY HILL – Mr. Lawson Paul Nolan, 74, died February 18, 2007.

 

Funeral services were held at 3 pm, Tuesday, February 20, 2007, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church in Society Hill, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.  Interment follow-ed in Nolan Cemetery on Society Hill. 

 

The family received friends at Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home from 6 to 8 pm Monday, February 19, 2007 and at all other times at the residence.

 

Mr. Nolan was born in Marlboro County, a son of the late Lonnie and Glennie Leviner Nolan. He attended Welch Neck Baptist Church and was a member of the Hartsville Moose Lodge. Mr. Nolan served his country for eight years in the United State Navy.

 

Surviving are his wife, Jane Carrigan Nolan of Society Hill; his son, William P. (Deborah) Nolan of Society Hill; one daughter, Carolyn Hargrove, of Wall-ace; two brothers, Julian (Peggy) Nolan of Society Hill, and Jasper (Janet) Nolan of Bath, NC; grandchildren, Angela (Stephan) Putnam, and Paula Nola; and Acie Hargrove and Josh English; and one great grandchild, Katherine Ann Putnam.

WALLACE – Jennie Mae Scott Short, died February 10, 2007 at Chesterfield General Hospital. Jennie Short was born on February 1, 1921 in Marlboro County, SC and was the daughter of the late Tony Scott and Emmaline Brown Scott.

 

Very young in life she accepted Christ and Joined Bethel United Methodist Church where she remained a faithful member until her illness. She was the mother of the church.

 

She was married to the late Nathaniel Short and to this union eight children were born.

 

She leaves to cherish her memories, three daughters: Mary Esther Cole (Walter) of Cheraw, SC, Jeanette Coachman of Brooklyn, NY, Wanda L. Short, of Groton, CT; three sons: Nathaniel (Jeanette) Short, Jr., Robert Earl (Lizzie) Short, Sr. both of Wallace, SC and Ernest (Juanita) Short of Cheraw, SC; sister Etta L. Donald Edward “Bo Bo” Eddins

 

MORVIN, NCDonald Edward “Bo Bo” Eddins, 56, died Feb. 6, 2007.

 

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Feb. 8, at Anson Memorial Park. The Rev. Doug Anderson and The Rev. Bob Herron officiated. The family agreeted friends after services.

 

He was born may 18, 1950, a son of the late Edward Clem “E.C.” Eddins and Sudie Elizabeth Wallace Eddins and had worked at the McLaurin Center in Hamlet.

 

Surviving are his mother, Dot Eddins Brock and husband Frankie of the home: brothers and sisters, Anna Hancock of Ruby, Jean Davis and Jerry Eddins both of Laurinburg, NC, Jack Eddins and Linda Dean both of Morven and his step-sisters, Cheryl Adams of Morven and Bonnie Polson of Chester-field and other relatives and friends.

Billy Carson Wallace

 

JEFFERSONMr. Billy Carson Wallace, age 50, died Monday, February 19, 2007. Visitation was from 6-8 pm, yesterday, February 21, 2007 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Home in Chesterfield. The funeral service is today at 2:00 PM at White Plains Baptist Church. The burial will follow after the service at Jefferson Cemetery.

 

Mr. Wallace was born in Cheraw, SC a son of Reva Gibson Berger and the late Wilson Wallace. He was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and had received several degrees in various fields. Billy was presently employed with Martin Marietta Materials, and was a former member of the SC National Guard and was a U.S. Army Veteran. Billy was a member of the Flat Rock Masonic Lodge # 178.

 

Survivors of Mr. Wallace include his wife Joan Kay Jordan Wallace of the home, two sons: Anthony (Angel) Wallace of Kershaw, SC and Gregory Wallace of Chesterfield, SC; one daughter: angela (Brian) Rogers of Jefferson, SC; his mother: Reva Gibson Berger of Chesterfield, SC; one brother: David Wallace of Monroe, NC, and one sister: Shelia Newson of Chesterfield, SC. Also are seven grand-children: Ashla, Gevin, Brittany, Kimberly, Timothy, Nicholas, and Rebecca.

CHESTERFIELDMrs. Sara Jenkins Hilton Smith, age 97, died Tuesday, February 20, 2007.

 

The funeral was at 11:oo a.m. Feb. 22, at Chesterfield Baptist Church, Burial was held at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.

 

The family received friends 10-11 a.m., prior services.

 

Mrs. Smith was born May 4, 1909, to the late William Columbus and Barbara Funderburk Jenkins. She was a resident of Charlotte for 27 years prior to marring the late Francis Marion Smith and moving to Chesterfield, SC, where she lived for 44 years, and was a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church. She moved to Pineville, NC in September 2006.

 

Surviving is a daughter, Maary H. Hoagland (Jim) of Charlotte, NC; a son Richard D. Hilton (Gaye) of Murrells Inlet; grandchildren, J. David Hoagland (Jane) of Charlotte, NC, Beth Hoagland of Greensboro, NC, Laura H. Culler (Will) of Chapin, Richard D. The funeral was at 2 p.m. Feb 14, at Flemming Funeral Home. Burial was held in St. James AME Zion Church Cemetery, Chesterfield.

 

Mr. Bittle was born June 2, 1941, a son of the late Eugene “Bullie” and Allie Lee Bittle.

 

He joined Davidson Grove Baptist Church at an early age and served on the trustee board. And was educated in Chesterfield County public school system.

 

Thurmond retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service. He served two tours during the Vietnam War and received the Air Force Commendation Medal for his meritorious service Oct. 8, 1966 to Sept. 13, 1967.

 

Upon retirement, he received the Disabled American Veteran Citation of Appreciation for his service at the Dorn Veteran Hospital in Columbia, SC.

 

He was preceded in death by a sister Shirley Bittle; two brothers, Lester Bittle and Burise Bittle and a step-daughter, Carolyn Miller-Kempton.

 

Surviving is his wife, Mary Rose Bittle of Chesterfield; a daughter, Dana Messinberg of Charlotte, NC; a son Demetrius (Cheryl) Bittle of

Willingboro, NJ; sox stepdaughters, Lonnette (Freddie) Cox of Brooklyn, NY, Patricia Miller of Huntersville, NC, Mary (Samuel) Barringer of Charlotte, NC, Sadie Denise Miller of Chesterfield, Earlene Miller of Concord, NC and Charlene Miller of Lansing, MI; four step-sons, Lonnie Miller of Cheraw, Eldred (Annette) Miller of Huntersville, NC, Larry Miller of Charlotte, NC and Dennis Bernard (Cassandra) Miller of Fort Mill; three sisters, Brenda Bittle Kennedy of Charlotte, NC, Doris Cummings of Columbia and Sandra (JC) McQueen of Fayetteville, NC; four brothers, Ralph (Ella) Bittle and Burnice (Margie) Bittle both of Charlotte, NC, David Bittle and Kenneth (Camalah) Bittle both of Cheraw; and other relatives and friends. Mr. Ivory “Bubba” Moore, Jr. 76, died Feb. 18, 2007.

 

The funeral was at 1 p.m. Feb. 24 at White Creek Baptist Church, Wallace. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

 

Mr. Moore was born April 21, 1930, to the late Ivory Sr. and Florence Jackson Moore.

 

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ella Mae Howard.
