Brenda Rose Anderson

BETHUNE - Brenda Rose Anderson, 63, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, at her home.

A graveside funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23 in New Silverbrook Cemetery, Anderson.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kershaw County, 2001 W. Dekalb St., Camden, S.C. 29020.

A daughter of Sara Burdette Helms and the late Buford Walker, Mrs. Anderson had retired from Mar-Mac Manufacturing Company.

Surviving are her husband, Claude Richard Anderson Jr. of the home; three children, Rose Ann (Greg) Smith of Westminister, Jenny (Edmond) Rawls of Columbia, and Chuckie (Joie) Baxley of Bethune; a stepson, Ricky (Sammy) Anderson of Hartsville; a stepdaughter, Christie (Ricky) Williamson of McBee; a sister, Sandra (Donald) McClellan of Anderson; and five grandchildren, Adam Smith, Alexander Rawls, Drake Baxley, Jessica Williamson and Rick Anderson.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Roger “Bo” Walker.

Andrew B. Atkinson

HARTSVILLE - Andrew B. “Bobo” Atkinson, 63, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005.

A funeral service was held at
4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006 from Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ron Smalley and Bobby Steen officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens.
 
Born in Hartsville, Mr. Atkinson was a son of the late Andrew and Connie Mae Petty Atkinson.

Surviving are a son, Budgey Atkinson of Hartsville; five sisters, Darla Jean Freeman and Carolyn Mixon of Hartsville, Lois Gainey of Society Hill, Mary Bewer of Rockingham, N.C., and Connie Rodriguez of Conway; brothers, Roger Atkinson, Jimmy Atkinson, Frank Atkinson, Jack Atkinson and Tex Atkinson of Hartsville, and Scott Atkinson of Pendleton.

Alease Burr-Beatty

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Alease Burr-Beatty died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005.

A funeral service was held at
2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, 2006 from Woodland Presbyterian Church with Dr. Larry Hill officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Surviving are a brother, Curtis (Myrtle) Burr of Alexandra, Va.; a sister-in-law,

 

Marie Burr of Chesterfield; caregiver and cousin, Phyllis Castle; an aunt-in-law, Verline Morrison of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret Grant Cagle

CHERAW - Margaret Grant Cagle, 86, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 2, from Cash Baptist Church with the Rev. Marty Watkins officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Wayne Dean, Ralph Grant, Mitch Dean, Tommy English, Jimmy White, Johnny White, Terry Chapman and Brad Chapman.

Memorials may be made to Cash Baptist Church Building Fund, 3938 Hwy. 52, Cheraw, S.C. 29520.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mrs. Cagle was a daughter of the late Zechariah and Catherine Grant of the Teals Mill Community. She graduated from Cheraw High School, and after marrying the late Deber Cagle of Asheboro, N.C., on Dec. 25, 1941, they lived in Wilmington, N.C., Norfolk, Va., Asheboro, N.C., and Rock Hill. In 1966, they moved to a 25-acre farm near Teals Mill where they lived until Mr. Cagle's passing in April 1996.

Mrs. Cagle was a devout Christian and a faithful member of Cash Baptist Church prior to her illness; she loved singing in the choir.

 

 

Surviving are two children, Doris Cagle Helms of Cheraw, and Edward “Ed” F. (Claire) Cagle of Florence; three grandsons, Chris Cagle of Dripping Springs, Texas, Mark Helms of Rock Hill, and Eric Helms of Simpsonville.

She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Ed Helms; two brothers, Tildon Grant and Griffin Grant; and four sisters, Leona Grant Robeson, Mattie Grant Naylor, Marie Grant Kirkley and Ethel Grant Outen.

 Geneva Burch Clark

PAGELAND - Geneva Burch Clark, 71, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31 from Oro United Methodist Church with the Rev. Willie Dicks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield, Mrs. Clark was a daughter of the late Henry W. and Josephine Blakeney Burch and was a widow of Ulysses Clark. She had worked as a seamstress.

Surviving are a daughter, Latricia Clark (Larry) Jackson of Pageland; four brothers, Leroy (Johnnie) Burch, Otis (Clara) Burch, Francis (Etta) Burch and William (Mae Ruth) Burch of Pageland; and two grandsons, Damon Jimal Funderburk and Devin Jiwan Funder-burk of Pageland.

Lizzie Kate Gilbert Davis

 MCBEE - Lizzie Kate Gilbert Davis, 75, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005.

A graveside funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30 in Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Bishop Clifton Barfield Jr. officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 981 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, S.C. 29550.
 
Born in
Darlington County, Mrs. Davis was a daughter of the late William Rawton and Cora Northcutt Gilbert. She was the widow of John H. Davis and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mrs. Davis retired from A.O. Smith Water Products Company as executive secretary. She was a graduate of Hartsville High School and attended Oklahoma State University.

Surviving are a son, Larry M. (DeNeen) Gilbert of Hartsville; a daughter, Brenda K. (Chris) Bryant of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Grettie Parrott of Hartsville, and Ethelyn (George) Locklair of Summerville; four sisters-in-law, Helen Gilbert of Hartsville, Sue Davis of Nathalie, Va., Margaret Phillips of Brookneal, Va., and Frances Lipscomb of Lynchburg, Va.; four grandchildren, April Melissa Gilbert and Amie Gilbert of Hartsville, Kathryn Bryant of Columbus, Ga., and Dr. Yvonne Corcoran of Albuquerque, N.M.; and a step-grandchild, Morgan Inman of Hartsville.

She was preceded in death by two sons, William Wayne and Mark Leon Gilbert.

John M. Dixon

HARTSVILLE - John M. Dixon, 85, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3 from First Southern Methodist Church with the Revs. Ronnie Caulder and Larry Sprague officiating. Burial followed in Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Lakeview Blvd., Hartsville, SC 29550; or Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church, Cheraw, S.C. 29520.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Dixon was a son of the late Burl and Emma Dixon Dixon and was the widower of Clemmie Nicholson Dixon. He was a member of First Southern Methodist Church and also attended Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Dixon served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the McBee Masonic Lodge. He was a farmer and a gardener.

Surviving are a son, Anthony (Susan) Dixon of Fuquay Varina, N.C.; two daughters, Patricia (Paul) Guest and Wanda (Claude) Stroud of Hartsville; two sisters, Geneva Gainey of Kannapolis, N.C., and Edelle Melton of Cheraw; five grandchildren, Gina Zeigler, Tanya Severt, Rhett Stroud, Keri Davis and Jennifer Coker; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Clanie Brazzel ‘C.B.' Edwards

HARTSVILLE - Clanie Brazzel “C.B.” Edwards Jr., 75, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30 from First Baptist Church Chapel. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 181 E. Evans St., Florence, S.C. 29506.

Born in Hartsville, Mr. Edwards was a son of the late Clanie B. Edwards Sr. and Emma Agnes Watford Edwards. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, and Hartsville Masonic Lodge 173.

Surviving are a daughter, Brenda B. Pugh of
Columbia; two sons, Clanie E. Brown of Fort Mill, and David R. Brown of Cheraw; a brother, Bobby M. Edwards of Brownsville; four grandchildren, Kyle Pugh, Julie Brown, Katherine Brown and Caitlin Brown; and a special friend, Sadie Bruton.

Ralph Friday Sr.

CHERAW - The Rev. Ralph Friday Sr., 55, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005 at Carolina Pines after a brief illness.

A funeral service was held at
3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 1 from Crossroads Baptist Church. Burial followed in Piney Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Friday was a son of Bernice Zimmerman Friday and the late Caston Friday. He graduated from Long High School in 1968, and received an associate's in divinity from the Morris College School of Religion in Sumter. He was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and sang with the Hosannah Gospel Singers. Later, Mr. Friday served as associate minister under the leadership of the Rev. Wilson Kennedy. Mr. Friday served as pastor of the St. Paul and Galilee Baptist churches for several years. He was employed with Evans Correctional Institution until his retirement. Mr. Friday was pastor of Crossroads Baptist Church for nearly 18 years until his death and also served as vice-moderator of the Union Bright Light Missionary Baptist Association.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Addison Friday; four children, Ralph Friday Jr., Rosezette Michelle, Richard Anthony and Wanda Denise; his father-in-law, George Addison; his mother-in-law, Lucinda W. Addison; a brother, Roy Friday of Bowie, Mary.; four sisters, Rosa Mae (Jerry) Oree of Columbia, Danzee Lee (Tommy) Porter of Florence, Debra Moore of Patrick, and Margaret (Don) Huskey of Atlanta, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, the Rev. Caston Friday Jr. and Terrance McNeil.

Chalmers Luke Godwin Jr.

WINNSBORO - Chalmers Luke Godwin Jr., 81, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005.


A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31 from First Baptist Church of Winnsboro conducted by the Rev. Mark Chapman. Burial followed in the church cemetery on Hudson Street Extension.

First Baptist Church in Winnsboro; the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605-4277; or a charity of one's choice.

Born in Summerton, Mr. Godwin was a son of the late Chalmers Luke Sr. and Anna Snow Huggins Godwin. He graduated from Summerton High School and was a 1953 graduate of Clemson College. Mr. Godwin taught Vocational Agriculture at Branchville High School. Later he became sales manager of Horne Motors, after which he became part owner of McLaughlin Ford in Sumter. From Sumter, Mr. Godwin moved his family to Winnsboro where he owned and operated Godwin Ford. After his career in the automotive industry, Mr. Godwin worked in the South Carolina Senate Agriculture Research Committee under Sen. Ed Garrison.

Mr. Godwin served in World War II in the United States Army and received the EAMET Campaign Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the Victory Medal. He served with the 5th Army in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. Mr. Godwin was a member of American Legion Post 11, the York Rite, the Jamil Shrine Temple, the Winnsboro Masonic Lodge 11, and First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Nolte Godwin of the home; three sons, Franklin M. “Frank” (Brenda) Godwin of Santee, Chalmers Edward “Ed” (Marcia) Godwin of Irmo, and Jon Luke (Debbie) Godwin of Blythewood; two brothers, Dr. Winston Y. Godwin of Cheraw, and Joharie L. Godwin of Summerton; two sisters, Mrs. E.T. (Margie) Chandler of Olanta, and Mrs. P.D. (Sybil) Quillin of Virginia Beach, Va.; and five grandchildren, James Luke Godwin, Ashley Jean Godwin, Allison Denise Godwin, Kevin White Godwin and Christina Ann Godwin.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Louise Godwin and Willa Jean Davis.

Joharie L. Godwin

SUMMERTON - Joharie L. Godwin, 74, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2006 at his home.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 in Grove Hill Cemetery in Darlington with the Rev. Garland S. Hart officiating.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Hall Academy, 1315 S. Dukes St., Summerton, S.C. 29148; or Laurence Manning Academy, Manning, S.C.

Born in Summerton, Mr. Godwin was a son of the late Chalmers Luke and Anna Snow Huggins Godwin. He graduated from Summerton High School and Clemson A&M (now University) in 1953. Mr. Godwin was a Captain in the United States Army. He was owner of Godwin Tractor of Summerton for many years, serving a large region of South Carolina. Mr. Godwin was a deacon at Summerton Baptist Church, where he also served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a Mason as well as a member of the Summerton Lions Club.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Stone Godwin of the home; two sons Joharie “Joey” L. (Sheree) Godwin of Summerton, and Jim (
Shannon) Godwin of Darlington; a daughter, Joanna (Tony) Hall of Florence; six grandchildren, Lauren Godwin (a senior at USC), Brittany and Joharie “J.”L. Godwin III, Merritt Hall, Anna-Leigh Hall and Peyton Godwin; a brother, Dr. Winston Y. Godwin of Cheraw; and two sisters, Mrs. E.T. (Margie) Chandler of Olanta, and Mrs. P.D. (Sybil) Quillin of Virginia Beach, Va.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Chalmers L. Godwin Jr.; and two sisters, Anna Louise Godwin and Willa Jean Davis.

Victoria Teal Higgins

BEAUFORT - Victoria Teal Higgins, 10, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005 in McLeod Medical Center in Florence.

A prayer service was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22. A mass of Christian burial was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 23 from St. Peter's Catholic Church. Burial followed in Beaufort Memorial Gardens.

Born in Beaufort, Miss Higgins was a daughter of Elizabeth “Beth” Teal Higgins and Patrick Higgins. She was a fourth grader at
Mossy Oaks Elementary School.

Surviving are her parents of Beaufort; a brother, Nicholas Higgins of Beaufort; a sister, Emily Higgins of Beaufort; her maternal grandmother, Patricia Teal of Cheraw; and her paternal grandparents, Martin and Joan Scheck Higgins of Beaufort.

Mary Anna Hinson

CHESTERFIELD - Mary Anna Hinson, 76, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005 at Cheraw Healthcare after an illness.

A funeral service was held at
3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28 from the Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith with Elder Joe C. Tisdale officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Anson County, N.C., Mrs. Hinson was a daughter of the late Joe Perrin and Roseanna Lindsey. She attended the public schools of Anson County. Mrs. Hinson was a devoted and loving mother who loved to sew and crochet. She often sewed for others. Mrs. Hinson was a domestic worker for over 40 years. She attended Chesterfield Church.

Surviving are her husband, Weldon Hinson of the home; two sons, James Lee Hinson of Cheraw, and Weldon Hinson Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; Danny Lee Hinson, whom she raised as a son; four brothers, Eugene Perrin of Albany, N.Y., John Perrin of Charlotte, N.C., and Haywood Lee Perrin and Willie Bruce Perrin of Greensboro, N.C.; four sisters, Betty (John) Little and Bernice Henderson of Greensboro, Mamie Lee Ketter of Bronx, N.Y., and Lugene of Norman, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Howell (Clara) Hinson of Baltimore, Mary.; a sister-in-law, Velderah of Baltimore; an aunt, Annie Bell Marshall of Greensboro; 13 grandchildren, Alonzo, Martrail, Syretta, Mertice, Kahaliah Nicole, Muhammad Jamal, Kareem Elijah, Jasmine Nichole, Ruby Lee, Shelly, Danny Leroy, Lorraine and Lonnie Lester; nine great-grand-children; and a number of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Hinson.

Margaret Elizabeth Threatt ‘Bess' Hoffman

HARTSVILLE - Margaret Elizabeth Threatt “Bess” Hoffman, 101, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27 from Middendorf Baptist Church with the Revs. Don Rhyne and Ed Griggs officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Lancaster, Mrs. Hoffman was a daughter of the late Oscar and Lucy Mahaffey Threatt. She was a member of Middendorf Baptist Church, was a member of the W.M.U. and taught Sunday School. Mrs. Hoffman taught school for many years in North and South Carolina. She was honored by the South Carolina Legislature on her 100th birthday with a certificate of appreciation for her dedication to her family, community and state.

Surviving are her husband, Ebbie Hoffman of Hartsville; three sisters, Julia T. Lyman of Columbia, Gertrude T. Potts of Florence, and Sarah T. Haynes of Moreland, Ga.

William ‘Bill' Thornwell Hunter Sr.

Cheraw - William “Bill” Thornwell Hunter Sr., 71, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005.

1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 from Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Born in Cheraw, Mr. Hunter was a son of the late Julius Thornwell and Myrtis Therrell Hunter. He was a retired construction worker.

Surviving are a son, William T. Hunter Jr. of Wake County, N.C.; a sister, Mary Hunter (Wade) Freeman of Knightsdale, N.C.; two brothers, Jimmy R. (Gerald) Hunter of Knights-dale, and Jackie (Joan) Hunter of Raleigh, N.C.; and a number other relatives and friends.

Lillian Creola G. Ivey

HARTSVILLE - Lillian Creola G. Ivey, 93, died Dec. 30, 2005.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mrs. Ivey was a daughter of the late William Shelton and Lou Weatherford Gainey.

Surviving are four children, Hubert Gainey, Doris Robinson, Janie Lizardi and Betty Hodge; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

John Wayne Outlaw

WALLACE - John Wayne Outlaw, 64, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2005 at his home.

A funeral service was held at
3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30 from Emanuel Holiness Church.

Born in Cheraw, Mr. Outlaw was a son of the late John Preston and Dorothy Hatcher Outlaw. He was a painter and talented musician. Mr. Outlaw attended
Wallace Emanuel Holiness Church.

Surviving are two sons, Steve Outlaw and Gary Outlaw of
High Point, N.C.; a brother, J.T. Outlaw of Wallace; and a sister, Louise Quick of Wallace.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Pearly Ellen Boone.

Ernest Robinson

HAMLET, N.C. - Ernest Robinson, 79, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005 at his home.

A funeral service was held at
1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28 from Church of God of Prophecy at Ghio with the Revs. Ellis Autry, Randall Snead and Samuel Watkins officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Marlboro County, Mr. Robinson was a son of James and Rose Paul Robinson, and was a widower of Lara English Robinson. He was a mechanic and worked for Buttercup and John Deere Implements. Mr. Robinson was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy at Ghio.

Surviving are five daughters, Nellie Thompson, Margaret Jeffrey and Janice Cottingham of Hamlet, Sarah Leviner of Cheraw, and Ethel Faye Robinson of Fayetteville, N.C.; five sons, Ernest James Robinson, Curtis Robinson, Grady Wayne Robinson and Stevie Lynn Robinson of Hamlet, and Keith Allen Robinson of Bennettsville; two brothers, Hubert Robinson and James W. “Yankie” Robinson of Bennettsville; three sisters, Bertha Mae Knight of McColl, Rosa Anderson of Laurinburg, N.C., and Lucille Robinson of Laurel Hill, N.C.; 23 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Robson.

MULLINS - Edith Mayers Rogers, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005 at her home after a brief illness.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27 the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Kirkland officiating. Burial followed in Mayers Memorial Park.

Born in Marion County, Mrs. Rogers was a daughter of the late E. Cleve and Mollie Drew Mayers, and was the widow of Elton C. Rogers. She retired from Anvil Knitwear after more than 40 years of service. Mrs. Rogers was a member of Mullins First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Crusaders Sunday School Class.

Surviving are a son, Clyde H. (Dianne) Rogers of Cheraw; a daughter, Jennie (Jim) Elliott of Mullins; four grand-children; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gladys Long of Barnwell, and Catherine Morris of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Cleve Mayers Jr., and three sisters, Ann Bray, Inez Gass and Betty Rogers.

George Andrew Rowie

CHERAW - George Andrew Rowie, 91, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30 from Grooms Funeral Home with Dr. Johnnie Frank McClendon officiating. Burial followed in Foundry Hill Cemetery.

Born in Marlboro County, Mr. Rowie was a son of the late Andrew and Dinah Rowie. He was educated in Chesterfield County and worked at several different jobs. Mr. Rowie was a member of Mt. Hebron AME Zion Church and was a loving, caring family person.

Surviving are a son, Robert (Mildred) Rowie of Cheraw; four grandsons, Robert Rowie of Matthews, N.C., Michael (Zelda) Rowie of Crowley, La., Gerald (Dazeree) Rowie of Charlotte, N.C., and Chris (Bernadette) Rowie of Cheraw; six great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; two children, George “Monk” Jr. and Elizabeth; seven siblings; and a grandchild, Roberta.

Sara Louise Thomas Stanton

FLORENCE - Sara Louise Thomas Stanton, 87, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005 in a Florence hospital after an illness.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30 from Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Burial followed in Florence National Cemetery.

Born in Cheraw, Mrs. Stanton was a daughter of the late Malcolm Chastine and Ida Stogner Thomas. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, an avid member of the Women's Golf Association at Florence County Club and the Women's Golf Association at the Country Club of South Carolina. Mrs. Stanton was formerly employed as a bookkeeper.

Surviving are her husband, Dr. Thomas Cousar Stanton of Florence; two children, Sara Kate Stanton Monk of Florence, and Thomas Cousar (Robin) Stanton Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio; three grandchildren, Emily Sara Monk of Florence, and Mary Kate Stanton and Michael Thomas Stanton of Cleveland, Ohio.

Blakney Sampson Steele

MORVEN, N.C. - Blakney Steele, 83, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005 in Anson Community Hospital.

Born in Anson County, N.C., Mr. Steele was a son of the late Mary Baker and Jule Steele. He was a retired correctional officer with the North Carolina Division of Prisons.

Surviving are his wife, Melba Hancock Steele of the home; two sons, Ronnie Steele of Harrisburg, N.C., and Randy Steele of Morven; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother and sisters, B.J. Steele of Chesterfield, and Julia Beck and Ruby Texler of Wadesboro, N.C.

Thomas Edward Sweatt Sr.

MCBEE - Thomas Edward Sweatt Sr., 73, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005.
A funeral service was held at
3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29 from McBee United Methodist Church with the Revs. Roger Dodds, David Myers and Thomas Crouch officiating. Burial followed in Sweatt Family Cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Sweatt was a son of the late Wilton Lee and Pearl Kirkley Sweatt. He was a member of McBee United Methodist Church and the American Legion. He retired from DuPont after 35 years of service. Mr. Sweatt was in the United States Navy serving on the submarine U.S.S. Douglas H. Fox.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Dixon Sweatt of McBee; a son, Thomas E. (Barbara) Sweatt Jr. of Hartsville; a daughter, Dianne S. (Frank) Plyler of McBee; and a granddaughter, Nicole P. (Scott) Fisk of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Sweatt Melton.

Frank James Wilkes

PATRICK - Frank James Wilkes, 76, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31 from Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Wilkes was a son of the late Clara Wilkes and Pormel Harper. He joined Piney Grove Baptist Church at an early age and later joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Mr. Wilkes served there as a Deacon since 1941 and later became

chairman of the board. He was employed for many years at the Sash, Door and Lumber Company and later worked for Cheraw Dyeing and Finishing Company, from which he retired. Mr. Wilkes was president of the Truelight Gospel Singers, served in the community as part of the Patrick Jaycees and was president of the Singing Convention for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Dora A. Wilkes; three sons, James (Marie) Wilkes, Herbert (Joeann) Wilkes and Sgt. (Ret.) Leopold (Bonnie) Wilkes; three daughters, Mary, Willie Mae and Barbara; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; an aunt, Bertha Scurry of Wilmington, Del.; an adopted sister, Katherine McKenzie; three sisters-in-law, Daisy Larry, Betty Jackson, and Floretha McFarlan; a brother-in-law, Ernest McFarlan; and a number of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a sister and two sons.

Born in Ruby, Mr. Wilkerson was a son of the late Arthur L. Wilkerson and

 

Lucy Oliver Wilkerson. He was a graduate of Ruby High School, and was employed with Southern Tank Transport in Dispatch. Mr. Wilkerson was formerly employed the A&P Tea Co. in Columbia and Holly Hill. He was an avid NASCAR fan and loved the outdoors.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline Barfield Wilkerson of the home; a daughter, Donna Wilkerson of Vance; and a sister, Brenda W. (Bert) Forsythe of Harrisburg, N.C.
