Brenda Rose Anderson

BETHUNE - Brenda Rose Anderson, 63, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, at her home.

A graveside funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23 in New Silverbrook Cemetery, Anderson.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kershaw County, 2001 W. Dekalb St., Camden, S.C. 29020.

A daughter of Sara Burdette Helms and the late Buford Walker, Mrs. Anderson had retired from Mar-Mac Manufacturing Company.

Surviving are her husband, Claude Richard Anderson Jr. of the home; three children, Rose Ann (Greg) Smith of Westminister, Jenny (Edmond) Rawls of Columbia, and Chuckie (Joie) Baxley of Bethune; a stepson, Ricky (Sammy) Anderson of Hartsville; a stepdaughter, Christie (Ricky) Williamson of McBee; a sister, Sandra (Donald) McClellan of Anderson; and five grandchildren, Adam Smith, Alexander Rawls, Drake Baxley, Jessica Williamson and Rick Anderson.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Roger “Bo” Walker.

Andrew B. Atkinson

HARTSVILLE - Andrew B. “Bobo” Atkinson, 63, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005.

A funeral service was held at
4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006 from Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ron Smalley and Bobby Steen officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens.
 
Born in Hartsville, Mr. Atkinson was a son of the late Andrew and Connie Mae Petty Atkinson.

Surviving are a son, Budgey Atkinson of Hartsville; five sisters, Darla Jean Freeman and Carolyn Mixon of Hartsville, Lois Gainey of Society Hill, Mary Bewer of Rockingham, N.C., and Connie Rodriguez of Conway; brothers, Roger Atkinson, Jimmy Atkinson, Frank Atkinson, Jack Atkinson and Tex Atkinson of Hartsville, and Scott Atkinson of Pendleton.

Alease Burr-Beatty

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Alease Burr-Beatty died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005.

A funeral service was held at
2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, 2006 from Woodland Presbyterian Church with Dr. Larry Hill officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Surviving are a brother, Curtis (Myrtle) Burr of Alexandra, Va.; a sister-in-law,

 

Marie Burr of Chesterfield; caregiver and cousin, Phyllis Castle; an aunt-in-law, Verline Morrison of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret Grant Cagle

CHERAW - Margaret Grant Cagle, 86, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 2, from Cash Baptist Church with the Rev. Marty Watkins officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Wayne Dean, Ralph Grant, Mitch Dean, Tommy English, Jimmy White, Johnny White, Terry Chapman and Brad Chapman.

Memorials may be made to Cash Baptist Church Building Fund, 3938 Hwy. 52, Cheraw, S.C. 29520.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mrs. Cagle was a daughter of the late Zechariah and Catherine Grant of the Teals Mill Community. She graduated from Cheraw High School, and after marrying the late Deber Cagle of Asheboro, N.C., on Dec. 25, 1941, they lived in Wilmington, N.C., Norfolk, Va., Asheboro, N.C., and Rock Hill. In 1966, they moved to a 25-acre farm near Teals Mill where they lived until Mr. Cagle's passing in April 1996.

Mrs. Cagle was a devout Christian and a faithful member of Cash Baptist Church prior to her illness; she loved singing in the choir.

 

 

Surviving are two children, Doris Cagle Helms of Cheraw, and Edward “Ed” F. (Claire) Cagle of Florence; three grandsons, Chris Cagle of Dripping Springs, Texas, Mark Helms of Rock Hill, and Eric Helms of Simpsonville.

She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Ed Helms; two brothers, Tildon Grant and Griffin Grant; and four sisters, Leona Grant Robeson, Mattie Grant Naylor, Marie Grant Kirkley and Ethel Grant Outen.

 Geneva Burch Clark

PAGELAND - Geneva Burch Clark, 71, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31 from Oro United Methodist Church with the Rev. Willie Dicks officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield, Mrs. Clark was a daughter of the late Henry W. and Josephine Blakeney Burch and was a widow of Ulysses Clark. She had worked as a seamstress.

Surviving are a daughter, Latricia Clark (Larry) Jackson of Pageland; four brothers, Leroy (Johnnie) Burch, Otis (Clara) Burch, Francis (Etta) Burch and William (Mae Ruth) Burch of Pageland; and two grandsons, Damon Jimal Funderburk and Devin Jiwan Funder-burk of Pageland.

Lizzie Kate Gilbert Davis

 MCBEE - Lizzie Kate Gilbert Davis, 75, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005.

A graveside funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30 in Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Bishop Clifton Barfield Jr. officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 981 W. Carolina Ave., Hartsville, S.C. 29550.
 
Born in
Darlington County, Mrs. Davis was a daughter of the late William Rawton and Cora Northcutt Gilbert. She was the widow of John H. Davis and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mrs. Davis retired from A.O. Smith Water Products Company as executive secretary. She was a graduate of Hartsville High School and attended Oklahoma State University.

Surviving are a son, Larry M. (DeNeen) Gilbert of Hartsville; a daughter, Brenda K. (Chris) Bryant of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Grettie Parrott of Hartsville, and Ethelyn (George) Locklair of Summerville; four sisters-in-law, Helen Gilbert of Hartsville, Sue Davis of Nathalie, Va., Margaret Phillips of Brookneal, Va., and Frances Lipscomb of Lynchburg, Va.; four grandchildren, April Melissa Gilbert and Amie Gilbert of Hartsville, Kathryn Bryant of Columbus, Ga., and Dr. Yvonne Corcoran of Albuquerque, N.M.; and a step-grandchild, Morgan Inman of Hartsville.

She was preceded in death by two sons, William Wayne and Mark Leon Gilbert.

John M. Dixon

HARTSVILLE - John M. Dixon, 85, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3 from First Southern Methodist Church with the Revs. Ronnie Caulder and Larry Sprague officiating. Burial followed in Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Dixon was a son of the late Burl and Emma Dixon Dixon and was the widower of Clemmie Nicholson Dixon. He was a member of First Southern Methodist Church and also attended Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Dixon served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the McBee Masonic Lodge. He was a farmer and a gardener.

Surviving are a son, Anthony (Susan) Dixon of Fuquay Varina, N.C.; two daughters, Patricia (Paul) Guest and Wanda (Claude) Stroud of Hartsville; two sisters, Geneva Gainey of Kannapolis, N.C., and Edelle Melton of Cheraw; five grandchildren, Gina Zeigler, Tanya Severt, Rhett Stroud, Keri Davis and Jennifer Coker; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Clanie Brazzel ‘C.B.' Edwards

HARTSVILLE - Clanie Brazzel “C.B.” Edwards Jr., 75, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30 from First Baptist Church Chapel. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 181 E. Evans St., Florence, S.C. 29506.

Born in Hartsville, Mr. Edwards was a son of the late Clanie B. Edwards Sr. and Emma Agnes Watford Edwards. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, and Hartsville Masonic Lodge 173.

Surviving are a daughter, Brenda B. Pugh of
Columbia; two sons, Clanie E. Brown of Fort Mill, and David R. Brown of Cheraw; a brother, Bobby M. Edwards of Brownsville; four grandchildren, Kyle Pugh, Julie Brown, Katherine Brown and Caitlin Brown; and a special friend, Sadie Bruton.

Ralph Friday Sr.

CHERAW - The Rev. Ralph Friday Sr., 55, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005 at Carolina Pines after a brief illness.

A funeral service was held at
3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 1 from Crossroads Baptist Church. Burial followed in Piney Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Friday was a son of Bernice Zimmerman Friday and the late Caston Friday. He graduated from Long High School in 1968, and received an associate's in divinity from the Morris College School of Religion in Sumter. He was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and sang with the Hosannah Gospel Singers. Later, Mr. Friday served as associate minister under the leadership of the Rev. Wilson Kennedy. Mr. Friday served as pastor of the St. Paul and Galilee Baptist churches for several years. He was employed with Evans Correctional Institution until his retirement. Mr. Friday was pastor of Crossroads Baptist Church for nearly 18 years until his death and also served as vice-moderator of the Union Bright Light Missionary Baptist Association.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Addison Friday; four children, Ralph Friday Jr., Rosezette Michelle, Richard Anthony and Wanda Denise; his father-in-law, George Addison; his mother-in-law, Lucinda W. Addison; a brother, Roy Friday of Bowie, Mary.; four sisters, Rosa Mae (Jerry) Oree of Columbia, Danzee Lee (Tommy) Porter of Florence, Debra Moore of Patrick, and Margaret (Don) Huskey of Atlanta, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, the Rev. Caston Friday Jr. and Terrance McNeil.

Chalmers Luke Godwin Jr.

WINNSBORO - Chalmers Luke Godwin Jr., 81, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005.


A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31 from First Baptist Church of Winnsboro conducted by the Rev. Mark Chapman. Burial followed in the church cemetery on Hudson Street Extension.

First Baptist Church in Winnsboro; the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605-4277; or a charity of one's choice.

Born in Summerton, Mr. Godwin was a son of the late Chalmers Luke Sr. and Anna Snow Huggins Godwin. He graduated from Summerton High School and was a 1953 graduate of Clemson College. Mr. Godwin taught Vocational Agriculture at Branchville High School. Later he became sales manager of Horne Motors, after which he became part owner of McLaughlin Ford in Sumter. From Sumter, Mr. Godwin moved his family to Winnsboro where he owned and operated Godwin Ford. After his career in the automotive industry, Mr. Godwin worked in the South Carolina Senate Agriculture Research Committee under Sen. Ed Garrison.

Mr. Godwin served in World War II in the United States Army and received the EAMET Campaign Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the Victory Medal. He served with the 5th Army in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. Mr. Godwin was a member of American Legion Post 11, the York Rite, the Jamil Shrine Temple, the Winnsboro Masonic Lodge 11, and First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Nolte Godwin of the home; three sons, Franklin M. “Frank” (Brenda) Godwin of Santee, Chalmers Edward “Ed” (Marcia) Godwin of Irmo, and Jon Luke (Debbie) Godwin of Blythewood; two brothers, Dr. Winston Y. Godwin of Cheraw, and Joharie L. Godwin of Summerton; two sisters, Mrs. E.T. (Margie) Chandler of Olanta, and Mrs. P.D. (Sybil) Quillin of Virginia Beach, Va.; and five grandchildren, James Luke Godwin, Ashley Jean Godwin, Allison Denise Godwin, Kevin White Godwin and Christina Ann Godwin.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Louise Godwin and Willa Jean Davis.

Joharie L. Godwin

SUMMERTON - Joharie L. Godwin, 74, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2006 at his home.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 in Grove Hill Cemetery in Darlington with the Rev. Garland S. Hart officiating.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Hall Academy, 1315 S. Dukes St., Summerton, S.C. 29148; or Laurence Manning Academy, Manning, S.C.

Born in Summerton, Mr. Godwin was a son of the late Chalmers Luke and Anna Snow Huggins Godwin. He graduated from Summerton High School and Clemson A&M (now University) in 1953. Mr. Godwin was a Captain in the United States Army. He was owner of Godwin Tractor of Summerton for many years, serving a large region of South Carolina. Mr. Godwin was a deacon at Summerton Baptist Church, where he also served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a Mason as well as a member of the Summerton Lions Club.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Stone Godwin of the home; two sons Joharie “Joey” L. (Sheree) Godwin of Summerton, and Jim (
Shannon) Godwin of Darlington; a daughter, Joanna (Tony) Hall of Florence; six grandchildren, Lauren Godwin (a senior at USC), Brittany and Joharie “J.”L. Godwin III, Merritt Hall, Anna-Leigh Hall and Peyton Godwin; a brother, Dr. Winston Y. Godwin of Cheraw; and two sisters, Mrs. E.T. (Margie) Chandler of Olanta, and Mrs. P.D. (Sybil) Quillin of Virginia Beach, Va.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Chalmers L. Godwin Jr.; and two sisters, Anna Louise Godwin and Willa Jean Davis.

Victoria Teal Higgins

BEAUFORT - Victoria Teal Higgins, 10, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005 in McLeod Medical Center in Florence.

A prayer service was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22. A mass of Christian burial was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 23 from St. Peter's Catholic Church. Burial followed in Beaufort Memorial Gardens.

Born in Beaufort, Miss Higgins was a daughter of Elizabeth “Beth” Teal Higgins and Patrick Higgins. She was a fourth grader at

Surviving are her parents of Beaufort; a brother, Nicholas Higgins of Beaufort; a sister, Emily Higgins of Beaufort; her maternal grandmother, Patricia Teal of Cheraw; and her paternal grandparents, Martin and Joan Scheck Higgins of Beaufort.

Mary Anna Hinson

CHESTERFIELD - Mary Anna Hinson, 76, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005 at Cheraw Healthcare after an illness.

A funeral service was held at
3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28 from the Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith with Elder Joe C. Tisdale officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Anson County, N.C., Mrs. Hinson was a daughter of the late Joe Perrin and Roseanna Lindsey. She attended the public schools of Anson County. Mrs. Hinson was a devoted and loving mother who loved to sew and crochet. She often sewed for others. Mrs. Hinson was a domestic worker for over 40 years. She attended Chesterfield Church.

Surviving are her husband, Weldon Hinson of the home; two sons, James Lee Hinson of Cheraw, and Weldon Hinson Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; Danny Lee Hinson, whom she raised as a son; four brothers, Eugene Perrin of Albany, N.Y., John Perrin of Charlotte, N.C., and Haywood Lee Perrin and Willie Bruce Perrin of Greensboro, N.C.; four sisters, Betty (John) Little and Bernice Henderson of Greensboro, Mamie Lee Ketter of Bronx, N.Y., and Lugene of Norman, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Howell (Clara) Hinson of Baltimore, Mary.; a sister-in-law, Velderah of Baltimore; an aunt, Annie Bell Marshall of Greensboro; 13 grandchildren, Alonzo, Martrail, Syretta, Mertice, Kahaliah Nicole, Muhammad Jamal, Kareem Elijah, Jasmine Nichole, Ruby Lee, Shelly, Danny Leroy, Lorraine and Lonnie Lester; nine great-grand-children; and a number of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Hinson.

Margaret Elizabeth Threatt ‘Bess' Hoffman

HARTSVILLE - Margaret Elizabeth Threatt “Bess” Hoffman, 101, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27 from Middendorf Baptist Church with the Revs. Don Rhyne and Ed Griggs officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Lancaster, Mrs. Hoffman was a daughter of the late Oscar and Lucy Mahaffey Threatt. She was a member of Middendorf Baptist Church, was a member of the W.M.U. and taught Sunday School. Mrs. Hoffman taught school for many years in North and South Carolina. She was honored by the South Carolina Legislature on her 100th birthday with a certificate of appreciation for her dedication to her family, community and state.

Surviving are her husband, Ebbie Hoffman of Hartsville; three sisters, Julia T. Lyman of Columbia, Gertrude T. Potts of Florence, and Sarah T. Haynes of Moreland, Ga.

William ‘Bill' Thornwell Hunter Sr.

Cheraw - William “Bill” Thornwell Hunter Sr., 71, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005.

1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 from Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Born in Cheraw, Mr. Hunter was a son of the late Julius Thornwell and Myrtis Therrell Hunter. He was a retired construction worker.

Surviving are a son, William T. Hunter Jr. of Wake County, N.C.; a sister, Mary Hunter (Wade) Freeman of Knightsdale, N.C.; two brothers, Jimmy R. (Gerald) Hunter of Knights-dale, and Jackie (Joan) Hunter of Raleigh, N.C.; and a number other relatives and friends.

Lillian Creola G. Ivey

HARTSVILLE - Lillian Creola G. Ivey, 93, died Dec. 30, 2005.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mrs. Ivey was a daughter of the late William Shelton and Lou Weatherford Gainey.

Surviving are four children, Hubert Gainey, Doris Robinson, Janie Lizardi and Betty Hodge; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

John Wayne Outlaw

WALLACE - John Wayne Outlaw, 64, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2005 at his home.

A funeral service was held at
3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30 from Emanuel Holiness Church.

Born in Cheraw, Mr. Outlaw was a son of the late John Preston and Dorothy Hatcher Outlaw. He was a painter and talented musician. Mr. Outlaw attended
Wallace Emanuel Holiness Church.

Surviving are two sons, Steve Outlaw and Gary Outlaw of
High Point, N.C.; a brother, J.T. Outlaw of Wallace; and a sister, Louise Quick of Wallace.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Pearly Ellen Boone.

Ernest Robinson

HAMLET, N.C. - Ernest Robinson, 79, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005 at his home.

A funeral service was held at
1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28 from Church of God of Prophecy at Ghio with the Revs. Ellis Autry, Randall Snead and Samuel Watkins officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Marlboro County, Mr. Robinson was a son of James and Rose Paul Robinson, and was a widower of Lara English Robinson. He was a mechanic and worked for Buttercup and John Deere Implements. Mr. Robinson was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy at Ghio.

Surviving are five daughters, Nellie Thompson, Margaret Jeffrey and Janice Cottingham of Hamlet, Sarah Leviner of Cheraw, and Ethel Faye Robinson of Fayetteville, N.C.; five sons, Ernest James Robinson, Curtis Robinson, Grady Wayne Robinson and Stevie Lynn Robinson of Hamlet, and Keith Allen Robinson of Bennettsville; two brothers, Hubert Robinson and James W. “Yankie” Robinson of Bennettsville; three sisters, Bertha Mae Knight of McColl, Rosa Anderson of Laurinburg, N.C., and Lucille Robinson of Laurel Hill, N.C.; 23 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Robson.

She retired from Anvil Knitwear after more than 40 years of service. Mrs. Rogers was a member of Mullins First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Crusaders Sunday School Class.

Surviving are a son, Clyde H. (Dianne) Rogers of Cheraw; a daughter, Jennie (Jim) Elliott of Mullins; four grand-children; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gladys Long of Barnwell, and Catherine Morris of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Cleve Mayers Jr., and three sisters, Ann Bray, Inez Gass and Betty Rogers.

George Andrew Rowie

CHERAW - George Andrew Rowie, 91, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005.

Born in Marlboro County, Mr. Rowie was a son of the late Andrew and Dinah Rowie. He was educated in Chesterfield County and worked at several different jobs. Mr. Rowie was a member of Mt. Hebron AME Zion Church and was a loving, caring family person.

Surviving are a son, Robert (Mildred) Rowie of Cheraw; four grandsons, Robert Rowie of Matthews, N.C., Michael (Zelda) Rowie of Crowley, La., Gerald (Dazeree) Rowie of Charlotte, N.C., and Chris (Bernadette) Rowie of Cheraw; six great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; two children, George “Monk” Jr. and Elizabeth; seven siblings; and a grandchild, Roberta.

Mrs. Stanton was formerly employed as a bookkeeper.

Thomas Edward Sweatt Sr.

MCBEE - Thomas Edward Sweatt Sr., 73, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Sweatt was a son of the late Wilton Lee and Pearl Kirkley Sweatt. He was a member of McBee United Methodist Church and the American Legion. He retired from DuPont after 35 years of service. Mr. Sweatt was in the United States Navy serving on the submarine U.S.S. Douglas H. Fox.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Dixon Sweatt of McBee; a son, Thomas E. (Barbara) Sweatt Jr. of Hartsville; a daughter, Dianne S. (Frank) Plyler of McBee; and a granddaughter, Nicole P. (Scott) Fisk of Columbia.

Frank James Wilkes

PATRICK - Frank James Wilkes, 76, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Wilkes was a son of the late Clara Wilkes and Pormel Harper. He joined Piney Grove Baptist Church at an early age and later joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Mr. Wilkes served there as a Deacon since 1941 and later became

chairman of the board. He was employed for many years at the Sash, Door and Lumber Company and later worked for Cheraw Dyeing and Finishing Company, from which he retired. Mr. Wilkes was president of the Truelight Gospel Singers, served in the community as part of the Patrick Jaycees and was president of the Singing Convention for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Dora A. Wilkes; three sons, James (Marie) Wilkes, Herbert (Joeann) Wilkes and Sgt. (Ret.) Leopold (Bonnie) Wilkes; three daughters, Mary, Willie Mae and Barbara; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; an aunt, Bertha Scurry of Wilmington, Del.; an adopted sister, Katherine McKenzie; three sisters-in-law, Daisy Larry, Betty Jackson, and Floretha McFarlan; a brother-in-law, Ernest McFarlan; and a number of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a sister and two sons.

Born in Florence, Mrs. Brasington was a daughter of Edyce Jackson Brasing-ton and the late Jasper Leo Brasington Jr. She graduated from Columbia College and earned her post-graduate degrees from the University of South Carolina. For many years, Ms. Brasington served as a public school librarian and currently served on the Library Staff at Northeastern Technical College. At an early age, Ms. Brasington was active in the Girl Scouts of America and served as an assistant scout leader. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cheraw, a member of the New Horizons Sunday School Class, and a member of the Chancel Choir.

Surviving are her mother of Cheraw; two sisters, Nonie Brasington (Steve) Turner of Houston, Texas, and Kathy Brasington (Jim) Bartlett of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and a nephew, Andy Turner of
Houston.

 

She was predeceased by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Brasington Sr. of Cheraw, and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Allen Jackson of Timmonsville.

Born in
Baldwin, W.Va., Mr. James was a son of the late Parker and Birdie M. Peters James. He was a United States Army and National Guard veteran. Mr. James was a volunteer with the Cash Fire Department, serving as a trustee, firefighter, first shift Captain and maintenance officer for more than 20 years. He was an honorary member of the Chicora Indian tribe and member of the Delta 2 Fire Brigade. Mr. James had attended Cash Baptist Church and Welsh Neck Baptist Church. In high school he was a member of the FFA. He was retired from Delta and was a member of the 25 and 40 plus years club.

Surviving are his wife, Betty M. James of Cheraw; two sons, Earl (Gail) James of Cheraw, and Paul (Darlene) James of Society Hill; a daughter, Jennie (Rusty) Chapman of Cheraw; and two grandchildren, Selena James of Society Hill, and Jesse Ray “J.R.” Chapman, who is serving our country in
Kuwait.


He was preceded in death by a sister, Ellen Betcher.

Darlington County, Mr. Ketter was a son of Mamie Perrin and the late Curley Junis Ketter. He was employed at several textile industries, was a farm laborer and later worked as a mechanic, passing this trade down to his sons. Mr. Ketter's favorite activities were fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.


Surviving are four daughters, Teresa (Nelson) McDaniel, Tammy McFarland, and Melissa Ketter and Lucille Ketter of Hartsville; three sons, Leroy (Chenitha) Ketter and Ricky (Ashely) Cotton of Hartsville, and Levern (Laura) Ketter of Cheraw; three sisters, Rosetta, Evelyn and Patricia Ann of the Bronx, N.Y.; five brothers, Calvin, George, William, Curley II and Kenneth of the Bronx; 15 grand-children; and a number of other relatives and friends.

 CHERAW - Ollie “Nana” Brower Pegues, 91, died
Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006 at Cheraw Healthcare nursing home of natural causes.


A funeral service was held Saturday, Jan. 7 from Morris Funeral Cottage Chapel. Burial followed in
Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.


Mrs. Pegues was a daughter of the late Simon Gete and Hettie Robinson Brower, she was the widow of Pat Marlboro Pegues. She briefly attended
Robert Smalls Elementary School before entering the workforce. She provided domestic care for many prominent families in Cheraw and also worked at the Cheraw Box Mill for several years. She and her husband returned to Cheraw in 1962. She was a member of Mt. Hebron AME Zion Church where she served on the usher board and in the choir. Mrs. Pegues loved to dance, walk around town, and loved animals and people.


Surviving are a daughter, Carolyne B. Williams; a son, Lee Charles Brower of New Haven, Conn.; five grandchildren, Beverly (Brian) Williams-Coles of Richmond, Va., Linda (Rob) Greer of Saugerties, N.Y., Pamela Brower of Binghamton, N.Y., Cynthia (Mark) Brower of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Charles Young of New Haven; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia McIver of Detroit, Mich., and Bessie Davis of New York, N.Y.; four brothers, Simon (Florence) Ford of Baltimore, Mary., Thomas (Donna) Ford of Columbia, Albert (Ann) Ford of Teaneck, N.J., and Howard Ford of New York.

Greensboro, N.C., Mr. Pleasant was a son of the late David L. and Lena Mae Bean Pleasant. He was a leader in advertising for over 50 years. Mr. Pleasant retired in 1999 after directing advertising for the Moore's Department Store chain for 34 years. He was a World War II, and United States Army Air Corps Veteran. Mr. Pleasant was a Flight Engineer-Gunner and flew combat missions over enemy occupied territory in Austria, Poland, Yugoslavia and Germany. He was a POW in Yugoslavia. Mr. Pleasant was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Cheraw, and the Berean Sunday School Class.


Surviving are his wife Juliette Ross Pleasant of Cheraw; a son, David H. Pleasant of Florence; a daughter, Susan Pleasant of Ellijay, Ga.; three stepdaughters, Caroline Martin of Florence, Jo Bellamy of Wilmington, N.C., and Kathy Skinner of Ocean Springs, Miss.; two stepsons, “Andy” Martin of Charleston, Henry “Bud” Bellamy III of Christiansburg, Va.; four sisters, Frances Brinkley, Ruth Armen-trout and Dot Bell of

Thomasville, N.C., and Billie Lee of Greensboro, N.C.; and eight grand-children.

Lynn, Mass., Mr. Walker was a son of Julian D. Walker Sr. and Lucy Bragg Walker McDonough, and was the former husband of Nell Giddens. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and his community by his service in many fire departments across South Carolina spanning 40 plus years: James Island, Hanahan, Goose Creek, and Cheraw where he also served as a police officer. Mr. Walker retired as the Assistant Fire Chief from the Goose Creek Fire Department and served as former Fire Chief with the Hanahan Fire Department. He retired as the Fire Safety Officer for Bayer Corp. and was a member of Goose Creek Masonic Lodge 401 A.F.M., the S.C. Fire Chief's Association and the National Chief's Association.

Surviving are a daughter, Judy (Ross) Moody of North Charleston; three sons, Jerry (Barbara) Walker of North Charleston, Charles Walker of Goose Creek, and Jay (Mary) Walker of Taylorsville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.


He was preceded in death by a brother, T.W. “Billy” Walker of Cheraw.

Anson County, Mrs. Wilkes was a daughter of the late Peter Raymond and Carrie Aileen Gaddy Eddins. She had worked at Becky's Dress Shop and B.C. Moore's. Mrs. Wilkes was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church.

Cape Girardeau, Mo., Mrs. Barber was a daughter of the late Dewey Lee and Virginia Wessell Talley. She attended Ohio State University and was a library aid in Chagrin Falls High School for many years. Her love and devotion for children were evident in her continuing relationships with those students for many years after they had graduated. Mrs. Barber was a homemaker and an avid gardener, floral arranger and decorator. She was an associate member of the First United Methodist Church of Cheraw and was a member of Chagrin Falls United Methodist Church in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. She and her husband were former residents of Chagrin Falls, Ohio area for over 35 years.

Surviving are her husband Charles D. “Chuck” Barber of Cheraw; a son, Charles “Chip” (Karen) Barber II of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters, Cheryl Marie Barber (Sarah Andrews) of Willoughby, Ohio, and Elizabeth “Beth” Barber of Cheraw; two sisters, Virginia E. Williams of Hudson, Ohio, and Nancy Jo Martin of Amelia Island, Fla.; a brother John Talley of Whittier, Calif.; three grandchildren, Lee Tillman of Charleston, Carolyn Marsch Tillman of Cheraw, and Alyssa Ruth Barber of Raleigh, N.C.

Anderson ‘Bernie' Burns Jr.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Anderson Burns Jr., 70, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 from Pee Dee Union Baptist Church with the Revs. Jerry Corbett, Anthony Hooks and Lila Mae Hooks, and Bishop Jerry T. Hardison officiating. Burial followed in Montrose Cemetery.

Chesterfield County, Mr. Burns was a son of the late Anderson and Lannie Burns. He was educated in the pubic schools of South Carolina. Converted at an early age, he joined the New Zion Baptist Church. In 1959 He became a member of the King James Jurisdiction A.A.S.R., Inc. Mr. Burns moved to Brooklyn and was lastly employed by Adelphi Academy.

Surviving are his wife, Ivory Lee Burns; a son, Rickey Reed of Cheraw; six stepchildren, John, Gregory, James Carl, Grant, Cynthia Grubbs, Margaret and Thomas Grubbs, who also preceded him in death; seven sisters, Hattie Burns, Carolyn Burns-Patterson, Ophelia (James) Ellerbe, Isabell Ellerbe and Betty Jones of Cheraw, and Bernice “Bonnie” Henderson and Ruth Sheppard of Coatesville, Pa.; Ernest Jones of Coatesville; a sister-in-law, Maggie Burns of Tampa, Fla.; five brothers, Robert and Ernest Burns, and Richard, Cleveland and J.C. Jones; a niece who was like a daughter, Rosalyn Gail Burns of Brooklyn; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Born in Kershaw County, Mrs. Allen was a daughter of the late James and Catherine M. Mungo, and was the widow of Ernest Allen. She joined Sandy Grove UM Church at an early age. After moving to Durham, N.C., Mrs. Allen became a member of Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. She was a member of the Senior Choir and the Greater St. Paulette's Missionary Circle. Mrs. Allen later joined Orange Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she attended faithfully until her health failed.

Surviving are a daughter, Emma Jean Allen; a granddaughter, Corretta Allen, both of Durham; a sister, Follie Mae Spencer of Baltimore, Mary.; two brothers, Willie (Malinda) Mungo of Pageland and Booker T. Mungo of Baltimore; a special niece, Lenora Brown; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Caddell was a son of Willie Joe and the late Shelby Jean Starling Caddell. He served in the United States Air Force and was employed with Sonoco Products Company in the paper mill. Mr. Caddell coached the Kiwanis team in the Hartsville National League Baseball.

Surviving are his wife, Michelle Johnson Caddell of Hartsville; two sons, Dylan Caddell and Caleb Caddell of Hartsville; his father of Hartsville; sisters, Lisa Caddell (Nickey) Simmons and Tabetha Caddell (Tal) Windham of Lamar; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Carolyn Talley Barber

CHERAW - Carolyn Talley Barber, 75, died at her home Saturday, January 14, 2006, after a brief illness.

A service to honor the life of Carolyn Barber will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2006, at First United Methodist Church in Cheraw.

Born in Cape Girardeau, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Dewey Lee and Virginia Wessell Talley. She attended Ohio State University and was a library aid in the Chagrin Falls High School for many years.

Her love and devotion for children were evident in her continuing relationships with those students for many years after they had graduated. Mrs. Barber most enjoyed being a homemaker and was an avid gardener, floral arranger and decorator.

She was an associate member of First United Methodist Church of Cheraw and was a member of Chagrin Falls United Methodist Church in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She shared a warm and loving sprit, a giving and gracious heart, and an endearing smile and laughter. She will be missed by her family and friends. She and her husband were former residents of the Chagrin Falls, Ohio, area for more than 35 years.

Surviving are her husband, Charles D. “Chuck” Barber of Cheraw; one son, Charles “Chip” (Karen) Barber II of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters, Cheryl Marie Barber (Sarah Andrews) of Willoughby, Ohio, and Elizabeth “Beth” Barber of Cheraw; two sisters, Virginia E. Williams of Hudson, Ohio, and Nancy Jo Martin of Amelia Island, Fla.; a brother, John Talley of Whittier, Calif.; three grandchildren, Lee Tillman of Charleston, Carolyn Marsch Tillman of Cheraw, and Alyssa Ruth Barber of Raleigh, N.C.

 CHERAW - Ray A. James, 67, died Monday, January 9, 2006.

Born in Baldwin, W.V., Mr. James was a son of the late Parker and Birdie M. Peters James. He was a U.S. Army and National Guard Veteran. He was a volunteer with the Cash Fire Dept., serving as trustee, firefighter, first shift Captain, and Maintenance Officer for more than 20 years. He was an honorary member of the Chicora Indian Tribe and member of the Delta #2 Fire Brigade. Mr. James had attended Cash Baptist Church and Welsh Neck Baptist Church. In high school, he was a member of the FFA. He was retired from Delta and was a member of the 25 and 40 plus years club.

Surviving are: his wife, Betty M. James of Cheraw; two sons, Earl (Gail) James of Cheraw and Paul (Darlene) James of Society Hill; a daughter, Jennie (Rusty) Chapman of Cheraw; and two grandchildren, Selena James of Society Hill and Jesse Ray “J.R.” Chap-man, who is serving our country in
Kuwait.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Ellen Betcher.

Mary Henrietta Blackwell

CHESTERFIELD - Mary Henrietta Blackwell, 70, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 from Mt. Mary Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence Byrd, the Rev. Jerry Corbett and the Rev. Gregory Freeman officiating. Burial followed in the Drucilla A.M.E. Zion Church cemetery.

Mrs. Blackwell was a daughter of the late Wilbert Turnage and George Anna Cranford. She was converted at an early age and joined Teal's Chapel Baptist Church, where she served until her health failed.

Surviving are three daughters, Rona McBride, Gail Peterson and Cynthia Blackwell, all of Cheraw; four sons, Jefferey Turnage of Cheraw, Chris Turnage of Charlotte, N.C., Emerson (Debbie) Blackwell of Woodbridge, Va., and David Blackwell of Alexandria, Va.; a sister, Cubie Gillespie of Alexandria; an aunt, Odessa Asbury of Baltimore, Md., 12 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a devoted niece and nephew, William and Anna Turnage; two very special great-nephews, Travis Drake of Boone, N.C. and Larry Turnage of Alexandria; a very special great-niece, Fiona Turnage of Alexandria; a devoted friend, Connie McBride; and a number of other relatives and friends.

William “Buster” Ervin Gaskins

WALLACE - William “Buster” Ervin Gaskins, 46, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006.

Born in Cheraw, Mr. Gaskins was a son of John T. and Lois Gaskins. He worked for INA Bearing USA for over 12 years. Mr. Gaskins enjoyed Clemson Tiger and Marlboro County football. He had a real passion for riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Mr. Gaskins was looking forward to the arrival of two special grandchildren in the spring.

Mrs. Wright was a daughter of the late Straut Alsbrooks and Mary Louallen, and was the widow of William Wright. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully until her demise, a member of OES Chapter 234 Golden Gate, and was retired from Caro Knit.

Surviving are nine sons, Bobby (Dorothy) Wright, Curtis (Mildred) Wright, Roger (Yolanda) Wright, Frankie (Vivian) Wright, Don (Sherry) Wright, the Rev. Jimmy Wright, Terry Wright, Ben Wright, and Franklin (Tammy) Wright; four daughters, Betty Robinson, Ann (Calvin) Johnson, Gail Wright, and Peaches Wright; a foster son, Roy (Clara) Sowell Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Otis (Mary) Sowell of Jefferson; three sisters, Martha Mae Funderburk of Charlotte, Annie Mae Louallen of Bronx, N.Y., and Catherine Tate of Pageland; an aunt, Sadie Crawford of Cheraw; two sisters-in-law; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Born in Pageland, Mrs. Snipes was a daughter of the late James and Alice Williams, and was the widow of Ernest Melvin Snipes. She was a member of

Mrs. Snipes was a former employee of Springs Industries and a retired seamstress.

She was a lifetime member of the Catawba Pioneer Club, was a member of the Senior Circle at Springs Memorial Hospital, and was a volunteer at HOPE and Springs Memorial Hospital.

He retired from the Railway Express Office of the Seaboard Coastline Railroad and from Burlington Industries. Mr. Williamson was a United States Navy veteran and served in the S.C. National Guard. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cheraw, where he was a member of the Men's Club, the Men's Bible Class, and the Daycare Board of Directors. Mr. Williamson was also a member of Quail Unlimited.

Surviving are two daughters, Martha W. Starling of Wallace, and Barbara McDaniel of Patrick; three sons, Howard D. Williamson Jr. of Columbia, Douglas A. Williamson of Dunn, N.C., and Bruce H. Williamson of Cheraw; two brothers, Glenn F. Williamson and Ravelnel Williamson of Cheraw; two sisters, Roberta W. Brigman of Cheraw, and Diane W. Walls of Cross; and seven grandchildren.

Born in the Middendorf Community, Mrs. Hancock was a daughter of the late Henry McIver and Nettie Hodges Hoffman, and was the widow of John Ross Hancock. She was a graduate of Chicago School of Nursing and was a nurse for 35 years, working at Powe and Byerly hospitals in Hartsville, and the Perry Clinic in Chesterfield. Mrs. Hancock was a founder of the South Carolina Association of LPN's and the South Carolina State Licensed Practical Nurses Board of Directors. She was a former chairman of the LPN South Carolina State Association, served on all committees and held other officer positions. Mrs. Hancock was the first nurse in Darlington County and the eighth nurse in the state to receive her license as an LPN. Mrs. Hancock was a member of Dunwoody Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Marylie Dority (
Lynn) Schmidt of Dacula, Ga.; a granddaughter, Susan Woodworth Caldwell of Athens, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Caroline Caldwell and Andrew Caldwell of Athens; a sister, Rosalie Hoffman Sexton of Clio; a niece, JoAnn Sexton Hickman of Richmond, Va.; and a great- niece and nephew, JoAnna (John) Hickman and Robert Hickman of Richmond.

She joined Timmonsville Baptist Church at an early age where she remained faithful until her health declined. She was a Sunday School teacher, secretary and treasurer, missionary president and treasurer, Deaconess, president of the senior choir, president of the Usher Board, and Mother of the church.

Surviving are four daughters, Gloria J. Pfeiffer of Chandler, Ariz., and Linda Belk, Clarice Hogbrok and Elaine Daniels of Chesterfield; three sons, Duronnie L. (Bernice) Harrell of Charlotte, N.C., and Milton Harrell and Anthony Harrell of Chesterfield; two sisters, Eloise Stone of Fayetteville, N.C., and Marie Streater of Monroe, N.C.; two brothers, the Rev. William Joines of Jefferson, and Robert Joines of Fayetteville; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a number of other relatives and friends.

He worked for Galey and Lord in Society Hill.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12 from Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by the Revs. Lawrence F. Hays Jr., David B. Smith and David F. Ervin. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Honorary escorts were United Methodist ministers and their wives.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Morrison was a son of the late Daniel A. Morrison Sr. and Marie Stokes Morrison. The Rev. Morrison served 39 years as a United Methodist minister of the S.C. United Methodist Conference, serving in 19 churches, and was Pastor Emeritus of Bethel United Methodist Church, Spartanburg. He graduated from McBee High School, and then attended the University of South Carolina and Duke Divinity School.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Jeanette Pierce Morrison of the home; two sons, Daniel Richard (Carolyn) Morrison of Piedmont, and Martin Dale (Beverly) Morrison of Liberty; two daughters, Cindy Marie (Steve) Johnson of Inman, and Dana Catherine Morrison and friend, Darlene Myles of Spartanburg; two sisters, Frances Morrison and Elizabeth Frostick of McBee; three brothers, Mendel Morrison and Olin Morrison of McBee, and Frank Morrison of Hartsville; five grandchildren, Christy (George) Rabon , Chase (Morgan) Morrison, Heather Morrison, Richard Morrison and Caitlyn Johnson; and two great-grandchildren, Brooke Rabon and Dustin Rabon.

T.C. Ratliff

LILESVILLE, N.C. - T.C. “Top Cat” Ratliff, 78, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006.

A funeral service will be held at
1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 from Centenary AME Zion, with the Rev. L.H. McClung officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Smith's Funeral from 2-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, and at the church one-half hour before the service.

A native Ansonian, N.C., Mr. Ratliff was a son of the late Thomas and Rosa Spencer Ratliff. He was educated in
Anson County schools. Mr. Ratliff was a veteran of the United States Navy, from which he earned an honorable discharge. He was a longtime member of Centenary AME Zion Church, and served on its Trustee and Usher boards.

Surviving are four daughters, Diane (George) Robinson of Lilesville, and Kimberly Harrington (editor of The Cheraw Chronicle & The Chesterfield Advertiser), Ametra Teal and Cass-andra Rivers of Wadesboro, N.C.; four sisters, Jane Russell of New York City, and Lee Ann (Clarence) White, Mae Frances Ellerby and Annie Melton of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Charles Ratliff; a daughter, Denise Marshall; and a brother, Fred Ratliff.

 Eudora H. Reynolds

FLORENCE - Eudora Hancock Reynolds, 72, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2006 in a local hospice facility after an illness.

A funeral service was held at
4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12 from Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Born in Pageland, Mrs. Reynolds was a daughter of the late Thomas Elbert and Wilma Funderburk Hancock, and was the widow of June Frank Reynolds. She graduated from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte, N.C., and was a registered nurse at McLeod Hospital in Florence for 37 years until her retirement in 1996. Mrs. Reynolds was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Peggy Reynolds (Gary) Hendrick of Florence; a son, Tommy (Jackie) Reynolds of Timmonsville; three sisters, Fran Moore of Pageland, Marty Lamb of Sumter, and Sue Morey of Gaston; a brother, Robert Hancock of Pageland; three grandchildren, Greg Hendrick, Daniel Hendrick and Kelly Reynolds; and caregivers, Annette Heath and Geraldine Barefoot.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Dawkins; and two brothers, Harry Hancock and Tom Hancock.

Elizabeth Jenkins Sweat

Jenkins, Harold (Betty) Jenkins, Jimmy (Jean) Jenkins and Michael (Brenda) Jenkins of Greenville; a sister, Frances (Edward) Phillips of Taylors; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grand-children.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Sheldon Lee.

PAGELAND - Tony Ray Blackmon, 43, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006.

Annie Maude Cassidy

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Annie Maude Cassidy, 94, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006 in North General Hospital.

2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20 from Macedonia Baptist Church in Darlington with the Rev. Dr. D.L. Hughes officiating. Burial followed in Fisher Hill Cemetery.

Born in Cheraw, Miss Cassidy was a daughter of the late Charlie Cassidy and Mary Jane Sellers Cassidy. She was educated at
Robert Smalls High School. After moving to New York, she joined Gospel Temple Holiness Church until her return to Darlington, where she became a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Surviving are four sisters, Mary Leeper and Elease Wilson of New York, Louise Barrow of The Bronx, N.Y., and Florence Sawyer of Florence; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
