Charles Sherrill Burner

Charles Sherrill Bruner, 76, of Dunnellon, Fla., died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003 in Dunnellon.

A graveside funeral service was held Tuesday, Dec. 30 in Fero Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Beverly Hills, Fla.

A native of Cheraw, Mr. Bruner was a son of Paul and Ione Bennett Bruner. He went to Dunnellon from Panama City, Fla. in 1991 and remained there for 12 years. He had retired from the United States Air Force in 1975 with 30 years of active service in aircraft maintenance. He was a member of Crystal River United Methodist Church and American Legion Post #58, Dunnellon. He was a lifetime member of Edward W. Penno V.F.W. Post #4864, Citrus Springs, DAV, NCOA (Non-Commissioned Officers Association), and Air Force Sergeants Association. He was a 4th degree Mason with Callaway Masonic Lodge #369 in Callaway, York Rite Masonic Bodies of Panama City and a Shriner with Shaddai Shrine Temple in Panama City. He had received his 50-year Masonic Pin and was a member of Panama City Order of Eastern Star, Chapter #102.

Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Patsy Bruner of Dunnellon; a daughter, April Bradshaw of Bay City, Texas; a brother, John Robert Bruner of Columbia; three grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Flora M. Holliman of Dunnellon; two nieces; two nephews; and several aunts and uncles.

Estelle Cole

Estelle Cole, 70, of Wallace, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003 at Chesterfield General Hospital.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 from Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, Cheraw. Burial followed in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Wallace.

Born in Marlboro County, Mrs. Cole was a daughter of the late Hezekiah and Ruth Crowder Cole. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness.

Surviving are six children, Shelia Cole, Jeffery Cole of Queens, N.Y., Michael Cole and Anita (Veto) Lemar of Brooklyn, N.Y., Peggy Gould and Prince Cole of Rockingham, N.C.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, two sisters, Linda Hamilton of Washington, D.C., and Elouise Galloway of Long Island, N.Y.; three brothers, John Cole of Washington, D.C., James Cole and Hezekiah Cole Jr. of the home; an aunt, Etta Gadson of Bronx, N.Y.; and a number of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by five sisters and a brother.

Ruby Genevieve Snowden Floyd

Ruby Genevieve Snowden Floyd, 94, of Lake City, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004 in Florence.

A graveside funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7 in Lake City Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Lake City First Baptist Church Building or Music Fund, 110 S. Church St., Lake City, S.C. 29560.

Born in Indiantown, Mrs. Floyd was a daughter of the late William James and Amelia Josina Snowden. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and a dedicated educator who taught in Florence County schools for over 15 years. She was a member of Indiantown Presbyterian Church and joined Lake City First Baptist Church after her marriage to the late Felton Livingston Floyd. Mrs. Floyd was a member of the Cecil Rogers Sunday School Class, Tuesday Afternoon Literary Club and Wednesday Afternoon Book Club.

Surviving are two daughters, Amelia Floyd (Derrick) Barton of Memphis, Tenn., and Elizabeth "Libby" (Tommy) Atkinson of Chesterfield; three grandchildren, Amelia Catherine Greer, Kevin Thomas Atkinson and Jason Floyd Atkinson; and three great-grandchildren, William Stewart Greer, Matthew Snowden Greer and Kaitlin Genevieve Atkinson.

Otis B. Gainey

Otis B. Gainey, 77, of Hartsville, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 from Patrick Baptist Church. Burial followed in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Gainey was a son of the late Walter Blease and Mary Jordan Gainey. He was a retired employee of Carolina Canners and a United States Army veteran. Mr. Gainey was a member of Patrick Baptist Church, DAV Chapter 47 and WOW. He was married to the late Mittie Purvis Gainey.

Surviving are two sons, the Rev. Larry Gainey of Wallace, and Otis Gainey Jr. of Chesterfield; two daughters, Patsy G. White of Patrick, and Anita G. Hicks of Hartsville; a sister, Marie Tolson of Patrick; a special friend, Grace Wallace of Cheraw; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Horace Gary

Horace Gary, 66, of Cheraw, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 from Pee Dee Union Baptist Church. Burial followed in McCall-Shields Cemetery.

Mr. Gary was educated in the public schools of Chesterfield County. After school, he started a career with O.C. Howard and Jimmy Thompson. He was married to Jessie Mae McMillian.

Surviving are his children, Horace (Junior) Gary and Tammy (Keith) Gary Avents all of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren, Donté Smith, Jessica Gary, Sidney Baldwin, Keivon Avents, Keisha Gary and Keith Gary all of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Bernice Rutherford of New York City; brothers, Edward (Jennie) Gary of Cheraw, James Gary of New York, N.Y., and Leroy (Lady) Gary of Cleveland, Ohio; an aunt, Marie (Charles) Williams of Walterboro; an uncle, Herbert Shields of Englewood, N.J.; and a number of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Alphonso O. Gary; a sister, Annie Mae Dorsey; and a brother, Henry Gary.

Horace 'Doll' Grooms Jr.

Horace "Doll" Grooms Jr., 73, of Cheraw, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003.

A funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 from Beaver Dam Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Jones Family Cemetery.

Born in Kershaw County, Mr. Grooms was a son of Maggie Grooms and the late Horace Grooms Sr. H was an active member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. He was educated at Cross Road Elementary School and attended Coulter Academy in Cheraw. He was called to military service in 1951, serving in the Infantry Division where he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, two bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. After separation from the military, Mr. Grooms relocated to New York where he studied and learned the trade of screen printing. He owned and operated a screen printing business in Rock Hill and retired as a Master Screen Printer in 1999. He was first married to the late Ella McGee, and then to the late May Etta Caldwell.

Surviving are a son, Mark (Sandra Tribble) Grooms of Charlotte, N.C.; three daughters, Patricia (Freddie Covington) Newton of Bennettsville, Cynthia (Horace) Jennings of Rock Hill, and Linda McGee of New York City; his mother of Wallace; two sisters, Minnie McGee and Rosa Bell Leak of Wallace; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Grooms of Wallace and Ida Mae Dart of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and adopted sister, Shirley Rambert; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Wilson C. Harris

Wilson C. Harris, 90, of Chesterfield, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003 at Chesterfield Convalescent Center.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 from Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Edward Davidson officiating. Burial followed in the Teal Family Cemetery, Teal Cemetery Road, Chesterfield.

Born in Marlboro County, Mr. Harris was a son of the late Austin C. Harris and Bessie Fields Harris. He was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church, Bennettsville, but had attended Zoar United Methodist Church, Cheraw, for more than 30 years. He retired in 1972 from the United States Postal Service as a postman.

Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Elizabeth Teal Gaddy Harris; a son, John W. Harris of Vero Beach, Fla.; a sister, Della H. Eskridge of Charlotte, N.C.; a grandson, Heath Harris of Vero Beach; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth G. Rivers of Chesterfield; three step-grandchildren, Amy R. Kiely of Liverpool, N.Y., Chris Rivers of Chesterfield, and Craig Rivers of Columbia; three nieces, Candy Altman, Nancy Williams and Cassie Eskridge; four step-great-grandchildren; and five half-nieces, including Virginia H. Campbell of Chesterfield.

He was preceded in death by a brother, A.C. Harris Jr.; a sister, Lucy Harris; and three half-brothers.

Jack Stewart Hogan

Jack Stewart Hogan, 74, of Cheraw, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004.

Born in Cheraw, Mr. Hogan was raised by his parents, the late John Henry and Josie Hamer Glover Hatchell. He was the son of the late William Joseph Jr. and Maxine Elizabeth Hatchell Hogan. He attended Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. Mr. Hogan was a member of the South Carolina High School Football Officiating Association for 25-plus years and officiated little league recreational baseball. He was a member of the Gamecock Booster Club and was an Army/National Guard veteran. He was a retired mechanical engineer from J.P. Stevens Company with 25-plus years of service.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Odom Hogan of Cheraw; three sons, Jack Stewart (Rives) Hogan Jr. of Florence, Ronnie Carroll (Wendy) Hogan of Statesville, N.C., and Kevin Jack (Maila) Hogan of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Susan Hogan (Bobby) Owens of Florence, and Kristi Hogan (Clay) Jackson of Pageland; a brother, William Joseph (Butch) Hogan III of Manning; two sisters, Evelyn Anderson of Myrtle Beach, and Patsy Hancock Conner of Conway; and eight grandchildren, Matt Owens, Stewart Owens, Samantha Owens, Rachel Hogan and Kirk Hogan all of Florence, Dillon Jackson and Zane Jackson of Pageland, and Kaile Hogan of San Diego.

Steve Evander Howle

Steve Evander Howle, 87, of Society Hill, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4 from Mount Olivet Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Wells officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Darlington County, Mr. Howle was a son of the late Boyd and Hattie Hawkins Howle. He was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and was a retired farmer.

Surviving are his wife, Nellie Edwards Howle of Society Hill; three sons, Bud (Patricia) Howle and Phillip Howle all of Cheraw, and Joe Howle of Hartsville; four daughters, Ethel Byrd, Carolyn (Don) Huggins and Jane (Ricky) Huggins all of Hartsville, and Judy (Edwin) Weatherford of Darlington; 21 grandchildren; and 19 great-grand-children.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Christolas Myers and Linda Weatherford.

Lucy Vivian Hough Johnson

Lucy Vivian Hough Johnson, 87, of Griffin, Ga., died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003 at her home in Griffin, Ga.

Born in Pageland, Mrs. Johnson, who was married to the late Warren Elmore "W.E." Johnson for 59 years, and was a daughter of the late William Franklin and Maude Lowery Hough. She was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church for over 45 years, was a member of the Ruth Kelley Sunday School Class and Women's Circle #1, and she and her husband worked with various children's programs over the years. She was previously employed with Sonoco Products Company and the Hartsville Cotton Mill, and was an active member of Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are a daughter, Becky (Wayne) Clanton of Griffin; three grandchildren, Matthew Clanton, Bryan Clanton and Lisa Clanton all of Griffin; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Myrtle and Nolan Gainey, Quin Johnson and Sarah Hough all of Hartsville, Anna Elizabeth Griggs of Concord, N.C., Floreet Johnson of Monroe, N.C., and Sarah Edmondson of Salisbury, N.C.; and two nephews, Otis B. Hough Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C., Billy Hough of Spartanburg.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Otis Hough Sr. and Roy Hough, and a sister, Annie Rivers.

Herman Mason

Herman Mason, 74, of Mt. Croghan, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004 from Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Ansonville, N.C., Mr. Mason was a son of the late William M. and Lillie Ussery Mason. He was a retired knitting machine mechanic and a United States Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 134 and Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Mr. Mason was an avid golfer and a member and past champion of Green River Country Club.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Welch Mason of the home; a daughter, Karen M. Faulkenberry and Dennis E. Bush of Marion, Va.; a sister, Patsy M. (Bill Jr.) Hooks of Wadesboro, N.C.; two grandsons, Jason W. (Penny) Faulkenberry of Frankton, Ind., and James P. Faulkenberry of Marion, Va.; special friends, Debbie L. Carpenter of Chesterfield, Crystal and Robert Battaglia and Angie and Rover Blevins all of Marion, Va.; seven nephews; 11 nieces; and his loyal dog, Bear.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1965.

John Edward Mauney

A graveside service for John Edward Mauney, 79, of Jefferson, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003.

A graveside funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 in Jefferson Cemetery.

Born in Shelby, N.C., Mr. Mauney was a son of Bailey and Nola Cooper Mauney. He worked for Caroknit and was a World War II Navy veteran.

Surviving are a son, John Edward Mauney Jr.; a daughter, Joan Spurling; a sister, Carolyn Turner; three grandchildren; and six great-grand-children.

Leslie Elliott Meares

Services for Leslie Elliott Meares, 87, of West Columbia, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003.

Born in Clarkton, N.C., Mr. Meares was a son of the late Elihu and Annie Smith Meares. He was involved in high school athletics and pitched baseball for the Palmetto League. He attended Clemson University and retired as a railroad conductor from the Savannah River Project. Prior to working 26 years at Savannah River, he worked 10 years on the Seaboard Coastline Railroad. He was a member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church and formerly of Williston Methodist Church and McBee Methodist Church, where he held several church offices. He was a former member of McBee Masonic Lodge in McBee.

Surviving are his wife, Christine Lucas Meares of West Columbia; two daughters, Betsy (Jerry) Chitty of West Columbia, and Nancy Lucas Meares of Lexington; grandchildren, Michael Scott Chitty of West Columbia, Elizabeth "Liz" Chitty (Dr. Joe Blair "Trey" III) Castles of Columbia; two grandsons, Jason Connon Littlefield of Lexington, and Matthew P. Hodges of Lexington; two great-grandsons, Joe Blair "Tradd" Castles IV and Sanders Lucas Castles of Columbia; a sister, Betty Meares Bierer of Columbia; a sister-in-law, Margie Lucas of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews.

Olivia Bishop 'Sweet' Rivers

Olivia Bishop "Sweet" Rivers, 92, of Mt. Croghan, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004.

Born in Inman, Mrs. Rivers was a daughter of the late William Whitner and Essie Hall Bishop. She was a graduate of Lander University and was a retired school teacher, having taught in the Chesterfield County school system for 32 years. Mrs. Rivers was a member of Mt. Croghan United Methodist Church and was married to the late Ivey Noel Rivers.

She was the last surviving member of her family.

Joe Darrell Moore

Joe Darrell Moore, 60, of Bennettsville, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003.

Born in Marlboro County, Mr. Moore was a son of the late Eldon Edward and Evelyn Ivey Moore. He was a retired insurance company manager, was a member of Marlboro Masonic Lodge #88 A.F.M. and York Rites Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees.

Surviving are his wife, Patsy Lackey Moore of Bennettsville; two daughters, Ann Moore (Rich) Payne of Columbia, and Jody Moore (Kai) Yeh of Charleston; a brother, Eldon (Mary Ellen) Moore II of Cheraw; a sister, Betty (Joe) Usher of Cheraw; his stepmother, Ella Moore of Bennettsville; three and grandchildren, David Payne, Laura Payne and Sam Payne.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mrs. Polson was a daughter of the late Jessie Duncan and Mattie Roscoe Campbell. She was a homemaker and member of Patrick Presbyterian Church. She was married to the late Stanley G. Polson, who died Dec. 30, 2003, for 50 years.

Martha Mae Hillian Bowles, 75, of Cheraw, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mrs. Bowles was a daughter of the late the Rev. Rufus A. and Maggie Spencer Hillian. She attended Coulter Academy and graduated from Chesterfield Colored High School. While in her late teens, Mrs. Bowles moved to Baltimore, Mary., where she worked as a nursing assistant for John Hopkins Hospital and as a podiatrist assistant to Dr. Goldberg. She retired from St. Agnes Hospital as a nursing assistant in the nursery.

Mrs. Bowles was a member of New Shiloh Baptist Church and was active in several clubs and boards under the leadership of the Revs. Timothy Bodie and Harold A. Carter. When she moved to Cheraw, Mrs. Bowles attended her home church, Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church.

Surviving are a son, Darrell Langbourne (Gina) Bowles of Cheraw; a daughter, Gloria Jean Bowles of Baltimore; four brothers, Lonnie Edward (Maggie Mae) Hillian of Chesterfield, Rufus Parnell (Arziner) Hillian and Ernest Eugene Hillian all of Cheraw, and James Timothy (Edna) Hillian of Chesterfield; three sisters, Gwendolyn Hillian Turnage of Chesterfield, Marilyn Hillian (Callie) Ellison of Hamlet, N.C., and Joyce Hillian (LeRoy) Funderburk of Charlotte, N.C.; two aunts, Utensie Hillian of Newburg, N.Y., and Roseanna Hillian of Cheraw; three grandchildren, Yale, Chase and Miracle; and a number of other family and friends.

A member of First Baptist Church and the Millon Tucker Sunday School Class, Mr. Caldwell was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served in World War II.

Born in Sumter County, Mr. Tallon was a son of the late Paul Kistler and Annie Laurie Gopfert Tallon. He served in the United States Army. While in the Army, he was a member of the last division of the Horse Cavalry. Mr. Tallon was a member of Lamar First Baptist Church where he taught the Senior Citizens Men's Class #1. Mr. Tallon worked for the South Carolina Highway Department for many years before retiring in 1971. After his retirement, he became a teacher and taught auto mechanics at Darlington Career Center, Chesterfield-Marlboro Technical College and Florence-Darlington Technical College. He was also a member of Lamar American Legion Post #94.

Surviving are a son, James Bradley (Penny) Tallon Jr. of Lynchburg; two daughters, Sara Ann (Charles) Caban of Marietta, Ga., and Miriam (Bradley) Swiler of Florence; a brother, William G. (Mary) Tallon of Elgin; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded by his wife of 62 years, Meda Randolph Tallon.

She was married to the late Herbert Truesdale, of Westville, for over 55 years.

Surviving are two daughters, Diane T. McLaughlin of Columbia, and Geri T. Stanley of Irmo; a son, E. Lloyd Truesdale of Charlotte, N.C.; three grandchildren, Dina C. Whatley of Dallas, Texas, Chesnee M. (David) Murdock of Woodway, Texas, and Raven L. McLaughlin of Greenville; two great-grandchildren, Wemberly Murdock and Channing Murdock of Woodway; two brothers, Isaac (Peggy) Sullivan of Kershaw, and Ralph (Eddie) Sullivan of Lancaster; five sisters, Clarine S. (Judson) Ogburn and Cora L. (William) Newman all of Bethune, Grace Hoffstein of Lake City, Helen S. (Donnie) Horton of Jefferson, and Loretta S. Belk of Kershaw; and loving friend, Howard Barnes.

Born in Marlboro County, Mrs. Armond was a daughter of the late Chancie Davis and Ada Bell Johnson Davis Wright. She had been a member of Pee Dee Union Baptist Church, the Rugged Cross Baptist Church and Crossover Baptist Church in Brooklyn, N.Y. When she retired after 23 years of service to ArrowLock Inc., she returned to Cheraw and rejoined Pee Dee Union Baptist Church. Mrs. Armond attended the public schools of Chesterfield County, graduating from Long High School in 1960. She also graduated from Wilfred Academy of Beauty in Brooklyn as a licensed cosmetologist.

Surviving are her husband of 30 years, Walter; two sons, Mark Vincent and Martell Vernard; a daughter, Michelle Valarie; four sisters, Elease (Matthew) Miller, Arie (George) Goldson, Oralee (Samuel) Pitts, Susan (Alender) Gerald; a brother, Henry (Delilah) Johnson; six grandchildren Mark II, Marie, Martell II, Marquita, Kiera and Jamaisa; and a number of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Robert Lee Davis, Edward Lee Davis, Sumter Bass, Robert Short and Johnny Johnson; and two sisters, Ruth Ingram and Mabel Wright.

Bessie Mae Brown Dogans, 73, of Cheraw, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004.

Born in McBee, Mrs. Dogans was a daughter of the late Beaulah Knox Brown Thompson and the late Charlie Brown Sr., and was married to the late Ernest Dogans. She lived in Hartford, Con., for 25 years and attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church and sang in the Booster Choir. She moved to Cheraw and joined Pee Dee Union Baptist Church where she served as President of the Senior Choir and assistant to the Senior Missionary Society, Senior

Circle and Senior Circle Choir. She was also a member of the Coulter Alumni.

Surviving are two daughters, Lois Carolyn (Ernest L.) Kenney of East Hartford, Con., and Rhonda (Wilton) Woolcock of Snellville, Ga.; two sons, Charles Julius Raymond (Jean M.) Dogans of Cheraw, and James Franklin (Becky) Brown of West Windsor, Con.; two brothers, Herbert Brown of Dillon, and Charlie Brown Jr. of Oakland, Cal.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.

He attended Shady Grove Elementary School and Coosa County Training School in Cottage Grove, Ala. He was a member of Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary M. Robinson Lauderdale; three sons, Terry Bittle, Emmanuel (Marion) Lauderdale and Marvin (Lametric) Lauderdale; two daughters, Patricia (Maurice) Robinson and Renarda Lauderdale; three sisters, Hattie B. Leverette, Brenda Wilson and Juliett (James) Cunningham, all of Rockford, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Janet Lauderdale of Cleveland, Ohio; 20 grandchildren; six nephews; 11 nieces; and a host of other family and friends.

Born in Pageland, Mr. Lowery was a son of the late Thomas Frank and Roma Harriett Langley Lowery. He had retired from Dupont Company after 32 years of service. He was a United States Navy veteran, a Boatswain's Mate First Class, having served in the South Pacific during World War II. He also served in seven major campaigns, including Okinawa and Guadalcanal. He was a Mason and a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Martha Rankin Lowery of the home; two daughters, Sherry Smith of Spartanburg, Tammy (Tony) Bishop of Simpsonville; a son, Randy Lowery of Bethune; five grandchildren, Gregg Lowery of Bethune, Chris (Trish) Smith of Spartanburg, Grant Smith of Spartanburg, and Charlie Bishop and Jamie Bishop both of Simpsonville; six sisters, Alma Catoe of Niceville, Fla., Atha Lee Mangum of Columbia, Kathryn McLemore of Taylors, Jerry L. Carolyn Nathan B. Serveance, 83, of Columbia, has died.

Born in Gadsden, Mrs. Severance was a daughter of the late Peter and Amy Tucker Nathan, and was the widow of Wesley Serveance. She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, and received a B.S. degree from South Carolina State College. She was a public school teacher in the Chesterfield County School District, and retired as an LPN from Bergin Pines Hospital, Paramus, N.J., after 30 years. She was later employed by the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Serveance was a member of Union Baptist Church, the Missionary Society, a leader of the Friendship Circle, president of the Women's Home Aide Society #99, and sang in the Jubilee Choir.

Surviving are two sons, Howard N. (Carolyn) Brown of Charleston, and Floyd E. (Annette) Brown; three daughters, Arthurine Brown-Rice, Wanda B. (Robert J.) Hampton and Arlene C. Serveance of Columbia; a sister, Ivory Lee Nathan; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Born in Rowland, N.C., Mrs. Stubbs was a daughter of Hybert Washington Powell and Elizabeth Daniel Leith, and was married to Arthur B. "Bun" Stubbs who died in 1964. Coming to Cheraw from Lake View, Mrs. Stubbs spent more than 80 years in Cheraw. She was the former owner of Stubbs Funeral Home and the oldest member of First United Methodist Church of Cheraw.

Surviving are two sons, Bernard Stubbs and Eddie Stubbs both of Cheraw; a daughter, Frances Puryear of Elizabeth City, N.C.; eight grand-children; and 14 great-grandchildren.

John Edward Gainey

John Edward Gainey, 55, of Patrick, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24 from Edwards Chapel Baptist Church with the Revs. Ed Griggs and Johnny Tyner officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Born in Darlington County, Mr. Gainey was a son of the late Isaac and Sarah Lelia Campbell Gainey. He was a member of Edwards Chapel Baptist Church.

Surviving are his companion, Patsy Gilbert of Patrick; six sisters, Ellen Griggs of Hartsville, Ann (Robert) Dixon of Patrick, Margaret Tyner of Patrick, Maebelle Freeman of Hartsville, Roberta Player of Hartsville, and Faye (Darryl) Brooms of Hartsville; two brothers, Ernest (Frances) Gainey of Patrick, Isaac (Patty) Gainey of Patrick; eight nephews; and 14 nieces.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Gainey and Furman Gainey; and a sister, Alice Register.

Lillie Mae Cotton Dewitt James

Lillie Mae Cotton Dewitt James, 82, of Cheraw, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004 at Chesterfield Convalescent Center.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25 from Bethel Baptist Church. Burial followed in church cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mrs. James was a daughter of the late Doc and Lillie Short Cotton, and the widow of Dozier James. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where she served as Missionary President, Senior Choir President, Sunday School Superintendent and as a member of the Pastor's Aid. Mrs. James was also a member of Joint Stock Lodge #503 in the Cash Community.

Surviving are five children, Geneva (Allen) Carroll of society Hill, Doris (David) Allen of Philadelphia, Penn., Daphne (Horace) Smith of Irmo, Kelvin (Donna) James of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Darryl James of Society Hill; a daughter-in-law, Gloria Meriman of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Julius Cotton of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Rose Cotton of Columbus, Ohio, and Pearl Cotton of Society Hill; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a great-great-grand-child; and a number of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Dewitt.

Evelyn Eckhardt Lambert

Evelyn Eckhardt Lambert, 87, of Woodstock, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004.

A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27 from Woodstock United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to Chesterfield County Hospice, the Red Bird Mission Fund at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Chesterfield; or a charity of one's choice.

Born in Hamburg, Va., Mrs. Lambert was a daughter of John F. and Vertie E. Eckhardt. She was a 1934 graduate of Madison College and taught in the public schools of Shenandoah County, Va. She also taught Weekday Religious Education classes for many years in the county. She was a homemaker and active in many capacities at Woodstock United Methodist Church, including serving as a Sunday School teacher and co-founder of a prison ministry. Mrs. Lambert was also active in the Shenandoah County Women's Republican Club.

Surviving are her husband of 68 years, William C. "Ches" Lambert of Woodstock; two sons, Jerry F. (Betty) Lambert of Woodstock, and Wayne A. "Butch" Lambert of Edinburg; a daughter, Bonnie L. Williams of Chesterfield; and three grandchildren, Dawn M. Lambert of Woodstock, and

John E. Williams and J. Chesley Williams both of Chesterfield.

She was preceded in death by five sisters and a brother.

Gwendolyn Denise McDuffie, 47, of Cheraw, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004 at Chesterfield General Hospital.

Born in Cheraw, Mrs. McDuffie was a daughter of the late Melton Ellerbe Sr. and Gladys McQueen Ellerbe. She attended Cheraw public schools and Morris College in Sumter. She was a member of Pee Dee Union Baptist Church where she served as a member of YWA (past) and Senior Missionary.

Surviving are her husband, Michael McDuffie Sr.; a son, Michael McDuffie Jr. of Columbia; a granddaughter, Yasmine Drake; two brothers, Otis (Sharon) Scott of Naples, Italy, and Melton Ellerbe Jr. of Rockingham, N.C.; three sisters, Jacqueline Ellerbe and Nelvin Ellerbe both of Cheraw, and Nancy (Marcus) Crawford of Charlotte, N.C.; four sisters-in-law, Julia Ellerbe, Diane (Clarence) Brown, Wanda (Charlie) Watts and Wendy (Timothy) Tillman; and a number of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Melody Ellerbe, and two daughters, an infant and Gwendolyn.

Roberta Evans McFarlin, 83, of Chesterfield, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004 at her home after a long illness.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mrs. McFarlin was a daughter of the late Jules and Roxie Hinson Evans. She was raised in Chesterfield County and attended the Drucilla Community School. She was a member of The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc., and was retired from Field Crest Cannon after 29 years of service.

(Noella) McFarlin all of Chesterfield; five daughters, Rosezell Ratliff and Audrey Mae (Jimmy) Ratliff all of Chesterfield, Flora Bell (Ernest) Ishmell of Cheraw, Gennette (AraLee) Sowell of Chesterfield, and Darlene McFarlin of the home; a brother, Jule L. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Nancy McLain Perdue of the home; two brothers, Charles Perdue of Wallace and Jack Kenneth Perdue of Hartsville; two sisters, Ollie Tolson and Margie Ann Perdue both of Patrick; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Carmle "Bunny" Anderson, 80, of Cheraw, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 after a lengthy illness.

Born in Augusta, Ga., Mrs. Anderson was a daughter of the late Callie and Cleo Boyd Anderson. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cheraw. Mrs. Anderson graduated from Mitchell College in Statesville, N.C., and attended Coker College. She was retired from Wachovia Bank of Cheraw.

Surviving are a sister, Eleanor Anderson of Cheraw; two nieces, Martha Holbert Gore and Jane Holbert Talbert both of Conway; and a nephew, James R. Holbert III of Colonial Heights, Va.

Lex Burch, 94, of Wadesboro, N.C., died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Burch was a son of the late Benjamin Hamer and Mary Ellen Jones Burch, and was married to the late Alice B. Burch of Jefferson. He was a retired police officer, having worked with the Wadesboro Police Department for 30 years and had worked with the Anson County Sheriff's Department. Mr. Burch was a United States Army veteran of World War II.

 

Surviving are three stepsons, Jackie Davis of Camden, James T. "Cookie" Davis of Pageland, and Ted Blackwell of Columbia; a brother, Roy F. Burch of Florence; two sisters, Harriet B. Jones of Mullins, and Helen B. Eddins of Greensboro, N.C.; seven step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Bradley Burch, Preston Burch, Jim Burch, Hamer Burch and Raymond Burch; and three sisters, Mollie Rayfield, Annie Lee Curlee and Ester Sharpe.

Homer A. Conner, 83, of Taylors, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 at Allen Bennett Hospital in Greer.

A native of Old Fort, N.C., Mr. Conner was a son of the late William and Hessie Owensby Conner. He was a retired employee of J.P. Stevens' Wallace Plant, a United States Army veteran of World War II, and a former member of North Cheraw Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Louise Waters Conner of the home; two sisters, Hattie Sides of Asheville, N.C., and Estelle Mace of Ickerd, N.C.; three sons, Carl W. Conner of Colorado Springs, Col., Robert F. Conner of Racine, Wis., and Thomas A. Conner of Naples, Fla.; two sisters, Hattie Sides of Asheville, N.C., and Estelle Mace of Granite Falls, N.C.; and 13 grandchildren.

James Bradford Gaddy, 76, of Ansonville, N.C., died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 in Rockingham Manor Nursing Home in Rockingham, N.C.

Born in Anson County, Mr. Gaddy was a son of the late Jesse David and Bessie Mae Meeks Gaddy. He was retired from McDonald Douglas-Boeing Aircraft Company as a tester for jet engines in Long Beach Calif. for 35 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II. Mr. Gaddy was also a member of the Elks Club BPOE 794 in Santa Ana, Calif.

Surviving are a daughter, Melinda J. Gaddy of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; four brothers, Furman H. Gaddy and John H. Gaddy both of Wadesboro, Clyde S. Gaddy of Lilesville, and George E. Mable Wilson Kimrey

Mable Wilson Kimrey, 91, of Cheraw, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004.

Born in Cheraw, Mrs. Kimrey was a daughter of the late Thomas and Bessie Roller Wilson. She was a former supervisor with Egmont Manufacturing Company and had retired from J.P. Stevens. Mrs. Kimrey was a member of First United Methodist Church and was married to the late Leo Kimrey.

Surviving are two sons, Milton Lee Kimrey and Tommy Linwood Kimrey both of Cheraw; a daughter, Patsy Kimrey White of Cheraw; 12 grandchildren; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jack Wilson Kimrey; a grandson, Butch Kimrey; a granddaughter, Martha Kay Kimrey; and a great-granddaughter, Tabitha Kimrey.

Anna Rosa Nell Quick Lide

Anna Rosa Nell Quick Lide, 91, of Charleston, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at the Rice Home in Columbia.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4 from Carolina Memorial Park Chapel.

A native of Marlboro County, Mrs. Lide was a daughter of the late Maude Watters Quick and Irvin Rufus Quick, and the widow of Thomas Edward Lide. She spent much of her life in Cheraw and North Charleston.

Surviving are four children, Thomas E. Lide Jr., Ray Kenneth Lide, Elizabeth Taylor Barry and Betty Walters; five sisters Veda McDevitt, Eunice Toller Bryant, Julia Bell White, Lillian Lee Stubbs and Vivian Crib; nine grandchildren Lisa McDonald, Tanya Taylor, Tom Taylor, Dianne Asbill, Joan Zoellner, Steve Lide, Pam McShea, Danna Smith and Thomas E. Lide III; and 16great-grandchildren, Jennifer Zoellner, Christina Asbill, Jonathan Asbill, Stacy Lide, Thomas Christian Lide, Caitlin McShea, Patrick McShea, Matthew McShea, Paige McShea, Cameron Smith, Andrew Smith, Lauren Lide, Emily Lide, Amber McDonald and Tyler McDonald.

She was preceded in death by four sisters Ethel James, Venus Graham, Lina Bacot, and Daisy Eudy; two brothers, Randolph Quick and W.D. Quick; and a grandson, Kevin Lide.

William Patrick "Pat" Marsh, 69, of Sumter, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Marsh was a son of Bert and Mary Ayers Marsh.

Henry McDonald Sr.

Henry McDonald Sr., 95, of Cheraw, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26 from Mt. Mary Baptist Church, Chesterfield. Burial followed in Fisher Hill Cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. McDonald was a son of the late Hanford and Clorie Johnson McDonald. He attended Fisher Hill Community School and was a member of Mt. Mary Baptist Church, Chesterfield. He was married to the late Margaret Campbell McDonald.

Surviving are three sons, Henry McDonald Jr. and Richard McDonald both of Cheraw, and Levern (Frances) McDonald of Chesterfield; a sister, Bertha Drake of Cheraw; a sister-in-law, Madeline McDonald of Cheraw; a friend, Dorsey Hancock of Cheraw; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a number of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, M.C. Johnson, and a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Ann Powe McDonald.

Scott MacDonald

Scott MacDonald, 37, of Hartsville, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2 from First Baptist Church with Dr. Bob Cline and the Rev. Charles Roberts officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery.

Born in Darlington County, Mr. MacDonald was a son of Michael E. and Kay Sparrow MacDonald. He was a 1984 graduate of Hartsville High School, member of First Baptist Church, honorary member of Hartsville Rescue Squad and had been employed with A.O. Smith in McBee.

Surviving are his wife, Gayle Parnell MacDonald of Hartsville; his parents of Hartsville; a son, Christopher Scott MacDonald of Hartsville; a daughter, Ashley Elizabeth MacDonald of Hartsville; two brothers, Ellie Harold (Sharon) MacDonald of Timmonsville, and Jesse Trent (Miriam) MacDonald of Hartsville; and several nieces and nephews.

Roberta Evans McFarlin

Roberta Evans McFarlin, 83, of Chesterfield, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004 at her home after a long illness.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 from The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mrs. McFarlin was a daughter of the late Jules and Roxie Hinson Evans, and was married to Elmo McFarlin. She attended Drucilla Community School was a member of The Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc. Mrs. McFarlin retired from Field Crest Cannon after 29 years of service.

Surviving are two sons, James (Sandra) McFarlin and James A. (Noella) McFarlin both of Chesterfield; five daughters, Rosezell Ratliff and Audrey Mae (Ernest) Ishmell of Cheraw, Gennette (AraLee) Sowell of Chesterfield, and Darlene McFarlin of the home; a brother, Jule L. (Annie) Evans of Alexandria, Va., Rosetta Green of Chesterfield, Dennie Figgens of Alexandria, and Nural Elmore of Fredericksburg, Va.; two brothers-in-law, the Rev. O.B. (Ruth) Bennette of Lancaster, and Julius Davis of Capitol Heights, Md.; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth McFarlin of Monroe, N.C., and JoAnna Evans of Alexandria; 29 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a number of other family and friends.

Donald Riffe, 80, of Pageland, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004.

Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Mr. Riffe was a son of Thames and Bertha Howard Riffe, and the widower of Madge Smith Riffe. He was a painter and World War II veteran.

Amos Nivens Sr.

Amos Nivens Sr., 66, of Chesterfield, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Nivens was a son of the late Professor Nivens and Francis Avery Nivens. He attended the public schools of Chesterfield County. Mr. Nivens was retired from the South Carolina Department of Highways and Trans-portation.

Surviving are his wife, Aletha Mae Isaac Nivens; a son, Amos (Irene) Nivens Jr.; a daughter, Wendy (Gregory) McGee; a sister, Tiny N. The Rev, Carl Lafayette Parker, 88, of Columbia, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004 after declining health.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 from Mount Hebron United Methodist Church in West Columbia with Revs. William H. Willimon, Craig Langston and Howard Sweat officiating. Burial was in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Memorial may be made to the Carl L. Parker Endowed Fund at Wofford College, or to a charity of one's choice.

The Rev. Parker was a United Methodist minister in South Carolina churches for over 50 years. Ordained in 1941, after earning degrees at Wofford College and Duke University, he served churches in Little Rock, Lydia, Little River, Ridgeland, Dillon (Main Street), Cheraw (First), Greenville (Trinity), Florence (St. Paul's), Lake City (First), Scranton, and Coward. From 1965-70, he served as district superintendent of the Marion District of the United Methodist Church.

Mr. Parker's father, W.L. Parker, and stepmother, Bessie B. Parker, were both Methodist pastors as are his son-in-law, William H. Willimon, and grandson-in-law, Craig Langston. He served as a trustee of Columbia College and was made a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Alberta S. Parker of the Agape Senior Community at Harbison in Columbia; a daughter, Patsy (Will) Willimon of Durham, N.C.; three sons, Carl (Lee) Parker of Versailles, Ky., Fred (Debby) Parker of Irmo, and Don (Louise) Parker of Lexington; four granddaughters, Keven Langston, Kim Hattler, Harriet Putman and Whitnei Jeffcoat; three grandsons, William Willimon, Eric Parker and Tyler Parker; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Langston, Parker Langston and Walker Jeffcoat; two half sisters, Sara Coulette of Pinewood, and Billie Cassady of Camden. . Alice Faye Smith Restivo, 73, of Jefferson, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004 at Union Regional Medical Center, Union, N.C.

Born in Litchfield, Conn., Mrs. Restivo was a daughter of the late Edward and Doris Britton Smith. She was a homemaker.

Idell Merritt

Idell Merritt, 84, of Cheraw, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28 from Macedonia Baptist Church. Burial followed in Foundry Hill Cemetery.

A daughter of Sam and Lula Joines, Mrs. Merritt was a member of Triumph Holiness Church where she was an ordained, licensed teacher. She was also Shepherd Mother and County Mother of Chesterfield County. Mrs. Merritt later moved her membership to Macedonia Baptist Church and was given the title of Mother of the Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Willa (Rivers) Hailey of the home; a daughter-in-law, Betty Joyce Joines of Chesterfield; four sisters, Mable Dixon, Audrey Griffith and Patricia Rivers all of Chesterfield, and Joyce Moser of Ruby; five grandsons, Tommy (Pat) Joines and Elbert Joines all of Chesterfield, Christopher (Jennifer) Joines of Camden, and Bernard (Latrice) Hailey and Dewayne (Santrice) Hailey all of Cheraw; six grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a special daughter, Patricia Covington of Ruby; and a number of other family and friends.

J. Walker Schumpert

J. Walker Schumpert, Jr., 66, of Columbia, died Friday in Lexington Medical Center.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gary Loadholt officiating. Burial followed at 4 p.m. in Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Born in Newberry, Mr. Schumpert was a son of the late John Walker and Elizabeth Reese Schumpert. He was an organ donor, a graduate of Newberry College, and a retired systems analysis. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Columbia and was a former member of the congregational council. He was also a member of Lutheran Men and the Dutch Square Walkers.

Surviving are his wife, Pawnee Counts Schumpert of the home; a daughter, Kathy Pawnee Schumpert of Cumming, Ga.; a son, Dwayne Walker Schumpert of Irmo; a brother R. David (Kathy) Schumpert of Mountville; a sister-in-law, Ruby (Earl) Deaton of Prosperity; and two nieces, Amy S. Owen of Cheraw and Laurie S. Carlton of Laurens. . Hardin Frank Sinclair

Hardin Frank Sinclair, 82, of Mt. Croghan, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004 at Chesterfield General Hospital Cheraw.

 

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24 from Gum Springs Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Sinclair was a son of the late Sam Joe and Irene Sellers Sinclair, and was married to Helen Tyson Sinclair. He attended the public schools of Chesterfield County and enlisted in the United States Army in 1942. He fought in World War II as a Duty Soldier III and was Honorably Discharged Dec. 29, 1945 in Fort Bragg, N.C. Mr. Sinclair was a member of Gum Springs Baptist Church where she served as treasurer of Saint Paul Association, treasurer of Saint Paul Union, president of the Singing Convention, superintendent of Sunday School, and was the oldest Deacon of the church. He was also a member of Saint David Lodge No 467.

Surviving are three sons, John Robert (Louise) Sinclair of Monroe, N.C., Larry Sinclair of Monroe, and Billy (Ruby) Sinclair of Marshville, N.C.; two daughters, Dora Sinclair Gladeney of Chester; and Fyrail Sinclair (Johnny) Marsh of Monroe; two granddaughters he reared in the home, Angela S. Raley of Mt. Croghan, and Iris Denise Sinclair of Chester; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a number of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Lee F. Sinclair; five brothers, George Sinclair, Major Sinclair, Adam Sinclair, Everette Sinclair and Joe Sinclair; and a sister, Sarah Nicholson.

Carmle 'Bunny' Anderson

Carmle "Bunny" Anderson, 80, of Cheraw, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 after a lengthy illness.

Born in Augusta, Ga., Mrs. Anderson was a daughter of the late Callie and Cleo Boyd Anderson. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cheraw. Mrs. Anderson graduated from Mitchell College in Statesville, N.C., and attended Coker College. She was retired from Wachovia Bank of Cheraw.

Surviving are a sister, Eleanor Anderson of Cheraw; two nieces, Martha Holbert Gore and Jane Holbert Talbert both of Conway; and a nephew, James R. Holbert III of Colonial Heights, Va.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mae Boyd Anderson Holbert, and a brother-in-law, James R. Holbert Jr.

Lex Burch

Lex Burch, 94, of Wadesboro, N.C., died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Burch was a son of the late Benjamin Hamer and Mary Ellen Jones Burch, and was married to the late Alice B. Burch of Jefferson. He was a retired police officer, having worked with the Wadesboro Police Department for 30 years and had worked with the Anson County Sheriff's Department. Mr. Burch was a United States Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are three stepsons, Jackie Davis of Camden, James T. "Cookie" Davis of Pageland, and Ted Blackwell of Columbia; a brother, Roy F. Burch of Florence; two sisters, Harriet B. Jones of Mullins, and Helen B. Eddins of Greensboro, N.C.; seven step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Bradley Burch, Preston Burch, Jim Burch, Hamer Burch and Raymond Burch; and three sisters, Mollie Rayfield, Annie Lee Curlee and Ester Sharpe.
