William Harold "Pop" Reeves

William Harold "Pop" Reeves, 67, of Bennettsville died Wednesday, March 19, 2003. A funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 22 from Faith Fellowship Church. Burial followed in Chavis Cemetery in Bennettsville.

Born May 5, 1935, in Pickens, Mr. Reeves was a son of Roy Benjamin Reeves and Ruth Haynes Reeves. He was a retired empolyee of Galey and Lord where he worked for 25 years. He was a member of Evenezer United Methodist Church and the Woodmen of the World, both in Bennettsville.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Reeves; two sons, Harold B. Reeves and Charles B. Reeves, both of Bennetts-ville; three daughters, Shirley Moore Caulder of Clio, Katherine Moore Lewellen and Sandy R. Holloway, both of Bennettsville; one brother, Lt. James Reeves (ret.) of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Emily Bowers and Louise Powers, both of Pickens; seven grandchildren; three great-grand-children; two step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grand-children. Boyd Gainey

Boyd Gainey, 63, of Society Hill died Monday, March 17, 2003. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 20 from Norton Funeral Home Chapel in Hartsville. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Park.

Born in Darlington County, Mr. Gainey was a son of the late Elwood E. and Lizzie Davis Gainey.

Surviving are two sons, Brian Gainey of Society Hill and Eric Gainey of Chesterfield; one stepson, Larry Tyndall of Bennettsville; two daughters, Barbara Gaskins of Chesterfield and Sandra Jones of Hartsville; one sister, Sophia Fraley of Richfield, N.C.; and three brothers, Kenny Gainey of Concord, N.C., Otis Gainey of Society Hill and Aaron Tucker of Albermarle, N.C.

Pat Gertrude Jordan Plyler

Pat Gerturde Jordan Plyler, 74, of Pageland died Tuesday, March 18, 2003. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 20 from Smyrna Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mrs. Plyler was a daughter of the late Clarence and Mamie Jordan. She was a retired employee of Chesterfield Yarn Mill and a member of Smyrna Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Harry Eugene Plyler of the home; three sons, Ralph (Donna) Gainey of Ruby, Kim (Jan) Plyler of Lancaster and Dale (Amanda) Plyler of Pageland; one daughter, Joyce Elaine (Jimmy) Gregory of Ruby; one brother, Gurney Jordan of Pageland; four sisters, Onie Mae Jenkins, Katie Lee Simpson and Emma Jean West, all of Pageland, and Bonnie Lindsey of Mt. Croghan; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grand-children.

Frank Marshall Burch

Frank Marshall Burch, 82, of Dillon died Wednesday, March 19, 2003. A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 21 in Chesterfield Cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield, Mr. Burch was a son of the late Robert Huntly Burch Sr. and Bernice Threadgill Burch. He was a retired plywood pland operator and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are two sons, Frank M. (Emily) Burch Jr. of Wendell, N.C., and Joseph Burch of Monroe, N.C.; two daughters, Eleanor Burch (Dan) Brooks of Norwood, N.C., and Mary Burch (Robert) Laton of Sanford, N.C.; one brother, Bill Burch of Chesterfield; one sister, Laura B. Hunt of Chesterfield; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Shane Brooks; two brothers; and three sisters.

Myra Jones Fincher

Myra Jones Fincher, 88 of Cheraw died Thursday, March 20, 2003. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 22 from First Baptist Church in Cheraw.

Born in Ft. Worth, Texas, Mrs. Fincher was a daughter of the late Edward Oscar Jones and Elsia May Yorty Jones Stulting. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Cheraw where she served as the teacher for the Belle Hurt Sunday School Class and worked with children's ministires. She was a volunteer with Chesterfield General Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing.

Surviving are one son, Jim Fincher of Cheraw; one daughter, Jean Young of Cheraw; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, O. A. Fincher.

Bertha Chapman Tilley

Bertha Chapman Tilley, 91 of Cheraw died Thursday, March 20, 2003. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 23 from Cash Baptist Church. Burial followed in Welsh Neck Baptist Church Cemetery.

Born in the Cash Community, Mrs. Tilley was a daughter of the late Clarence Calvin Chapman, a former magistrate of Chesterfield County, and Mayme Kimrey Chapman. She was retired from Sacony after 35 years of service and was a charter member of Cash Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son, James H. (Helen) Tilley of Cheraw; two daughters, Linda (the Rev. Walter) Adams of Maiden, N.C., and Faye Terry of Cheraw; two sister, Virginia Griggs of Hartsville and Mable Lavee of Society Hill; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Avery Tilley.

Marion James Howard

Marion James Howard, 23, of Cheraw died Sunday, March 16, 2003. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 22 from New Hope Church of God. Burial followed in St. James Cemetery.

Born June 9, 1979, in Chesterfield County, Mr. Howard was a son of Kathy Ann Howard. He attended public school in Chesterfield County and was a member of New Hope Church of God iin Cash.

Surviving are his mother of Cheraw; two brothers, Billy Jack Howard of Laurinburg, N.C., and Billy Ingram Jr. of Cheraw; three sisters, Pam Ingram and Tonya Ingram, all of Cheraw; his grandmother, Joretta Howard; five aunts; one uncle; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Lee Thera Fields

Lee Thera Field, 66, died Sunday, March 16, 2003. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 23 from Mt. Olive Baptist

Born Sept. 22, 1936, in Chesterfield County, Mrs. Fields was a daughter of the late Lex and Dotsie Mae McQueen Bryant. She was a cook at J & K Grill for many years.

Surviving are nine daughters, Francine Blanton of Oxen Hills, Md., Dora Lee Fields, Dorothy (Jerome) Shaw, Teresa Fields, Jessie (Larry) Melton, Julie (Jimmy) Cue, Claretha (Dennis) Gaskins, Betty Jean Fields and Aletha Fields, all of Cheraw; four sons, George Fields and John M. Cooks, both of Cheraw, Tommy Fields of Washington, D.C., and John A. (Linda Parker) Cooks of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Mary Jane Cooks of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two stepsons, Henry T. Cooks and Willie J. Cooks, both of Cheraw; three brothers, Lex R. Bryant of Patrick, Jimmie Sanders and Robert Sanders, both of Brooklyn; six sisters, Porchie L. Crawford of Lancaster, Martha Marshall of Patrick, Shirley Young, Fredde M. Sanders, Carolyn Sanders and Linda Sanders, all of Brooklyn; 28 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hayward C. Fields; two brothers, William Sanders and Freddie Sanders; and one sister, Moela Bryant.

Melissa Diane Laundreaux Rivers

Melissa Diane Laundreaux Rivers, 34, of Cheraw died Friday, March 21, 2003. A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Monday, March 24 from Kiser Funeral Home Chapel in Cheraw.

Born in Cheraw, Mrs. Rivers was a daughter of Joseph L. Laundreaux and Francis Diane Driggers of Cheraw.

Surviving are her parents; one grandmother, Bonnie B. Driggers of Florence; one grandfather, Victor Carl Laundreaux of Cheraw; one son, Justin C. Rivers of Cheraw; one daughter Amilynn Nicole Rivers of Cheraw; two brothers, Joseph L. Laundreaux Jr. and Anthony Brice Driggers, both of Cheraw; and one sister, Mary Diane Chapman of Cheraw.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, James F. Driggers; and her grandmother, Isabella Hannah Laundreaux.

Elizabeth Ann Chavis "Poochie" Grooms

Elizabeth Ann Chavis "Poochie" Grooms, 58, of Cheraw died Sunday, March 23, 2003. A funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 25 from Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Bay Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Born in Rockingham, N.C., Mrs. Grooms was a daughter of the late William Edward and Geraldine Blue Chavis. She was a retired sewing machine operator.

Surviving are her husband, Walter Ray Grooms of the home; one son, Walter R. (April) Grooms Jr. of Bennettsville; two grandchildren, Johnathon Grooms and Heather Grooms; one brother, William Chavis of Columbia; and one sister, Jewel Powell of Columbia.

Annie Lola McLain Evans

Annie Lola McLain Evans, 79, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 23 from St. James AME Zion Church in Chesterfield. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Evans was a daughter of the late Boyd and Clara Mumford McLain. She attended the Chesterfield County public school system. She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Patrick but later joined St. James AME Zion Church where she served as a deaconess, class leader and missionary worker. She was employed with Chesterfield County School System for 15 years. She was a homemaker and skilled gardner.

Surviving are her children, Clero (Miranda) Evans of Columbia, James Milton (Ruther L.) Evans, Burdette Evans and Barbara (Bennie) Watson, all of Chesterfield, and Betty (Michael) Dash of Savannah, Ga.; two sisters, Louise Tarlton and Ethelean Merriman; two aunts; seven sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Evans; one sister; and four brothers.

Tecola Rivers

Tecola Rivers, 89, of Hartsville died Monday, March 24, 2003. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 24 from Brown-Pennington-Atkins Chapel. Burial followed in Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Born in Columbia, Mrs. Rivers was a daughter of the late Virgil and Annie Elizabeth Holley. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist church.

Surviving are one son, Stewart L. (Joan) Rivers of Greenville; one daughter, Alice (Gene) Welborn of Cheraw; one brother, Henry Holley of Clearwater, Fla.; one sister, Mary Johnson of Clinton; nine grand-children; 14 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, William R. Rivers.

Lindsey Eugene Parks

Lindsey Eugene Parks, 72, of Morrow, Ga., died Sunday, March 23, 2003. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. at Friendship United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Laurinburg, N.C., Mr. Parks was a son of the late John Peter and Maggie Jacobs Parks, He was a U.S. veteran and a retired employee of Globe Ticket Company.
Surviving are his wife, Lois Smith Parks of the home; two sons, Donald Parks of Morrow and James Parks of Jefferson, Ga.; three daughters, Joyce Shelton of Forest Park, Ga., Debbie Tucker of Cumming, Ga., and Melissa Parks of Jonesboro, Ga.; two brothers,
Lee Parks of Patrick and Johnny Parks of Morven, N.C.; one sister, Betty Lou Freeman of Chesterfield; and six grandchildren.

Ruby Caulder Crenshaw

Born in Rockingham, N.C., Mrs. Crenshaw was a daughter of the late Lawrence Edward and Mary Brigman Caulder. She was a member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Randolph H. Crenshaw of the home; two sons, Virgil C. (Mildred) Crenshaw of Cheraw and Tony M. (Gloria) Crenshaw of Patrick; three daughters, Bonnie C. (Bobby) Morris of Cheraw, Joyce C. (Tom) Smith and Gail C. Paul both of Patrick; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Caulder and Lawrence E. Caulder Jr.; and one sister, Ruth C. Perkins.

Walter Way Landon

Walter Way Landon, 75, of Winter Haven, Fla., died Friday, March 28, 2003. A graveside service with military honors was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 1 in Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.

Born Feb. 16, 1928, in Chesterfield, Mr. Landon was a son of the late John and Rillie Landon. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and AARP. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and in the Army Reserves and was a member of the American Legion Post 8 of Winter Haven. He loved to fish, and his two grandchildren were the joy of his life.
Surviving are his wife, Margie Rae Rivers Landon of Winter Haven; one daughter, Brenda Jane Cole of Lakeland, Fla.; two sons, Randy W. Landon and Petey Salyina, both of Winter Haven; one sister, Ethel Faulkenberry of Chesterfield; one grandson, Johnny Cole of Tallahassee, Fla.; and one granddaughter, Crystal Landon of Winter Haven.

Marguerite T. Teal

Marguerite T. Teal, 90, of Cheraw die Thursday, March 27, 2003. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 29 from Kiser Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Old Saint David's Cemetery.

Born in Cheraw, Mrs. Teal was a daughter of the late Malcolm Chestine and Ida Jeanette Stogner Thomas. She was employed with Wannamaker Oil Company for 24 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Cheraw where she attended the Belle Hurt Sunday School Circle until her failing health prevented her from doing so. She loved to cross stitch, knit and work in her flower garden.

Surviving are on sister, Sara T. (Tom) Stanton of Florence; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Thomas of Cheraw; and a number of nieces and nephews.

David Lee Hughes

David Lee Hughes, 64, of Weiterstadt, Germany, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003. A funeral service was held Wednesday, March 12 from First Baptist Church in Farrell, Pa.


Born June 20, 1938, in Cheraw, Mr. Hughes was a son of Ellen Ford Hughes and the late David Hughes Jr. He was employed as a meat cutter with Rhein Main Air Base in Frankfort, Germany. He was recognized in 1989 for 30 years of service to the U.S. government. He was a member of Rose Chapel at Rhein Main Air Base. He was a U.S. Army and Air Force veteran having served in the military police, in the Vietnam War and in an extended term of service overseas.


Surviving are his mother of Farrell; his wife, Kea Pun Hughes of South Korea; two daughters, Eleanor Riley of Weiterstadt and Denise Riley of Darmstadt, Germany; one son, David Riley of Weiterstadt; four sisters, Ella Mae Hargrette, Mary Ellen and Diane Hughes, all of Farrell, and Roberta (Jimmie) Sellers of Warren, Ohio; four brothers, Wilbert (Shirley) Hughes of Youngstown, Ohio, Robert Hughes, Albert Hughes and Lawrence (Tracy) Hughes, all of Farrell; and a host of other family and friends.

Franklin E. Thomas

Franklin E. Thomas, 42, of Wallace died Monday, March 31, 2003. A funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 3 from Kiser Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Born in Bennettsville, Mr. Thomas was a son of Simon E. and Peggy Ann Sheppard Thomas of Bennettsville. He loved fishing, antiquing, travel and spending time with his family.
Surviving are his parents; his wife, Renee Brown Thomas of Wallace; one son, Matthew C. Thomas of Wallace; four brothers, James A. Thomas, Teddie Thomas and Eddie Thomas, all of Columbia, and John R. Thomas of Wallace; and one grandmother, Lizzie Rodgers of Bennettsville.


He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sandra Greenwood Thomas, and one brother, Simon Robert "Robbie" Thomas.

Born in Patrick, Mrs. Ford was a daughter of Sarah Nezzie Polson Davis of Cheraw and the late Marion Bruce Davis. She was a former supervisor with Skyline Manufacturing and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Johns Island.


Surviving are his mother; one son, Tony E. (Cookie) Davis of Cheraw; two stepsons, Clifton Ford Jr. of Johns Island and Banyon Ford of Hollywood; six brothers, Vernon D. (Nellie) Davis, Charles F. Davis, Kenneth M. (Pat) Davis and Donnie W. Davis, all of Cheraw, James B. (Delane) Davis of Darlington and Jakie (Anna) Davis of Georgetown; and one sister, Margaret (Parker) Cook of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren, Hope Davis and Scott Davis; five step-grandchildren; one sister-in-law; and three brothers-in-law.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. "Bobby" Ford Sr.; one brother, Tommie Davis; and two sisters, Lottie Oswald and Louise Ford.

Reatha Brock English

Born Aug. 30, 1944, Mrs. English was a daughter of the late Therrell and Annie Copeland Brock. She was an employee of Marlboro Mechanical and Piping in Wallace. She was a dedicated member of Cash Baptist Church where she served in several different positions.


Surviving are her husband, Tommy English of the home; one daughter, Melissa Vick (Gene) Bailey of Cheraw; three stepdaughters, Maureen (Joe) Williams of Chesterfield, Angela (Marshall) Dent of Florence, and Susie (Jamie) Blackburn of Lexington; one stepson, Tommy C. English of Columbia; three brothers, Richard Brock of Florence, Harold Brock of Durham, N.C. and Jerry Brock of Lexington; two sisters, Sue Adams of Cheraw, and Arlene King of Asheville, N.C.; seven step-grandchildren; and a number of other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Dean Brock.

Heather Sittley Parmelee

Heather Sittley Parmelee, 36, of Pageland died Monday, March 31, 2003. A funeral service was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3 from Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel.
Born in Passaic, N.J., Mrs. Parmelee was a daughter of John Stephen Sittley and Diane Louise Tworsky Sittley. She was a medical office assistant.


Surviving are her parents; one son, Kyle Spivey of Ruby; one daughter, Kayla Spivey of Ruby; one brother, John W. Sittley of Ruby; and one sister, Lanie Liberman of Baltimore, Md.

Born March 5, 1976, in Charlotte, N.C., Mr. Funderburk was a son of Debra Crawford and the late Cornell Blakeney and a step-son of Lloyd Crawford of Pageland. He was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church and a graduate of Central High School in Pageland.


Surviving are his mother and stepfather of Pageland; one daughter, Jassmin Elizabeth Funderburk of Charlotte; one son, LaVonte Deon Louallen of Pageland; one sister, Markia Shanta Crawford; two brothers, Markee Donta Crawford and Kevin Lloyd Crawford; one grandfather, Coyt Buck Funderburk of Pageland; a fiancee, Sheketa Blakeney; five uncles; eight aunts; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Bennie Lou Austin Blakeney

Bennie "Mother" Lou Austin Blakeney, 58, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5 from New Arising Ministries in Jefferson. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


Born Aug. 6, 1944, in Chesterfield County, Mrs. Blakeney was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ben Austin. She was a founder and member of New Arising Ministries where she served as missionary and food bank director.


Surviving are two children, Recole and Bridgett Miller; three sister, Wilma Austin, Annie Austin and Yvonne (Louis) McBride; three brothers, Randy (Peggy) Austin, Gerald (Mavis) Austin and Roy (Bobbie) Austin, all of Pageland; nine sisters-in-law; eight brothers-in-law; two aunts; and a host of other relatives and friends.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben Blakeney.

John A. Crowley

John A. Crowley, 74, of Hartsville died Thursday, April 3, 2003. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6 from Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Patrick Cemetery.


Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Crowley was a son of the late Fencless Mormon and Minnie Boan Crowley. He was a retired truck driver.


Surviving are one son, John David (Kim) Crowley of Mocksville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Jason Crowley, Casey Crowley, and Joshua Crowley; two brothers, Kenneth T. Crowley of Ladson and J.C. Crowley of Camden; and three sisters, Evelyn C. McLain of Patrick, Janie C. Young of Camden and Cornelia C. Crenshaw of Hartsville.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hildreth Crowley and Jesse Lee Crowley.

Thurman James Sanders

Thurman James Sanders, 87, of Cheraw died Thursday, March 27, 2003. A funeral service was held Wednesdy, April 2 from Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church in Cheraw.


Born Nov. 21, 1915, in Cheraw, Mr. Sanders was a son of the late Samuel and Maggie Moore Sanders. He earned a high school diploma from Clinton Junior Colledge and received his bachelor's from Livingston College in 1944. He received his master's in biology from North Carolina College (now North Carolina Central University) in Durham, N.C. He retired in 1985 from the Marlboro County School System with 43 years of service. He served in many church and civic activities including Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity (Upsilon Chapter), the Livingston College Alumni Association, the NAACP, the Sanctorum Lodge No. 25, Free & Accepted Masons (PHA), the Eureka Chapter No. 33 and Royal Arch Masons. He was chairman of the Trustee Board for Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Natalie S. France of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mertice S. (Charles) Williams of Kernersville, N.C., and LaSaunya S. (Derrick) Smith of Stafford, Va.; four grandchildren, Philise Zellen, Camillia and Alexia; one brother, the Rev. George C. Sanders S. of Cheraw; four sister, Lucy S. Merriman Georgiana S. (Hazle) Knight, Queen Ester S. Williams, all of Cheraw, and the Rev. Hattie S. (Robert) Jackson of Washington, D.C.; one aunt; one uncle; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Zellen Robinson, and four brothers, Earl William Sanders, Charlie Sanders, Elijah Sanders and Samuel E. Sanders.

She was a retired employee of Carolina National Bank with over 45 years of service and was a charter board member of Chesterfield County Mental Retardation Board (now known as Chesterfield County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs) where she served as secretary/treasurer.

She was a member of Westside Baptist Church, where she served as former pianist and Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed gardening, decorating and taking care of her feline friends.


Surviving are her mother of Cheraw; one brother, Archie Wayne (Paula) Teal of Cheraw; three sisters, Barbara T. (the Rev. Jerry) Brunson of Saluda, Carolyn T. (Brian) Mickleberry of Cheraw and Jayne T. Born June 30, 1927, in Florence County, Mrs. Walden was a son of Washington Walden and Elmina Hendrix Walden. He served as a translator in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a retired plumber, a truck driver for Associated Transport and operator of Walden's Mobile Home Service.


Surviving are his wife, Mildred Bazzle Walden of the home; one son, James A. Walden of Lexington, N.C.; two daughters, Elmina W. Yancey of Cheraw and Sheilah W. Cusaac of Orlando, Fla.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Born Oct. 8, 1920, in Cheraw, Mrs. Flowers was a daughter of the late Kattie Miller Avery and Governor A. Avery. She was educated in the Chesterfield County public school system and a former member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She later joined Holy Trinity Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess, worked with the missionary group, the Friendship Club and the senior choir. She and her husband were owners of Flowers TV Repair Shop for 31 years.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Andrew Flowers; one sister, Essie Bell

James P. Wallace

James P. Wallace, 83, of Oviedo, Fla., died Saturday, April 12, 2003. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 15 from First Baptist Church of Oviedo. Burial with military honors followed in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.

Born in Chesterfield, Mr. Wallace moved to Florida in 1996. He was a retired comercial pilot for Southern Air Transport and Eastern Airlines. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the 87th Infantry and in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Oviedo, Fla., the Chesterfield Masonic Lodge No. 220 and The American Legion Post 74.


Surviving are his wife, Katherine Wallace of Oviedo; two sons, Larry W. Wallace of Wellington, Fla., and James David Wallace of Blythewood; two daughters, Anne Lynch of Orlando, Fla., and Edith Barton of Brooksville, Fla.; one brother, Dozier F. Born March 19, 1915, in McColl, Mrs. Huntley was a daughter of the late Wade Hampton and Judith Ann Tatum Fletcher. She was a graduate of Greensboro College and former partner/co-owner of Ladied Apparel, Inc. (formerly known as Pauline Moore's). She was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Church Women and was a treasurer of the Susan McIver Chapter for many years. She enjoyed gardening, needlework, bridge, reading and cooking. She is remembered for her pulled butter mints, a recipe she has passed on to her children.


Surviving are one daughter, Ann (Michael T.) Malone of Charleston; one son, Preston B. (Nell B.) Huntley Jr. of Winnsboro; six grandchildren; four great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.


She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Preston Huntley Sr., and a brother, Frank Tatum Fletcher.

Julia Margaret Fletcher Huntley, 88, of Cheraw died Sunday, April 20, 2003. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23 from St. David's Episcopal Church in Cheraw. Burial followed in Old St. David's Cemetery.

Born March 19, 1915, in McColl, Mrs. Huntley was a daughter of the late Wade Hampton and Judith Ann Tatum Fletcher. She was a graduate of Greensboro College and former partner/co-owner of Ladies Apparel, Inc. (formerly know as Pauline Moore's). She was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Church Women and was a treasurer of the Susan McIver Chapter for many years. She enjoyed gardening, needlework, bridge, reading and cooking. She is remembered for her pulled butter mints, a recipe she has passed on to her children.


Surviving are one daughter, Ann (Michael T.) Malone of Charleston; one son, Preston B. (Nell B.) Huntley Jr. of Winnsboro; six grandchildren; four great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Preston Huntley Sr., and a brother, Frank Tatum Fletcher.

Born in Jefferson, Mrs. Crowley was a daughter of the late Leander and Newell Johnson Roberts. She was a homemaker and a member of Westside Baptist Church.


Surviving are one son, James Roberts of West Columbia; two grandchildren, Judy Purvis of Cheraw and Pam Roberts of West Columbia; two great-grandchildren, Sherry Jackson of Ruby and Mark Purvis of Wallace; and four great-great-grandchildren, Melany Polson and Blake Jackson, both of Ruby, and Mark Purvis Jr. and Emily Purvis, both of Wallace.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Wesley Crowley.

Joseph Tyler, 60, of Cheraw died Wednesday, April 10, 2003. A funeral service was held Tuesday, April 22, from Pentecostal Assembly Holiness Church. Burial followed in St. Joseph's Cemetery.


Born March 30, 1943, in Lakeland, Fla., Mr. Tyler was a son of the late James and Darna Silas Tyler. He graduated from Rochelle Senior High School in Lakeland in 1962 and received an associate's from Kittrell College in Kittrell, N.C., in 1965. He worked as a brick mason in Paterson, N.J., until he moved to Cheraw.


Surviving are his companion, Fannie J. Davis; four children, Patrick D. Tyler of Lakeland, Fla., Juan Johnson of Cheraw, Joseph Tyler Johnson of Atlanta, Ga., and Juanita Johnson-Drake of Columbia; two stepdaughters, Anjenette Johnson of Columbia and Gail (Wayne) Chapman of Cheraw; one sister, Martha Bouchee of Lakeland; nine grandchildren, ShaQuan Johnson and DeJuan Johnson, both of Cheraw, Kaylin

Johnson, Jasmine Johnson and N'yda Johnson, all of Jacksonville, Fla., Jerell Drake of Columbia, Joseph Murphy, Asia Murphy and Monique Murphy, all of Atlanta; and other relatives and friends.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa.; Mrs. Everett was a daughter of the late John Alexander and Margaret Conboy McCaw. She was retired from Suburban Trust Co. (Bank of America) Hyattsville, Md. She attended Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.


Surviving are three daughters, Mardy Jackson of Society Hill, Judy Sobek of Annapolis, Md., and Beth Carey of Gaithersburg, Md.; three sons, Anthony Wackerle and Danny Everett, both of Frederick, Md., and Steve Everett of Valdosta, Ga.; two sisters, Mary Ann Stern and Kathleen Salazar, both of Fairfax, Va.; one brother, Joe McCaw of Yulee, Fla.; 12 grand-children; and five great-grandchildren.

Ardener "Sister" Hamilton

Ardener "Sister" Hamilton, 92, died Sunday, April 20, 2003. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 25 from New Zion Baptist Church. Burial followed in Chesterfield Community Cemetery.


Born Sept. 6, 1910, in Richmond County, N.C., Mrs. Hamilton was a daughter of the late Alexander and Rosa Ingram Hamilton. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, member and president of the Usher Board, and member of the Missionary and Baptist Training Union. She was reorganized as "Mother of the Church" for her dedication to New Zion Church. She worked as a cook for Edwards Elementary School and was a participant and volunteer with the Chesterfield County Council on Aging.


Surviving are two daughters, Arnetha (Alfonzo) Curry of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Josephine Davis of College Park, Ga.; one son, Joseph (Stacey) Hamilton of Birmingham, Ala.; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.


She was preceded in death by two children.

Avis B. Love

Avis B. Love, 84, of Georgetown died Sunday, April 20, 2003. A funeral service was held Wednesday, April 23, from Georgetown Church of God. Burial followed in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens in Georgetown.


Born Sept. 11, 1918, in Marlboro County, Mrs. Love was a daughter of the late Bruce and Flora Waters Barrington.

Shelly and Becky Altman, both of Georgetown; one sister, Maggie B. William "Bill" Finch

William "Bill" Finch, 84, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003.

Born in Rome, N.Y., Mr. Finch was a son of the late Harvey and Alice Husted Finch. He was U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and the Korean Confict. He received the Bronze Star, China War Memorial Medal and the Army Distriguished Unit Badge. He was a member of the Cheraw Rotary Club, Kiwanis, Cheraw Planning and Zoning Board and a volunteer at Cheraw Intermediate School. Before moving to Cheraw, he received the Macon County Community Development Leadership Award in 1989. He was a member of the Macon County, N.C. Civil Air Patrol. He enjoyed building ship models, woodworking, history, sailing and flying.
Surviving are his wife, Sylvia A. Hinson Finch of Cheraw; two sons, William F. Finch of Longwood, Fla. and Robert Wolff of Rome, N.Y.; five daughters, Lois Biederman of Windermere, Fla., Pam Davidson of El Paso, Texas, Kimberly Manuikian of Orlando, Fla., Kimberli Wilson of Glencoe, Minn., and Shannon Stark of Fairbanks, Ala.; one brother, Harvey Finch of Sheridan, Wyo.; two sisters, Elizabeth Oakman of Winter Springs, Fla., and Margaret Finch of Auburn, Ga.,; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grand-children.

Born May 15, 1938, in Chesterfield County. Mrs. Bowen was a daughter of the late Chauncey and Mildred Gillespie Johnson. She symbolized her dedication to Jehovah by water baptism October 1975 and served with the Cheraw Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses until her death.


Surviving are her husband, Cicero J. Bowen; one daughter, Marilyn (James) Powe; one grandchild, Reginald L. Cassidy; three great-grandchildren, Tynah, Tierra, Kikki; two sisters, Sandra Little of Cheraw and Charlotte Walker of New York, N.Y.; one brother, John Lewis Little of Cheraw; three aunts; two uncles, including George Rowie of Cheraw; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Born Sept. 1, 1918, in Pageland, Mr. Michael was a son of the late Pearl Michael and Eliza Horne Michael Malloy. He was retired from the airline industry with over 25 years of service. He was a member of Pee Dee Union Baptist Church. He was an avid reader of the classics and poetry, he loved music and he took pride in being well informed.


Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Michael; one daughter, Anne Michael Gilbert of Hillsborough, N.J.; one granddaughter, Dina Laurie Gilbert of Richmond, Va.; one adopted sister, Martha Jean Robinson of Arlington, Va.; and a host of other relatives and friends.


He was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Poe Franklin, and two brothers, William F. and Benny T. Michael.

Born May 22, 1924, in Cheraw, Mrs. Morris was a daughter of the late Robert Williams and Claudia Stacks. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where she served as a member of the Stewardess Board and the United Methodist Women. She was a former employee of Cheraw Primary School, where she was a cleaning technician.


Surviving are her brother, George (Mae Lee) Cassidy Sr.; one nephew, Kenneth L. (Patsy) Cassidy; a special son, Larry Watts; a life-long friend, Janie Broomfield; two cousins, Geneva S. McDonald and Carolyn S. McIver; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Morris; one sister, Mae Francis Kenyear; and a niece and nephew.

Born May 21, 1947, in Chesterfield County, Mrs. Redfearn was a daughter of the late Harmon Miller and Tressie Crawford Miller. She was a member of Nicey Grove Baptist Church and was employed with Wampler for over 30 years.


Surviving are her husband, Hubert Redfearn; two sons, Michael Anthony (Lillie Mae) Redfearn and Hubert Leonard Redfearn, all of Pageland; seven grandchildren, Nadeia Chambers of Charlotte, N.C., Kevin Hickmon, Louwanda Hickmon, Amanda Hickmon, Anthony Redfearn, Jalesia Lowery and Shontara Chambers, all of Pageland; two great-grandchildren, Dishon Chambers of Charlotte and Shakeyvia Young of Jefferson; five sisters, Carrie Lee (Haywood) Kennedy, Mary Lee (Leroy) White, Beulah Miller (Clifford) Cabbagestalk, Alton Odessa Miller and Verna Miller, all of Pageland; five brothers, Albert (Sadie) Miller, Harvin Hogan (Bessie Kilgo) Miller, Howard Leroy Miller, Roosevelt (Mary Jane) Blakeney and Bobby (Pattie) Blakeney; two stepbrothers, Alphonzo Miller of Jefferson and James Miller of Pageland; two uncles; one aunt; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Julia Campbell McDuffie

Julia Campbell McDuffie, 93, died Friday, April 25, 2003. A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 30 from Salem Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in Chesterfield Community Cemetery.


Born Aug. 9, 1909, in Chesterfield County, Mrs. McDuffie was the wife of the late Sandy McDuffie. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess, a member of the teacher's Missionary Society Circle, treasurer and pastor's aide. She was also part of the Baptist Training Union. She was a member of Ruby Chapter No. 317 O.E.S., where she was a past Matron.


Surviving are four daughters, Frances Grimes, Esther (Woodrow) DeBrew, all of Hampton, Va., Evelyn (Ted) Davis, and Eva (Charles) Parks, all of Cheraw; three sons, Wilbert (Georgia) McDuffie, Sandy McDuffie Jr. and Willie H. McDuffie, all of Cheraw; 36 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by four children, James McDuffie, Lester McDuffie, Clara Davis and Minnie McDuffie.

Born in Cheraw, Mrs. Griggs was a daughter of Ernest and the late Eudell Mixon Matheson.


She retired as an office manager from Carolina Power & Light Company with 28 years of service. She was a member of the Pioneer Club of CP&L. She was an active member of Faith Presbyterian Church, where she was involved in the adult choir and women's ministry. (She was a former member of First Presbyterian Church.) She was a member of the Four Seasons Garden Club, the Chirstian Women's Club and a pianist for the Cheraw Kiwanis Club for many years.


Surviving are her father of Cheraw; her husband, John Wills Griggs Sr. of Cheraw; two sons, John W. (Karen Stone) Griggs Jr. of North Myrtle Beach and Tony M. (Nancy Rogers) Griggs of Cheraw; one brother, Ernest J. Matheson Jr. of Wagener; one sister, Faye Matheson Griggs of Florence; three grandchildren, John W. Griggs III, Benjamin J. Griggs, Dustin Cameron Griggs; and three step-grandchildren, Nadia, Nicole and Maggie Wetternek.

J. W. Horne, 72, of Pageland died Sunday, May 4, 2003. A graveside service was held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 7 in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Born in Pageland, Mr. Horne was a son of the late Luke and Bessie Sherrin Horne. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired logger and carpenter.

Born in Newry, Mrs. Zahler was a daughter of Helen Knox Butts and the late Stephen William Butts. She was a member of North Conway Baptist Church, where whe was a former Sunday school teacher. She was a graduate of Seneca High School and the Baptist School of Nursing in Columbia. She was a former employee of Conway Nursing Center Hospital and McLeod Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Zahler taught nursing at the Conway High School of Practical Nursing at the Aynor/Conway Career Center. She started the Conway Sundancers Western Square Dance Club and was a leader of Girl Scout Troop 197 for many years. She was involved with Boy Scout Troop 899, The American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Zahler was a cancer survivor.


Surviving, in addition to her mother of Newry, are her husband, Edwin C. Shelton English Sr., 75, of Wallace, died Tuesday, May 6, 2003. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 9 from Kiser Funeral Home. Committal was in New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Born in Marlboro County, Mr. English was a son of the late William Aubry and Viola Hubbard English. He was a Shriner, a Mason and a member of Scottish Rites. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, Wallace.

Surviving are his wife, Mary E. Lloyd English of Wallace; two sons, Shelton "Rock" (Sallie) English Jr. of Fort Mill, and William "Billy" H. (Denise) English of Cheraw; a daughter, Shelly Ann Fields of Chicago, Ill.; Ken and Kay Broadwater of Wallace, friends of the family; nine grandchildren, Charlotte Hurst of Chesterfield, Brent English, Michael English and Morgan English of Cheraw, Gracyn English, Mary Reid English and Rob English of Fort Mill, and Tony Parmigiani of Chicago; and a great-grandson, Drew Hurst of Chesterfield.


He was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Annette Marsh.

Vera Area Wallace Hyatt, 73, of Cheraw, died Saturday, May 10, 2003.

Born in Chesterfield, Mrs. Hyatt was a daughter of the late Elijah C. and Millie M. Knight Wallace. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Cheraw.


Surviving are two sons, Dewayne Wallace of Wallace and Jimmy Wallace of Cheraw; three daughters, Mary Sue "Susie" Elizabeth H. Walker of Cheraw, Joann Hyatt Rogers of Wagener and E. June Hyatt Pate of Bennettsville; two brothers, Clifton H. Wallace of Cheraw and Elmer Ray Wallace of Chesterfield; two sisters, Virgie Wallace and Edell Bone of Cheraw; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Ruth Watts and Iceann Wallace.

Elizabeth Previtte Lang

Elizabeth Previtte Lang, 86, of Cheraw died Saturday, May 10, 2003. A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Monday,May 12 from Sandy Plains United Methodist Church Cemetery, Morven, N.C.

Born in Pageland, Mrs. Lang was a daughter of the late Samuel and Minnie Sikes Previtte. She was a retired merchant and attended Zoar United Methodist Church.


Surviving are one son, Gerald (Helen) Lang of Cheraw; one granddaughter, Sharon L. (Todd) Robinson of Cheraw; and one great-granddaughter, Chrislynne Robinson of Cheraw.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur J. Lang, and three brothers.

Shirley Williams Sikes

Shirley Williams Sikes, 67, of Mt. Croghan, died Monday, May 12, 2003. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 from Center Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


Born in Chesterfield County, Mrs. Sikes was a daughter of the late Mack and Annie Boone Williams. She was a homemaker.


Surviving are a son, Billy Sikes of Chesterfield; two daughters, Cathy Tarlton of Ruby and Rose Hodge of Patrick; a former son-in-law, Tommy Tarlton of Mt. Croghan; a sister, Catherine Joplin of Kannapolis, N.C.;10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Sikes, and a son, Jerry Sikes.

Loyd H. Allen

Loyd H. Allen, 81, of Ruby, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 15 from White Oak Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Ruby, Mr. Allen was a son of the late Robert Jackson and Sarah Frances Gulledge Allen. He was a retired textile employee and farmer and was a member of Ruby WOW Lodge 516.


Surviving are his wife, Madge Woodward Allen of the home; a daughter, Janice (Doug) Thompson of Cheraw; a grandson, Jack Thompson of Cheraw; and three brothers, Clyde Allen and W. K. Allen of Kannapolis, N.C., and Grady Allen of Ruby.


He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Allen and Arthur Allen; and four sisters, Bess Gulledge, Clara Hancock, Azalee Terry and Dorothy Hendrickson.
